So with the new Soulblight Gravelords coming out I'm in a conundrum. I was debating on starting either Ossiarch Bonereapers or Soulblight Gravelords as a second force. I have the battle tome for OBR. I play FEC so there is a little cross over and I have the Crumson Court. The lore for both is cool. The models for both are cool(barring a few relics). So the only question is which has the better rules?

Well we know Bonereapers are good. Nerfed from their peak, but they do well enough still.

Gravelords look decent, but honestly it'll be a while until we have a full read on where they sit on the meta. They surely won't won't as strong as initial Bonereapers, but might come close to their current level.

With 3e on the horizon too though, it would be a fools game to guess which will be the stronger competitive army in my opinion. Just go with your gut!

Actually, worth also noting that Gravelords have some cross over in units with FEC that might be useful to you. Specifically Zombie Dragons and Terrorgheists. If you run those in FEC, it will not take many purchases to have a field fieldable Gravelords army.

The only downside I would say for Ossiarchs right now is that chances are Vampires will quickly have more individual models than them and more variety of choice in how to build their forces and such.

Vamps are newly updated, but have a long legacy so they have quite a nice diversity within them and it seems that a fair few characters from Cursed City will also join their ranks (one assumes this means they go on individual sale at some stage outside of the CC boxed set).

Ossiarchs work great as they are and do have several builds and being tough to kill and dealing out good damage they are easier to build forces with. They are also perhaps one of GW's best value for money armies in general in terms of how many points you get to put on the table. So you can likely build them cheaper than vampires.

It's really down to your own choice what you go with. Both are solid options and have great fun models. I do think that Ossiarchs would really benefit from a second wave of models and I'd openly welcome a few point reductions if they did so you could fit more options into a single force.

Unfortunately(mostly because of the 700+ points it costs), you have to take the Cursed City stuff as a group like the Underworlds warbands, so if we see a release, it would probably be as a larger box containing all the enemies rather than individual models.

It's tough to say. We're really close to AoS 3.0 and it's very likely that we're going to see a lot of big changes. One of the changes that's been talked about is other factions getting points that are very similar to the Discipline Points that OBR use, which could mean that OBR suddenly get a nerf in that regard, or a buff in that regard, but we wont know till we see the wording of the rules and how it works with previous battletomes.

You could say that Soulblight is written in preparation for AoS 3.0, but there are also mistakes that need an FAQ before we really know if that's the case. As it stands, many Soulblight things got buffs or reworks in a few ways.

If your ideal is to play 'bones bones and more bones' then definitely go with the OBR. It'll be a much more thematic 'skeleton' force.

If you're more attracted to 'generic undead', then Soulblight is the way to go, since you can combine your skeletons with zombies, vampires, and other monsters to make a really cool force, and even ally in some Nighthaunt or FEC to get all the spooky options you want.

(Soulblight and Ossiarch Bonereapers cannot ally unless you take the Grand Alliance Death)

I guess my main concern is getting into an army that is a one trick pony or very limited. OBR can use Mortek Guard or Kavalos Riders as battle line, but after that it seems like the army is pretty limited. Some good, some bad.

The new Gravelords seem like there a dozen more option on how you could build them. Death Rattle centric, Zombies, Direwolves, Blood Knights, etc. But are they actually going to perform well?

The initial impression seems to be that Gravelords LOOK like a mid tier army. Which is a good spot to be in in my opinion. With some skill you should still win games, but you won't be seen as that guy running the new meta army. But it depends what your local group is like.

Regaddless, there's the huge caveats that no one has played them yet, and that the new edition could fundamentally change what makes an army good (we're expecting big changes to command points and battalions for instance, and its likely there will be tweaks to victory point scoring etc).

Performance always changes basically. Pick an army you like the flavour of and are going to enjoy painting, that should always be the priority imo.

AoS doesn't currently work like that. All battletomes are capable of competing, all data sheets and unit choices are not, which is the pitfall. I find it best to buy my armies based off the themes I like.

For example,

I like traditional fantasy skeletons, so for my Soulblight force I ordered a bunch of skeletons, black knights and blood knights.
For my Lumineth I like archers and spears, so that's what I got.
For my Seraphon, I like tiny lizards and slaan.
For my Orks I like Iron Jawz.
