I'm looking for some cheaper craft acrylics that I can use on terrain without worrying about how much i am using - particularly for dry brushing on highlights and moss/fungus/rust/weathering on to a base coat Has anyone got any good recommendations that are available in the UK?
I did see these in the works: https://www.theworks.co.uk/p/acrylic-paint/complete-acrylic-starter-kit/5052089215658.html which has a good colour selection (apart from lack of grey) for a cheap price. Has anyone got any experience with these? Thanks!

I have the burnt umbre from the works, had it as a base layer on a small board I made, went on well but took a while to dry.
Havent tried to dry brush though.

In my experience almost any acrylic paint works great for terrain. Even the pound/dollar store stuff. There's no real fine detail to obscure so go wild and pick whatever's cheap, plentiful and available in your local area.

I don't know if they're available in the UK, but in the US I've found Delta Ceramcoat paints to be the class of the craft paint category.
There are definitely tiers of craft paint. The $0.49 stuff here is pretty terrible.

also look at standard home emulsion paint (the stuff for bathrooms & kitchens is best as it dries waterproof). the bonus is that you can get any colour mixed.

Also I've started taking photos to use as reference for weathering which can be found here. Please send me your photos so they can be found all in one place!! |

Thanks for the replies, given the price I'll just go for these and see how they do, and pick up a cheap grey separately. . Even if they aren't great I think there is a limit to how much they can mess up a dry brush

If you can get a range of gray, and a range of brown (especially saturation), that might be useful.

I wouldn't start with those little bottles if you're doing terrain... it goes super fast, even if you thin it. In the US I buy 9 oz. tubes. I'd say start with black, gray, burnt umber, raw umber, and unbleached titanium. Add a tube of heavy body white for brightening each of those tones. Add burnt sienna for rust and some green to mix with gray for moss or lichen... the little bottles might work there. I use cheap 2" brushes as well as a 4" roller for big stuff. I mix all sorts of strange conconctions... thin it with water, mix it with PVA glue or sand, whatever the situation calls for. As other have said, the cheap stuff works fine... check my P&M blog for multiple examples.
