Hello!

So, I have a small problem. I want to start putting together small forces of Dark Angels and Night Lords.

But!

Book 9 has basically been sold out since launch, because I guess they printed 12 of them, and I'm really not wanting to pay $200+ on eBay for what is already an overpriced book.

So without pirating, is it possible to get the rules I need for both of these legions?

One of them filthy casuals...

Check and see if you have any local 30K groups that may have the book, and ask very nicely if you can photograph the rules?

In the meantime, start building your army by grabbing some tactical marines(which you're always going to need) and maybe a character or two. You can go with the Pride of the Legion Rite of War which lets you take veterans and terminators as troops choices. In 30k, regular tactical squads are bolters only, but veterans can take up to 1 special weapon per 5 marines.

You're also going to need the Age of Darkness: Army List book because this will give you all the general rules for units in a legion army; things like the aforementioned tactical squads, terminators, Sicarans, etc etc along with a lot of the generic Rites of War. I do not see Forge World updating these "red books" before next year(especially at the somewhat glacial pace they've been doing Horus Heresy releases), so there shouldn't be any need to worry about the book being outdated right after purchase(looking at you, constant stream of 40k releases).

Battlescribe is a workable stopgap if you can't get ahold of all your rules; some people find the rulebooks easier to use and you will want to check with your opponent to make sure everything worked correctly (it doesn't always enforce restrictions like number of upgrade weapons per squad), but you can start building lists/playing with just Battlescribe if you need to.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.
