It’s called Mordian. I’m pretty sure it’s not changed.

See that stuff above? Completely true. All of it, every single word. Stands to reason.

Can confirm it is listed as "Mordian" in the original Imperial Guard Codex from 2nd edition.

It was actually called "Mordor", but the estate of J.R.R. Tolkien called and told GW it was trademarked. GW got slapped with a C&D so GW decided to name it "Mordian".

Always thought that Mordian was a weird name. Mordia sounds better to me.

GW is inconsistent as page 3 of the 3rd ed. Codex Imperial Guard names the planet as "Mordia." Does anyone have a more recent IG codex for comparison?

And I agree that Mordian as a proper noun sounds weird. At least in English, many proper nouns for places end in "a", i.e., Asia, North & South America, Africa, Australia, India; and to get the adjective you tack "n" onto the root. So having the proper noun end with "n" seems off.

Well, it reads as an adjective for English. The Mordian Iron Guard sound like they're from the <planet/nation/whatever> Mordia. Or possibly just Mord or Morda. Or even Mordy.

Canada- Canadian Army.
Germany- German Army.
Russia- Russian Army.

Not that the official, formal names are constructed like that, but whatever. Mordian Iron Guard doesn't sound like an official, formal designation either.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

What makes it weird is that noun and adjective are identical. There are several geographical names on Earth ending with "an" - Oman, Bhutan - but AFAIK the respective adjective is always declensed into something else.

I agree with Esmer: it is weird that the name of the planet and the adjective are identical. In my humble opinion GW should keep Mordian like the adjective and change the planet name in Mordia, or keep Mordian like planet name and change the adjective in something like Mordiansh/Mordianshes.

The answer is inside you; but it is wrong.

If the place is called Mordian the adjective should be Mordiani, Mordianese or Mordianian.

OK, I've just had a gander at the current IG 'dex - while they're careful on pages 27 and 31 not to name the system, it does show up on the star map on page 16, just above and to the left of the big number 5.

It is still listed as "Mordian"

I thought the planet was always Mordian. It does make sense grammatically. They are iron guards of Mordian.

The royal scots Lothian regiment are from Lothian, not Lothia.

Maybe they call themselves manmordian. Though the Adeptus Disnorious might complain.

It just occured to me that we have the exact same linguistic oddness with Catachan.

I started with 3E and it called the planet Mordia, along with the Mordian Iron Guard.

Then again, this was also before GW started adding relativistic values to their lore, such as 120mm Leman Russ Battle Cannons or 0.998" Heavy Bolter shells... 30 round Bolter magazines...

About the only real comparison is why the planet that the Cadians were from, was called Cadia, not Cadian...

I will not rest until the Tabletop Imperial Guard has been reduced to complete mediocrity. This is completely reflected in the lore.

This is the same thing that bother me about Catachan. To this day I think it sounds incorrect. At the same time, Catacha sounds weird asl though but Mordia doesnt

Not just the catchan or the mordian, though. The tallarn desert raiders of tallarn, the kreig of the Death korps of Kreig, they also use the planet name as the possessive noun.

Obviously, since no one in 40k speaks English, but do some variation of Gothic, it doesn't have to follow English norms, or even follow its own norms as their are dozens of dialects of low gothic that are only partially understandable to each other

To be a man in such times is to be one amongst untold billions. It is to live in the cruelest and most bloody regime imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been forgotten, never to be relearned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim dark future there is only war. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of carnage and slaughter, and the laughter of thirsting gods.

As I mentioned further up, county regiments in Britain are/were named after the region, not the people from the region (although after the reforms this isn't always the case). So the regiments in this case are named after the planet as opposed to the people living on the planet.

I think it's perfectly logical that their name is the same as a planet.
The only reason it doesn't sound quite right, is that a planet ending in -ian sounds strange. That sounds like a suffix that would be exclusively for a possessive, so it sounds weird as a planet name.

Where? I've just had a quick skim of the 3rd ed IG 'dex, and it only seems to refer to the Mordian Iron Guard, not the planet itself.

I'm currently re-reading the Eisenhorn novels, and noticed that in Malleus there is a passing reference to "Mordia":

Spoiler:

From Malleus, Chapter 12
Eisenhorn and Fischig are discussing Eisenhorn's journey from Eechan to Cadia:

"Long ride?"
"Best part of six months. We got as far as Mordia on a free trader called the Best of Eagles, and then came the rest of the way as guests of the Adeptus Mechanicus..."

It looks like GW is pretty inconsistent with the name of this particular place, considering the previous examples given from the IG codex books. For me, I think Mordia works better and seems more natural.
