Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?

UK

Wow, another bumper month, going to take some time to look through them all, but well done to the huge number of entrants who got something done!

And, as always, a massive thanks to Nevelon for keeping this whole thing running smoothly in my absence!

Went overboard and gave out 16 votes last month, so this month I decided to restrict myself to... 19? Wait, that's not right!

Superb work guys. I gave out tons of votes this month, mainly for the amazing paint jobs, but also for people hitting the brief particularly well and for those who are showing lots of improvement and/or showing new skills and trying new and interesting stuff. As Paradigm says, a bumper month indeed! Well done all.

And as always, thanks to Para and Nev for all the work they put in.

Once again, a lot of stellar work. I based my votes this month on theme more than anything else. And since everyone's entries are so nice, I can't help but comment on them all:

Nevelon: I like your choice of pale blue for the wraiths. The blending from blue to black could use a few more steps to smoothe out the effect-- something I struggle with as well.

Viterbi: The deep black shading on Hellboy is great-- very MIgnola-esque.

endtransmission: I like the contrast between the pale green body and fleshy tentacles, although a little more transition around the face would help the effect. Also, the tentacles look just like giant earthworms, which dleights me to no end.

Arakasi: I like all the little details you painted in-- the gems on the swords, the glowing eyes and fingertips. I agree in general with your decision to leave most of the model meaty and gross, but I wonder if it would be worth going back and picking out the skulls amid all the gore?

DrGiggles: The cool blues of the carapace contrasts nicely with the bright red of the scythes and spikes and such. The teeth could use a little highlighting, I think.

MobileSuitRandom: Painting Durhtu's leaves in several different colors was a nice touch to add some variety to what might have otherwise been a big block of brown.

maxwin: the reflected glow from the lava looks great. Did you go back and tone it down from your WIP photos?

Captain Brown: your red and green Goliaths are a nice callback to the old days of GW. The faces are also quite expressive.

Freya: Lovely blending on the blues and purples. Will you keep experimenting with oils?

Rybrook: I like the leopard-skin pattern on the chainsword and the angry eyes. Nice work on a classic character.

Jamie Shred: Outstanding work on a set of models that must have been difficult to work with. They'll really enhance the game experience.

queen_annes_revenge: I love how the weird face turned out-- it must have been a bear to paint.

Vejut: I love Ral Partha skeletons-- they look like they'd fit inside a heroic scale model. Adding the grave markers to the bases was a nice touch. Also, square bases FTW!

DV8: While the brushstrokes may be visible close up, at arm's length they give a nice, impressionistic effect. I wish I were brave enough to take my highlights so close to white.

Blackheart77: The blue-grey bodysuit is quite a departure from the black one normally sees on Imperial Assassins. The model's leaning forward on the built up base gives it a sense of movement as well.

Horla: Judge Death! That's a vinyl model, right? It looks like it stepped right out of a Brian Bolland illustration.

ms07b3: The little slashes of color here and there make your Dark Eldar more interesting to look at that the usual monochrome paintjobs one usually sees.

Yorkright: The different metallics were a nice choice.

Jadenim: The Deat Maidens are spooky and weird. I like the feathered headdress a lot.

Good Old Murray: It's the Wicked Witch of the West! She needs a flying monkey or two.

Midget Gems: Gobba Harlequins! The purple-and-yellow checks are spectacular. It must have taken you ages to do them.

Pariah Press: That gun toting werewolf is delightfully funky. It must be nearly as old as I am.

Ezki: Wow, that's a great piece of terrain. It's almost big enough to be a game board all by itself.

Evil-D185: The blending from black to purple is really smooth. I really need to up my game, I think.

Tek: An interesting blend of old and new bitz. Your deep shading and striking highlights do a lot to hide the difference in detailing on the various parts.

Don Qui Hotep: It's pretty rare to see a scale model like that on Dakka. I like the marble effect on the hull. Painting all those little lights/portholes must have been quite an exercise in patience.

Modock: I'm impressed by your clean blending on the your highlights. I wish I was that good.

Turaxa: Nice use of that very old Zombie kit. The skin tone on the model looks appropriately cadaverish.

Paradigm: Your rather rough highlights give the model a painterly effect that works well for such a scary model.

Salabasama: The orange on the pumpkins looks natural. The plume could use another highlight, I think.

JustALittleOrkish: The bright and dark greens give some nice variation without looking too gaudy.

Gitplitta: The fade from orange to brown is well executed. The little pumpkin is a nice touch-- did you add that or was it part of the kit?

Chris56: It's refreshing to see human skin tones on a Nurgle model. The guts are appropriately gross.

Deadshot: Nice banshee. Did you say that you did it all with Contrast paints?

feltmonkey: you seem to have conquered yellow. The scratches really make the model, to my mind.

maharg: Ooh, a blast from the past. Delightful work on some very old models.

