So my dreadnoughts where brilliant right. My first painted SM. And the I varnished them with Citdale Munition Varnish. Not only did this dull down all the colours and some transitions. It also turned the turbo dork milky white.

Anybody have some experience or thought about this? I am miffled.

Turbo Dork what? Metallics? Colorshift?

If it was colorshift paint, then yeah, that'd do it. You're not supposed to varnish those as it interferes with their reflective properties. If it was ordinary metallics then that's odd and a pic would definitely help.

As for dulling down colors, that's what matte varnish does, which Munitorum Varnish is supposed to be. If you want a little more vibrancy to it, a satin varnish is a better option.

But a satin varnish makes everything shiny, does it not?

It was not colourshift. Only the metalics. (Although they shift quite a lot they as well.)

A frien sugested varnishing them earlier in the process. Makes some sence.

If the varnish you used dulled down the colors, then it was more matte than the paint itself. Gloss is shiny, but satin is anywhere in between matte and gloss, and if you like the raw finish of the paint it's worth experimenting to find a satin varnish that matches it.

Metallics will definitely change appearance moreso than other paints as they're shinier to begin with. You can get that shine back by going back with a gloss or satin varnish on specifically the metallic areas.

Yeah. I figure I will change up the order in further projects.

I think if you varnish a paint that needs to be highly reflective like colour shift then it will always reduce its effect, my reasoning is that the the varnish will reflect some of the light before it gets to the paint. Even gloss or satin.
