Hi all. New back to 40k myself and managed to get a friend who is interested the new Space Wolves Combat patrol box.
I am unfamiliar with SW's....I have Battlescribe and wanted a hand in understanding whats in the box in terms of points value.
1- Intecessors, straight forward
2- 5 Reivers easy enough, although dunno what...can see theres a box for them so can work that out.
3 The Warsuit Ok sorted
4- The LT in the box. I cant find him on BS SW listings? I can see a combat leader? What is the LT/leader from the box?
Lastly, any advice on the next unit to get?
Thanks

Space Wolves have different names for some of their stuff, like the primaris lt., even though they're functionally the same thing (besides the occasional bonus weapon option). So the HQ is called a Battle Leader, but is the same model as a lieutenant.
As for what to get next, that would depend on what your friend likes to use. Intercessors are never going to be a bad choice (assault ones if he really wants to mix it up in melee, though normal ones are a perfectly good base to work with), but playing a few games to see what sorts of models they gravitate towards wouldn't hurt. That or a codex for the fluff and easier to read rules.
Maybe Ragnar if they're looking for another HQ option or want a hero character to mulch stuff in melee?

If he is starting out then the next thing to get is a loan to pay for this expensive hobby
Assault Intercessors would be my go-to on this as they are very Wolfy. Look to get the Recruit starter kit and sell the Necrons half on eBay and most of your money would have been recouped. Also gives you a shield lieutenant you can add wolfy bits too to use as a captain if you wish.
Other than that it depends a lot of budget and planned play style.

The Rievers are a special unit for SW. The Hounds of Morkai. They have anti-psyker rules. You can make them as regular Rievers if you'd prefer. After that it really depends on what your friend likes the look of. SW Thunderwolf Cavalry is really good as are dreadnoughts. Above all I'd ask what your friend likes the look of and go from there.

A redemptor dread would be a great option, pretty point efficient with a good mix of offence and defense.
I use invictor warsuits in my lists and they are great.

Space Wolves always presented a weird aesthetic dichotomy to me; there's the sort of low-key space-vikings idea where you're playing what's essentially a Space Marine Chapter wearing fur pelts, but then you occasionally get something over-the-top wacky like Thunderwolves/Wulfen.
I'd suggest getting a sense of whether your friend wants to stick to all-Primaris or wants to go for more of a hybrid approach. There aren't a lot of real dud choices in any SM Chapter right now, though you might want to be wary of vehicles since the damage inflation of 9th is giving them a pretty hard time and likely to continue doing so as more Codexes come out.

Most lists that SW run are running TWC mounted characters and TWC itself, and I don't think I have seen anyone use actual reaver models as reavers, or even the special SW ones.
IMO a better patrol box then the SW one, to start SW would the the DW or BA one, both would be easier to expend in to being SW too, Because neither box have wasted models which SW players wouldn't use.
A patrol box could easily be build up with either the old start collecting boxs, out of which both are valid and good options. With the non primaris one giving the TWC and more SW parts, then the start collecting SW.
As a starter probably having something like a core of 10-15 intercessors and some TWC to build a SW army one would be a good start.
SW dreads are also very fun to use. Dreads are good units in general, but SW have actualy good melee dreads with ax and shield.

If you have to kill, then kill in the best manner. If you slaughter, then slaughter in the best manner. Let one of you sharpen his knife so his animal feels no pain. |

There are a lot of great directions to go. To round out his troops options to get up to a battalion, id recommend assault intercessors or blood claws (they have about the same output), with the blood claws getting a few more weapon options now (and they're BS3+ and no longer 4+ IIRC).
For HQ, a rune priest/primaris librarian/Njal Stormcaller would be a really good idea. SW psy powers are pretty decent this time around, and Instincts awoken can make a big difference early on.
He will want something that can handle armour, and Bjorn with a twin lascannon can do that job well, and makes a great HQ option if he is wanting a third.
Also, a second invictor warsuit is a good idea too. I tend to run them in pairs, instead of one alone, and they seem to work a bit better for me that way.
Lastly, and maybe most importantly, Thunderwolf Cavalry is an incredible unit for the wolves, and they are, in my opinion, a must-have for the army. Not only are they really point efficient, but they are one of those really iconic space wolf units that really help sell the space wolf narrative. Wulfen, despite everyone decrying their adjustments, are still fine (though not broken like they used to be, and also are another one of those iconic space wolf units)