CancelledApocalypse: The turquoise and bone combination works great on the model.

DDJazzyJeff: That's the most adorable version of Ghost Rider I've ever seen. Does he really glow in the dark?

straken619: I like the two different directions you went with these models. Both are appropriately creepy.

Nice work all around. I look forward to seeing what you all do in November!

Now showing Catachan Jungle Fighters and World War zombies!

Painting total as of 30th November 2025: 136 plus a Deva King statue

Painting total as of 12/31/2024: 107 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain and two walkers and a quad mech and five giants

Yeah, it’s a vinyl a model based on Bolland’s work (I think a specific panel from Judge Death Lives but my memory grows hazy). It was a bit of a pain to work with as the mould lines are really hard to deal with as some of the pieces (like the arms) aren’t a hard vinyl but a more rubbery feel. If you look at it in real life, the paint on the arms has taken on a shiny quality. I’m hoping that when I varnish it that it takes on a more uniform look.

Thank you mate! Almost but it was contrast and washes. The skirt was blue and green washes and old GW glazes (which are basically contrast), and the skin, hair, and red bodice were Contrast. The old "real" acrylics used were for the skull on the base, the base rim and a bit of edge drybrushing

Thanks for the feedback Josh. Yeah the teeth and exposed skull could use more highlighting. You can't tell in the pictures but I used three layers on the teeth that looked like a good highlight while the paint was drying. I'll try to add a little bright yellow into the paint I used to brighten it up and see if that helps.

It’s intentional, if a little poorly executed. The look I’m going for is like when you put a few drops of ink into a glass of water, and it kinda swirls and spreads, but not in a uniform fashion. I think the best execution I’ve managed is on Manfred's cloak but all the spooks get it. They are not in tune with this plane of existence, they are bleeding into it, and not smoothly.

Or that’s the thought.

Ah, I thought I recognized that model. I had the Dredd from the same series, but my skills back then weren't up to such a large model.

It turned out quite well. I've never tried just using inks/glazes/Contrast on a model. I'll have to give it a go.

Well, painted models really enhance the gameplay experience, even for board games.

I wish I had the other two models in the series - there was also a Judge Anderson. Halcyon (the company behind them) also did two models for the Dredd movie (Stallone, not the newer good movie) - Dredd and Mean Machine. The Mean Machine one was pretty cool, would have been a nice one to have.

I did a more in-depth twitter thread on the Death project for anyone interested:

Thanks JoshInJapan for the comment, it was quite fun to paint Hellboy with this dark shadows.

Lots of great entries and these were my 5 favorites painting- and modelwise (narrowing down was hard).

maxwin: I love the stark contrast between the nearly monochromatic demon and the red lava. But the OSL really makes this model.

Vejut: I love the color scheme, the blue robes stand out nicely. And the sculpts are really cool, they have a nice ambiguity (at least to my eyes) that you don't know if they are evil or just a group of undead adventurers out for a quest.

DV8: Had to vote for the blood effect alone (although the rest is equally amazing) That poor little pony did not have a good day.

Ezki: One hell of a terrain piece, as already said on your plog, those spiderwebs were a great late addition, so spooky.

Gitspitta: It's a sqig in a pumpkin, need I say more? Well, I really love the transition on the pumpkin and it was a good decision to paint the squi green instead of the more traditional red.

Thank you! I was recommended to try a makeup brush and I really liked the effect it had. I appreciate the praise but those windows were decals that came in the box - still trying, but not nearly as bad as it could have been!

Really great work from everyone! My top 3 in listed order:

Evil-D185 - The Cupboard Mimic

I really love the theme and story behind this. The blood effect is fantastic, and the scenic base and cupboard really sell the narrative!

Modock - Ariadna Dog Warrior

Really quite a clean piece, and very rich and vibrant colors as one comes to expect from your style! My only suggestion is that the muscles are all hyper-defined, almost like armor (think sculpted Greek and Roman muscle armor), and I think over-working each individual muscle fibre makes the entire thing look unnatural anatomically.

Chris56 - Rogue trader Nurgle-ness

YES! I love the colors on this piece, and while the photograph is over-exposed, you can still definitely see the vibrancy of the piece! I just think his teeth are a let down compared to how refined the rest of the model is.

Honorable Mentions

Maxwin - Be'lakor

I really love the lava OSL you have going on! Similar remark to Modock's piece though; the musculature (especially those abs and ribs) are painted like individual pieces of armor, rather than as one whole piece, which just feels "wrong" (even for a daemon).

queen_annes_revenge – Emperor’s Children

Another great piece from you, although I think there's a LOT of pink going on, and I think some tonal variation (especially in the flesh-cloth and skin tones) would help separate the elements a bit more, maybe incorporating some of the lovely blue/teal color from your base to help unify the piece a bit.

