Subject: Ork Footslog Gradual Army Buildout

I'm curious what other ork players would consider the necessary elements of a footsloggin' ork army at various points levels. For example, if you didn't have much money and had to buy models gradually, or were a slow painter and wanted to field only painted miniatures, what units would you start with, and what units would you add over time? Note that I'm not looking for specific army lists, but rather, something like, "at 500 points, you should be fielding at least two 30-strong units of boys for reason x, then at 1,000 points, consider adding a squad of lootas or a deffdredd to counter..." or whatever. Also, by footslog, I mean an army that is primarily made up of orks themselves rather than vehicles. I'm not opposed to a couple of trukks or walkers, but vehicles shouldn't be the focus of the army. Thanks!
1/29/21 - edited, this used to say greentide, but I forgot that this refers to a very specific type of list building, so I've changed it to say footslog instead.

I'll try, Goffs greentides.
- 500 points: it's impossible to field two large mobs and a cheap home objective holder is much needed, a bit firepower too. Mob up the boyz into a single 40 man blob. Big mek at 500 points is killy enough and makes the boyz quite stronger. Single kopta or min squad of kommandos can take the Mek Gun place.
Big Mek in Megarmour (kustom shoota, da killa klaw, da kleverest mek, follow me ladz)
30 Boyz (killsaw)
10 Boyz (killsaw)
Smasha Gun
1000 points: there's enough room for 90 boyz here, but you can also work on lists with 60 boyz and other stuff. For lists based on 90 man squads I'd take a Warboss and a Weirdboy (Da Jump + other power) and a couple of cheap units like Smasha Gunz, koptas, kommandos. Alternatively you could ditch 30 boyz and the weirdboy replacing them with a big mek with KFF, a tellyporting unit of meganobz and/or other cheap stuff to score objectives. Examples:
List 1:
Warboss (kustom shoota, killa klaw, da biggest boss)
Weirdboy (waprhead)
3x30 Boyz (killsaw)
2 Smasha Gunz
List 2:
Warboss (kustom shoota, killa klaw, da biggest boss)
Big Mek with KFF
2x30 Boyz (killsaw)
5 Meganobz
3 Smasha Gunz
For larger games just add multiple of those units. Ghazghkull when you hit 2000 points. Painboy is also handy, especially if there's Ghaz in the list.
For full greentides the models I'd suggest to have are: Ghazghkull, warboss, Big mek in megarmor with KFF, big mek with KFF, weirdboy, painboy, 90 boyz, 10-15 tankbustas, 5-6 meganobz, 2x5 kommandos, a couple of deffkoptas, up to 6 Smasha gunz. Eventually Makari, 30 additional boyz, up to 15 stormboyz (in multiple min squads of 5 dudes) and 10-20 gretchins.
I've seen lists with a couple of trukks to carry 3-5 man squads of meganobz but I prefer Tellyporta stratagem or Da Jump to deliver them. The only vehicles I'd bring in full greentides are 35ppm Deffkoptas or 40ppm Smasha Gunz. Regular warboss can be replaced by FW biker boss if you have the model.

I would buy some warhammer fantasy orks. Much cheaper. Mix them with regular Ork parts. 2 to 1 ratio of fantasy and 40K.
For painting go full light green contrast paint. Contrast wooden parts with wood contrast paint aftereards., it is dark enough to cover. Paint other 40k stuff black. Paint some blue tattoos on top of Ork green to lend some flare. Brown for leather.
Kitbash a shaman or psyker. Hav him cast da jump.
Bingo bango.

I think Blackie’s response is more in line with what I was after, namely what units are “must haves” for a greentide army at increasing points levels?
Anyone else have an opinion?
No mention of walkers or lootas though, are these just sub par units generally, or not suited for Goff greentide?

Lootas are very subpar, to the point that they are among the worst units in the codex. 20ppm (and an expensive platform to shield them, like 20+ gretchins) is what it kills them. Tankbustas work better.
Walkers are decent but they need armour redundancy to work, 2-3 light vehicles like dreads won't last a single turn if they are the only target for the enemy anti tank. In a list with tons of vehicles they are a legit option but I wouldn't recommend them for a green tide though, Meganobz outperform dreads by a significant margin.
If you really want to try them, Tellyport a squadron of 2 or 3 fully equipped with CC weapons and enhanced with a kustom job (+2''M or -1 to hit).
Warhammer fantasy orks are long OOP anyway.
