After a few years break I felt like painting miniatures again, and gaming ofcourse. The Carcharodons Astra have been an interesting Chapter to me for years. Having consumed all books about them I was pretty up to date on the lore and decided they will be my army. The main inspiration for how they look in the universe (in my mind) came from the cover art of the book, Red Tithe. I wanted to give my bunch their own lore and background. Lore panels in IG format can be read here.

I finished the first miniature, the humble Adeptus Astartes Intercessor. This also functioned as a starting point for my theme. The robes are sculpted from milliput and greenstuff. The head and shoulders are from Liber Daemonica. I went for a grim dark look, and wanted the armour to look like ceramite, and not steel or something similiar. I weathered the armour to be consistent with the tone of the base, adding some brown and reddish hue to it. The base is made from cork slabs, diamond textured plasticard, chain and some random MDF ruin I ripped to pieces. I also used some Vallejo Pigment and your basic wall filler to create the base texturing. And of course, since it's Carcharodons Astra, there needs to be blood. Hope you like it, more to come. Next up is the full squad to accompany this Carcharodon into battle.

Nice and gritty! The helmet in particular looks really good. I look forward to seeing the full squad!

Thanks fellas. I agree about the helmet, Liber Daemonica makes some great unique bits. I first thought about doing the traditional Carcharodons freehand patterns on different parts of the armour, but rarely have I seen ones that wouldn't seem out of place or too large. LB parts have them tiny and sharp from the get go.

Good job. I understand - without spilling. Especially noticeable on the right bracer-the recesses are not shaded. An interesting main shade... I like them)

I tried out some "tatoo" work on the McFarlane figures. ( pics in my gallery), It was difficult, I couldn't imagine trying it on table sized figures.
I love the gritty look you have going on, looking forward to seeing more.