 JoshInJapan wrote:

Cheers! I actually don't mind showing the brush strokes, especially if they add information to a piece. I've long since moved away from always trying to achieve perfect blends; I know I can do them, so I don't bother wasting my time on them anymore. I think having them visible really adds a sketchier, almost classic painter feel to them that always feels more visceral (plus much faster to do!)

You should definitely try pushing the contrast between your lights and darks, especially to add focus or emphasis. That little bit of "oomph" where you push your limits can real add that extra pizazz to a piece.

Congrats to everyone for getting something done once again! Lots of great entries!

Thanks for the comments, the final result was matte varnished and taken with a different camera which combined seem to have desaturated it quite a bit :(

Thanks for the comment, I appreciate the critique and will try harder next time!

I voted for loads this time around, forget how many now here are a few mentions ...

Viterbi - love that Hellboy!
Arakasi - Awesome piece! looks like a good candidate for a Doom boss.
JoshInJapan - nice green glow effect
QAR - beautiful paintwork.
DV8 - Suitably horrifying!
Ezki - Wonderful scene, Bruce Campbell would shudder seeing that cabin
Evil-D185 - my favourite this month, straight out of a John Carpenter movie
Modock - amazing as usual, I can only dream of transitions that smooth.
Gitsplitta - very nicely done!
Chris56 - this is awesome!
Feltmonkey - super neat and highly detailed marine, great job!
DJJazzyJeff - Nice work creating this piece!

Looking forward to next month!

Thanks dv8. It's very annoying, my emperors children aren't as pink as they look in my finished photos, where they seem to turn a rich magenta, instead of the more purple tone they actually are. It's strange. I agree on getting some more tonal variation. I neglected him for a bit whilst I painted Eidolon so had to rush him in the last few days.

Lots of great, terrifying entries this month.

Nevelon - I like that effect you're trying to get on the cloaks of them fading into reality. I wonder if there's a way of achieving more of a swirly effect using inks or oils or something.

Viterbi - That Hellboy mini is cool. You've done a great job on him.

endtransmission - Another cool mini. The slimy effect on the tentacles is good. I'm generally not a fan of transparent bases, but I can see why they work for boardgame miniatures.

Arakasi - That looks a big, spectacular model! Nice work on the fleshy areas particularly.

DrGiggles - Great highlighting on the chitin. I think the teeth and tongue need a bit more, they tend to be a focal point on Tyranids.

MobileSuitRandom - I love the whole Syvaneth line. Such fantastic models. I like your autumnul colour scheme.

maxwin - Very atmospheric. The glow from the lava makes it.

JoshInJapan - The skeleton guy is slightly plain, but the green ghosts are great!

Captain Brown - Real classic oldhammer feel to both the minis and the paintjob. Very nice.

Freya - Awesome colours. It looks like a my little pony. Is it?

Rybrook - The leapard prints are cool, and the face is full of character. With the hair, I think you went a bit too white on too much of it, if you see what I mean. You could have had white highlights on the area where the light would reflect most, a small area near the tops of the pony tails. It's really difficult to make miniature hair look like hair.

Jamie Shred - Nice bold colours. Not the best photos to show them off, unfortunately - they're come out pretty over-exposed. The group shot is good, and you can see the painting there. My favorite is the guy with the antlers, with the markings all over him. On the individual photo of him, you can't see the markings, though.

queen_annes_revenge - Another nice Emperor's Children guy. I love the bases you're putting these on. I think you're suffering in the voting from Emperor's Children fatigue a bit!

Vejut - Really creepy, and very characterful.

DV8 - Super stuff! I'm also a fan of visible brushstrokes on a mini, even if that tends not to be how I paint. Not sure I can, to be honest! Did you say you were using Tamya clear red mixed with black for the blood? Try mixing in a touch of brown as well. That stuff, plus black and brown makes worryingly realistic blood, and you can vary the amounts of black and brown to make the blood look fresher or older.

Blackheart77 - A nicely-painted Assassin. The rear shot does make me think of Stupid Sexy Flanders in his ski-suit, though. Feels like he's wearing nothing at all. Nothing at all. Nothing at all.

Horla - One of my favorites, although I'm a Judge Dredd nerd and a Brian Bolland fan, so I was always going to like it. I like the way you've painted it though, in a economical, very comic-book style.

ms07b3 - Very nice. A really grim, gritty feel to these, and excellent work on Lelith's face.

Yorkright - Clean, solid work. The green glow on his gun is well done.

Jadenim - I like the head-dress with the feathers a lot. How does she see where she's going, though?

Good Old Murray - Haha, a really classic with with a cat and broomstick. Nice.

