While I'm excited about the upcoming Old World release, something is nagging at me. There is undoubtedly going to be a Chaos faction, and I was thinking of running models like Blood Warriors and Bloodreavers as Chaos troops, and Varanguard Knights as, well, Chaos knights. I know that WHFB is a rank and file game, hence the square bases, but the models that I mentioned above have round bases. I was curious if, according to the old rules, there is any room for armies to have a majority of models with round bases.

There is not as the square footprint is important for determining flanks rear and the units los.

Having said that you might be able to make something work with having your round based models on square movement trays but not sure how that will line up for allocating attacks in melee etc.

Varanguard are rather large for Knights (who themselves barely rank up as is) They make convincing Skullcrushers though:

I am only a soloist or intra-family - so take it for what it is worth, but much of the time we end up just "doing the math" for bases.
Like my game yesterday of a unit of 10 cav (2 ranks of 5) attacking a hoard of infantry - not based for WFB.
so 5x25 = 125mm.
6x20 = 120mm, plus one on each side so 8 infantry can fight.

And by the way, I hate math.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

A fair way of handling things. However base sizes effect other matters.
Spell aura ranges are effected by outsized bases as is artillery.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It's easy enough to put the models on square bases, lots of after market sellers for them. Blood Warriors = Chaos Warriors with mark of Khorne, Bloodreavers = marauders. If you don't want to buy square bases there are people who make movement trays for round bases. Litko makes many if various sizes. I saw a Fantasy battle report on Miniwargaming where they used a whole Daemon army on round bases using these movement trays.

Important thing to note, we have no idea how the bases will work with The Old World. We don't know if the scale will be the same, if the bases will work the same. For all we know it could change to a footprint system like Kings of War. I think the footprint could work better, because then yuour are free to use minis of various basing types, as long as they all fit in the same block size.

I have a High Elf project and a Dwarf project waiting in the wings, and I'm waiting on more info before I start doing basing. I'd rather not have to rip them off their bases.

This! Plus it's still years out. With the world the way it is anything could happen, GW could decide tomorrow the market isn't there and cancel the whole thing. Believe it when you see it. There is little sense in building for an unknown game that may or may not come out in 2-3 years. Better to play any version of Fantasy, KoW, AoS or 9th Age until there is something definite. Square bases kind of cover all that. People do forget you can play AoS with square bases, it doesn't effect all that much.
