How do?

So my awesome girlfriend got me the Void Dragon for Christmas, so I need to do a bang up job on him, naturally.\

I’ve found a couple of interesting tutorials. One uses airbrush layering to achieve the effect, others just rely on shift formulated paints.

I’ve got an airbrush, but haven’t really used it before. So I come cap in hand to pick your brains for tips, advice and guidance.

I know there are a few specially formulated ranges, and at least one is very.....arsey. I think I remember who it is, but don’t want to say in case I bad mouth the wrong range. Suffice to say I’m not terribly keen on rewarding their bad behaviour with purchases.

I’m otherwise really starting on the ground floor here, so any range and technique tips are very welcome!

Yeah there's a decent range on GreenStuffWorld. I've got one I use for my dark eldar aethersails. The gloss black primer helps, and you need to do lots of very thin layers.

I’ve not managed to use it successfully with a brush, it’s easier to use an airbrush but I have seen people get good results with a brush. I’ve never been good at lots of thin layers that’s why I got an airbrush ha

I know Vallejo and TurboDork both also make them. TurboDork's is the only one I've actually used, seemed to go on OK. Hairy brushing on a small orb and a flat blade, so not much color shift, but that's probably mostly the shape.

Colour shift paints work better on large areas, in my experience, and better still if the surface is curved slightly.

I have seen people use them on swords and stuff but I think the deal is that if the area is so small that the whole area is receiving the same light then you won’t see any shift.

Also worth knowing that you can apply I’ve colours other than black for different effects and you can blend them with an airbrush for interesting effects
