How do!

Went on a Black Friday splurge, and bought loads and loads and loads of Squig units for a shiny new army. And this is my chronicle of actually getting them painted.

Being a lazy sort, and reluctant to paint, I am of course going down the Contrast route.

Built the first wave over the weekend, and got some of them through the spray booth. First dab of the brush started about 40 minutes ago, and that’s the first Squig Herd’s flesh done, using Blood Angels Red over Wraith Bone. And they look great, if I do say so myself.

First 10 Hopper Squigs are currently drying in the booth, as I forgot to do their undersides. Give it a bit, then a once over before deciding if they need more spray.

Next up? Building another 20 strong Squig Herd. Because Squigs are the best thing ever. There’s no evidence for that, but it’s a scientific fact!

Funny thing, is i tought about doing a mono squig force a few years before the gloomspite tomb was released, but never got around to it, tought of painting all thouse bouncyballs was not appealing.

I might rethink it in the future now that we have contrasts, they could make a good counter to my 1000p troggoth force, aka 1000p of trolls and 1000p of bouncyballs.
If you are planning some drybrushing or normal layering, post a clouse up of one that has only contrast please.

Well, contrast are seriously a wonder on Squigs!

Tidied back up with Wraith Bone, then Volupus Pink on the tongues, and Magos Purple for the gums.

Another quick tidy up with Wraithbone, and Skeleton Horde applied on the teeth, gums and just a little around the mouth. Really brought it all together.

Just need to do the Goblins stuck in the mouths, and basing.

All in all, pretty chuffed for around 3 hours work.

Contrast paints I think are a godsend for a force like this. I know they have made my venture into tyranids possible.

They certainly a miracle of our age.

If I can maintain this pace, I may even have the whole 2k+ collection done and dusted by Christmas. Which is nice.

Certainly gives me something to do during lockdown!

I can take a gaunt from start to finish in about one day, even a work day by putting down layers on my breaks. Multiple griblies depending how many spare painting handles I have on hand. And contrast paints scale well up. My trygon only took a couple days. It might be bigger, but I could use a bigger brush.

Winning Golden Demons? Nope. Looking good on the table? That they do.

(or will once I get them up to the point level where I can play them)

Considered basing, remembered I had a pot of Astrogranite knocking about.

Bish bash bosh! Squiggly Beasts done, barring the base rim, which I’ll do tomorrow once the texture is fully dry.

Think I might do the Gobbos the traditional way, as I’m not convinced by Black Templar.

Though I may experiment on spare odds and sods, and try out different Contrast grays. Quite like the idea of a more neutral ‘wafty’ gray compared to black.

Yea the Btemplar is odd i agree, first layer is just dead wrong, 2nd layer at least gives it a darker tone but somethings off.

Been using it on some hair for some human non armored 32mm models, it dont look "right" but i cant paint it the normal way, there is reasons i have never painted something that aint fully covered in metal before...........

There’s a blog part?

Not that I rarely frequent this section of the forum. Nope. Not a hint of gray in my home! Not models. And certainly not hair.

I found black Templar to be a pain.
Even keeping the same painting routines it just looks off to be.

For the basic night gobbos I just paint them black, drybrush a mid tone blue then wash with nuln to mute the blue a bit.

Quick and simple especially for painting big batches of them.

In contrast (heh), I have found Black Templar to be a pretty easy replacement for abaddon black, gives a good baseline for volumes on a model, although I don't use it as intended.

Squigs are looking great by the way!

The blog part found you it seems
Now remember, this needs to be regularly updated by peer pressure and we all know how devastating an effect that has

Ok all joking aside, it was a mere suggestion. Still i let you tackle the gloomspite gits first before i may or may not make a grotarium regiment or Grottarium Genestealer cult?

The Squigs are really nice kits.

Heads are all mix and match within their own kits, but the Hopper Squigs are larger, so no cross-kit swapping without some extra work.

But you definitely get a decent amount of variety, especially as the body poses are quite varied.

About to head to my local GW, get some more goodies, because I want those two coins!

Back to building. Got another 10 Squigs and a pair of Herders done, with the same to go.

Intend to get the Squigs through the booth tomorrow, as I make a start on the Squig Hopper with the Contrast paints.

Might undercoat some tonight, at least make a start (in a booth, takes a couple of attempt to get the undercarriage done)

Glad I'm not the only one that doesn't get Black Templar. It's been fine for smaller pieces like boots/belts or guns, but armour or clothing just doesn't seem to work.

Nice to see a squig horde coming together

I may yet play around with it, as Gobbos are nothing if not small. And to be honest, a sort of charcoal, washed-out black does suit the vicious little sods.

Just trying to think if I’ve got any spares kicking around from yesteryear. If not, definitely got a load of Gnoblars somewhere I can mess about with, and a can of Mechanicus Standard Grey.

Figure some experimenting will turn up just the right sort of drab, uncared for grey I’m envisaging.

Just need to get back to it, as it’s really quite a relaxing evening pastime with contrast.

I am not at all convinced by Black Templar either. I can thoroughly recommend two layers of Basilicanum Grey for a faded black though.

Though guards may sleep and ships may lay at anchor, our foes know full well that big guns never tire.

Great to see you in the P and M blogs MDG, your insights are always welcome in the News and Rumour section of the forum so glad to see you start your Gloomspite army.

Are you considering any different colours for your squigs? I think the likes of Nazdreg yellow, or even Flesh tearers red for a darker coloured squig would be great.

I concur on black Templar, in terms of areas of cloth or power armour it rarely works. Personally I use it over metallics for guns and traditional armour where it does a great job, but that is of little use for Goblins. All in all the contrast paints really reward experimentation, and usually a hefty mix with contrast medium for me, to find the best results. My personal favourite is Talassar blue, I get so much mileage out of it.

But good luck, some closeup pictures would be great.

Next up? Squig Hoppers. First one done as a tester, and I’m pretty happy with it.

I am tempted to mix up the colouration, but sticking with classic red for now. I’ve got another 25 Hoppers waiting in the wings, so that is subject to a change of mind. I’m certainly considering it to help with unit delineation. And I’ve a full set of Contrast to work with.

They’re really a thing of wonder. They flow so smoothly, I’m having little trouble “keeping with the lines”.

And yeah, the Skeleton Horde really helps tie everything together in the gob. The Magos Purple is quite a light colour, but a tiny bit of SH over the top just darkens it enough.

Lips all done. Time to let them dry, tidy up, then on to the gums and any spots I’ve missed.
