Not good, hopefully the tugboats can get it out. A lot stuff goes through suez daily. You can see in the pic it's taking up almost the entire canal.

This is going to be a very serious issue, not too much now, but in about two weeks time when the backlog hits port schedules.

That, and it is delaying other traffic; including Oil Tankers. This will cause further Oil price hikes.

Every time I see a picture of one of these cargo ships, it always amazes me just how much stuff they can stack onto them.

20,000 containers and probably a crew of 20. Amazing ships.

Anyway it's a cool visual but I'd be it'll be cleared in a day or two. Suck to be one of the delayed ships but not even a blip on the world economy.

We caught a bit of the sand storm that hit the ship, apparently part of the problem was the containers on the deck acted as a sail.

Oh and of possible relevance...

I wonder what is preventing them from using one of the ships behind it to tow it backwards.

They're relying on the tide which apparently after thursday won't be at it height again for something like 12-14 days, they'll seemingly have to dig it out while the water is high, I think the problem is even with a bunch of tugs they can only push it two directions but it doesn't seem to unwedge it. It's a bit like taking a nail, hammering it once with just enough force to wedge it in the wood then trying to remove it by pushing with just your finger left or right, you can use a lot of force but it's not the kind you need.

There was some indication strong winds were a factor but it also apparently lost power so it may have been the combination of both that got it wedged in side of the canal.

Yeah, but you'd still think they could attach to its stern and pull it out the way it went in so to speak.

One would think that, but there are a few elements that might make that idea impractical at this point in time. For example the way the ship is lodged in the canal, its physical size, the sheer weight pressing down, and the current tides being apparently too low right now. There are also issues like the amount of force needed to dislodge it under current circumstances, how you transfer that amount of force between the ships effectively, and what effects the chosen method might have on the structural integrity of the ship.

I do hope GW doesn't have any printed works stuck behind that ship.

On the other hand, the more they are inconvenienced by international shipping the more likely they are to have production locally right? A bad thing can lead to good things and all that.

Wonder if anyone has thought to use the same trick Oregonians used on that whale back in the 70s???

In all seriousness though, yeah, everything I'm seeing about this is bad news for literally every tiny sub category of "commerce". I would bet that at some point companies will need to make the tough call to send their ships the long way around Africa.

They'll probably also need some firefighting tugs to pump water into the ground under where the ship is stuck to help break the suction. Otherwise, they run the risk of breaking its back.

I would guess fear of bending or breaking the ship and creating a wreck. Ships aren't meant to take torque from the size at least not as much as it would take to pull that loose, it might snap.

The other issue would be that container ships are not tug boats. Their engines and setup isn't likely best suited to the roll. They might well have a lot of power, but at the same time they are heavy with cargo which eats up that power and they are slow to start and stop which means if things do go wrong they can't just stop and with ships that size you can't just cut the lines between them.

Chances are the lag of tug boats on site likely just means that there aren't any nearby normally and its taking time to source and move them into place. Same as the diggers and other items; its just not a common enough event that all the required equipment is nearby to get to work fast.

Does the Suez Canal have the same system of locks as the Panama Canal? Apparently they cannot simply flood the lock to get more water in, like the PC, as the ground appears to be right at the water level so have to wait for a higher tide like Crablezworth says. But, it still does not look like they can get much more water into the location to help.

Yep, get about twenty tugs all chained up and get a running start... And get the he** out of the way!
