Ghastly Grave Guard

Hey all, I'm looking for some advice with starting a Gloomspite Gitz army. I've found all my old Night Goblins from the Battle for Skull Pass which I believe are the right ones. Unfortunately I don't have the Troll or Spider Riders from the set, but I do have about 100 spearGobs and 50 or 60 bowGobs with two Shamans and 2 Bosses (I guess "Loonboss" now?)
So I have a couple heroes and a solid battle line. What's next? Troggoths? Squig Hoppers? Spider Riders? Squig Handlers?

What's next depends upon what you like the looks of either model or stat wise.

At this point it’s honestly all down to preference.
With that many Gitz I’d suggest a Loonshrine as it’s free on points and will help a lot.
Fanatics - regular ones would help give some high damage and keeps a good threat range on basic Gitz.
Spore-splattas would help shield your units and keep them going for longer.
Squigs:
Herd - nothing overly impressive but it’s cheap numbers with fairly ok damage.
Hoppers - higher damage but their movement is extremely random.
Bounders - slower than hoppers but with a much higher damage output, definitely worth taking.
Mangler - high damage and threat, it will draw a lot of fire from the very start of the battle. It’s damage makes it more than worthwhile though.
Squig spitter - some decent ranged that Gitz sorely need. I always take one for thinning units.
Colossal - highly random movement but with solid damage, again, a mainstay in my list.
Spiders - easier to sum up, they can be used to spam mortal wounds depending on how much you invest in them and their hero’s.
Troggoth - they hit hard but still act as a solid anvil unit.
All of them can soak up a lot of damage while throwing out plenty in return.
If you run them with a mangler/colossal they will likely reach the enemy without much damage.
Dankholds for me kind of fall into the middle as nothing truly amazing.
The troggboss I’d recommend purely for a trogg herd or in a trogg army.
The troggoth hag is kind of a wildcard here.
Decent damage and it’s a mage, which helps out a lot.
Very heavy on points though for what it does.
Mega gargants - being destruction you actually get the choice of all 3.
They are severe damage sponges with high damage output.
Your opponent has to focus them down quickly as they have a high movement and can walk over regular models and low terrain.

Ok, thanks. Mostly, I wanted to make sure these basic troops weren't useless. Not often I can dig so many points worth of stuff out of an old box!

No, definitely not useless. And they serve as the transport/delivery system for the Fanatics. They do have an abysmal bravery score though. So when they start taking battleshock tests you'll lose additional models. Wich is why you field large blocks of them & they aren't expensive pts wise.....
Another thing to consider are the Gloomspite specific Endless Spells. I've had great fun with these.
My thoughts on bringing an allied Mega-Gargant. Fun, effective, it will certainly draw the fire, but terribly expen$ive. And eats up just shy of 500 pts. Also doesn't benefit from various Warscroll battalion or Bad Moon effects.
2 (sometimes 3) Mangler Squigs though.... Insanely dangerous & keeps things on theme if doing squigs.

I would atleast put in a rockgut unit on your way to 1k points, they are a good elite selection for a horde fokused gitz force(i am assuming you are going the horde route) and some squig hoppers for some fast movers to grab objectives.
You could ofc allso do the spider riders, but everything with 8 legs are direct order only, so, sad that you dont have them.
But yea, deffo get the loonshrine as Jack says, it gives some extra stuff for the little green horde if i remember correctly.

With updatea rules(not subfaction specific) it's woth anyway with suitable/units combo. Have couple big bouncer unit? Suitable general and you can bring in squigs!
Furthermore if you also have gits you can decide during deployment which units you want to bring back during game...

I've ordered some Fanatics and Squig Hoppers. Again, getting models I like before investing in the book. That way I won't mind if I just decide to paint 'em and shelve 'em.
For the heroes that came with BFSP though, would they still count as heroes currently? Could I reasonably use them as Loonboss and a Shaman?

Yea, as long as you make it clear to your opponent what warscroll unit the models represent there is no issues.
Just remember to swap out all the square bases to round bases, as i imagines the box is so old that it was pre AoS??
I dont know if round bases are "mandatory" now since i dropped out of the rules race in 18, but if they are not, eventualy they will be. (or buy some round base inserts from various crafting sites)

Yes. Automatically Appended Next Post: FrozenDwarf wrote:

Concerning round vs square bases & re-basing:
Check with those you'll actually be playing with 1st before doing this. It might be important. Or, like in my circle & at my two local shops, no one cares.

Dunno if anyone in your community will care about the bases, but on the tabletop it does matter. 20mm squares are more advantageous as models can be packed into a smaller spice to both make it more difficult for the enemy to get melee attacks in range and easier for you. This can be compensated for with appropriate spacing, but IMO way too much of a pain. Even if I was dual-using an army for a square-based game I would simply magnetize them to 25mm rounds for AoS.

Yeah, I've been swapping out bases as I go. Spent nearly as much on new bases as on new models! Lol

Ouch. I take you're not using Reaper bases?