Midget Gems - I really like these. They're a great idea, and really well executed. We're used to seeing your converting and kitbashing skills, but the painting is great as well. You've got that bright, old-school Eavy Metal look going, and some really neat work on the yellow and purple checks.

Pariah Press - Do werewolves really need machine guns? He looks more like a were-dog, to be fair. Possibly a German Shepherd.

Ezki - Nice to see a bit of scenery in this challenge. That's a spooky little graveyard.

Evil-D185 - Very nice, really gross and gory, and lovely blends between the black/purple/bone colours.

Tek - Nice conversion and good colours. The blade is really well-painted.

Don Qui Hotep - Nice spaceship. Did you paint all the dots for the lights on by hand?

Modock - Another werewold with a gun. What has become of werewolves these days? I remember when they would tear you apart with their claws and teeth, not try to shoot you. I guess they got lazy. (Amazing painting as always, by the way.)

Turaxa - I like the narrative of this former guardsman who is now a zombie.

Paradigm - I like the textures, particularly the skin. I think overall the model needs more darker areas, to balance the lighter ones.

Salabasama - Cool little minis, very thematic. I really like the little pumpkin.

JustALittleOrkish - Really bright, strong colours.

Gitsplitta - A really fun little mini. The blending on the pumpkin squig is great, and I love the little pumpkin on the base.

Chris56 - Really great, vibrant stuff. The skin tone is great, and I love the little touches like the veins and the boils.

Deadshot - Nice and scary, good colours.

Maharg - Great horror architypes.

CancelledApocalypse - Really tidy painting, and a great smooth, pristine bone colour.

DJJazzyJeff - Ghost rider is pretty cool, and I like the mix of tones in the black areas. The flames don't really work - did you paint it over a black undercoat?

straken619 - Good quality stuff, I really like the wings.

Congrats to everyone who entered, and thanks to Nevelon and Paradigm for their hard work on the challenge. Thanks to everyone who voted for me, and JoshInJapan, Maxwin, Paradigm, CancelledApocalypse, Freya, and Pariah Press for the comments, both in this thread and the submissions thread. Freya, your comment really made me laugh.

See you next month!

Well, that should be 5 days of votes (and a little extra time ) so let’s have some spooktacular winners!

In 3rd, Modock with the Ariadna Dog Warrior. Werewolves, a classic Halloween staple, with a modern military twist.
Spoiler:

Some nights you hit up the cupboard for a midnight snack. Halloween? YOU are the snack. Evil-D185’s "The Cupboard Mimic" is a nice shot of horror.
Spoiler:

But that’s not the only bloody horror we saw this month. Taking first is DV8’s Mourngul. It’s big, it’s mean, and it’s coming for you next!
Spoiler:

Overall an amazing month from everyone! Always fun to see what spooks and horrors crawl out from the dark recesses of our paint benches in October. This year was no exception. Congrats to the winners, and for everyone who participated. It’s a great community, and a blast to paint with you all every month. Don’t forget that this month we turn to salvation from evil with Saints and Sinners. Or just give in to the dark side and revel in it. We don’t judge.

Keep on painting everyone!

MobileSuitRandom - I love the whole Syvaneth line. Such fantastic models. I like your autumnul colour scheme.

oh, yeah!! -
~2005: Me, when the wood elves were updated: These are AMAZING, I will get every single model from this line
the next ~15 years: *crickets chirping* while half of the old range goes the way of the dodo or is replaced with new, also amazing minis
2020: Me, after finally buying some newish plastic kits and old metals off eBay: WHOA these are AMAZING and so fun to paint, who would have thought

Sometimes I really wonder if old WHFB would be still around if people like me had actually *bought* some of this stuff

Horla - One of my favorites, although I'm a Judge Dredd nerd and a Brian Bolland fan, so I was always going to like it. I like the way you've painted it though, in a economical, very comic-book style.

Thanks! I ended up looking at about half a dozen different versions of Death from the comics, Bolland to get the idea of the highlights (given that his were all B&W images) and then a combination of Carlos Ezquerra and Peter Doherty (Young Death) for the rest. Definitely a different approach than painting 40K miniatures, even the large 40K stuff like tanks.

The mini is for gaming so I exaggerate / push the contrast as mush as possible so the mini is more visible on the table. I tend to paint display minis a bit different. Anyway I agree with your statement.

The enties that cought my eye.

Hi All

Congrats to the Winners

Modock - the Skin and colors are so vibrant, and the base is wonderfully detailed as well, really nice to look at
Evil-D185 - great idea, the whole scene as a really dark and dingy horror movie feel to it.
DV8 - Lovely contrast between the cold skin and warn base. did realize how big it was until I saw the horse.

and well done to everyone theres a whole host of scary and terrifying entries here which was fun to go through and vote for.

JoshInJapan and Feltmonkey thank you for my comments and for leaving comments for all the entries. Your effort really helps the community around
