Thinking about starting Kharadron Overlords army,
Have some questions and hoping someone can steer me in the right direction.

1: Can they do any kind of Close Combat units? Or just pure shooting?

2: Can the models have head swaps with Fyreslayers. I love the airships etc but I hate that they all have metal helmets even covering their beards. Does the model allow for easy headswaps with any other Dwarven kits even non GW?

3: Is allying them with Fyreslayers viable in semi competitive scene?

Thanks

I'll answer as best I can to give you something until someone more knowledgeable on the faction comes along!

1.
They have some melee, a couple of different units that focus on it. Not really viable for an army wide focus, thats not what this faction is about. But its not like Tau in 40k, you aren't just missing out on a whole phase.

2.
I dont really know, but I imagine there would be some issues with the beards getting in the way. Likely depends on the specific units.

3.
Define semi competitive..? Generally speaking, army power in Sigmar comes from synergies from your allegiance abilities and sticking abilities from characters and such. As such, popping 400pts from a random faction into your army is almost always less powerful than making a pure list, because that 400pts of allies is not benefitting from any allegiance abilities and arent able to stack up synergies of their own much within that.

There are some notable exceptions, but I'm not sure if any apply here. Thats not to say if you take allies that we make your list bad, just that you likely would be sacrificing some strength to do it.

Stux covered 1 perfectly, nothing to add.

2 - It would not be easy but it would be possible. You would definitely be doing some shaving via hobby knife.

3 - Yes, actually. What Stux said is true, but there is an instance with KO-Fyreslayers which hits on one of those exceptions. Hearthguard Berzerkers. They are rather overpowered and also work just fine without any allegiance abilities--but they absolutely need a Fyreslayers hero nearby. A unit of 10 plus a hero can fit within the normal allotment of ally points for a 2k game. However, there is a way to push it further...

One of the sub-factions you can take, Barak Thryng, allows one in four units to be non-KO duardin as part of the army proper instead of being allies (so for every three KO units you can have one Fyreslayer unit). This allows you to take a 400-point blob of hearthguard berzerkers to take advantage of their max size discount and have a support hero, without it taking any ally points. Better yet, that support hero can be a Runesmiter, allowing said unit to deep strike.

So Fyreslayers heads may fit, but the beards obviously may flow into the armor and need to be corrected.

Do the necks operate similarly?

Competitively I just mean am I able to still battle my friends and compete with allies. Its sounding like I can

The main reason for the allies would be to have more close combat units, backed up by shooting instead of just shooting alone.

They don't have necks.

And yeah, hearthguard berzerkers are a badass melee unit. Also very tanky.

They don't have necks?

Is it like a space marine model where the head is inserted into the hole where the neck would be? Or?

There's a circular concave area on the body and the round head sits in it.

Also be aware that as allies you aren't going to be putting Fyrslayers in your ships. They lack the proper Keyword to allow that.
I don't recall if Barak Thryng changes that.

It doesn't, thus the common +runesmiter option since the Hzerkers need a hero to back them up anyway.

Yeah or a battlesmith if you're facing a fast army that'll get the first charge anyway, makes them very tanky.

What if did the opposite,
Could a Fyreslayers army with Kharadron as allies work out?
Like Fyreslayers backed up with 2 Gunhaulers or something like that?

I am not sure if Gunhaulers can carry thunderers or not though.

Assuming you are going for regular-level play allying in Gunhaulers would be viable and IMO pretty fun.

I'm going for regular play and would want it to be tournament legal. I want competitive wise to be able to function tactically but im not trying to stomp on people I just want to have fun.

I love dwarves and didn't play them much in Warhammer Fantasy since they were too slow and I dont like genuine armies.

I do like combined arms type armies and so strong infantry backed with fast shooting seems like it would be solid.

Gunhaulers do seem to be one of the more common allies i see for what it is worth.

Mobile gun platform isn't totally pointless in itself. Gives ability to provide ranged support and forces enemy to play safe on backfield objectives. It's much easier to怀play when opponent can't simply fly/teleport to rear objectives.

I think with the 400 points I could do 2 Gunhaulers and 3 Endrinriggers or a Frigate with Thunderers.

I am thinking it would be a neat way to have a close combat army still but add some nice speed and shooting to it.

Gunhaulers don't carry anyone.

So I would have to do a frigate if I wanted carrying, but gunhaulers would be easier points wise and I think Endrinriggers can still fly along for the ride with them

If you do Barak Thryng one in four units can be Fyreslayers/Disposessed without costing allied points AND you can still ally in 400 points of them on top of that. Something to consider.

The issue with that is I feel like I would rather have the army wide special rules of the Fyreslayers than not have them.

Funny thing is the actual allegiance--Ur-Gold Runes, prayers, traits, and terrain--is like half the benefit from Fyreslayer allegiance; their allegiance abilities are among the weakest in the game. But then their sub-factions, even the weakest is fantastic and the two stronger ones are cray good. Among if not the best sub-faction selection in the game. They mostly cancel each other out to a nice average.

Yeah and I think since I like close combat more than shooting it would be a bad idea to have the faction and sub faction rules for the shooting half of the army.
