Dunno what's up, but getting a 403/Forbidden error. Couldn't remember who we're supposed to contact about this anymore, so I started a thread here on dakka since I figure most of the relevant people would notice.

License renewal. It probably would have been a quick fix for someone more computer savvy, but I couldn’t figure it out until the customer service team sent me an email with a specific link and directions.

There were... events.
The reset thread is readable on ETC if you want to look.
Any chance of a summary/timeline of recent history? I tried looking and it's just a thousand 'election' threads, bitching about modding/ownership/rules in some godawful tangled up mess, and general clusterfeth arguing. I could probably puzzle it out over a few hours, but I could do something more useful with my brain cells instead.

He wanted to hand the reins to someone interested. I am co-running the site with Newtfarming, although I still need to learn the ropes and finish getting rules and enforcement hammered out. A lot of the drama comes from another poster, a deposed former-mod, who wanted to take the site and run it in a way that many felt went against the nature of the site.
The current mods are all well-regarded members who volunteered. They have had a confirmation vote. There will be elections for new mods when their terms end.

I mean, that's once possible conclusion. The other one is that when you take bad-faith garbage posters and refuse to moderate them, they suck all the oxygen out of every thread and destroy the forum.
Since it was the same problem here as it was there with literally the same people, and pretty much the exact same thing at The Wasteland, at some point we have to consider at least the possibility that it's not actually a problem with the subject matter, but a problem with the moderation and allowing literally the same 4 or 5 people to keep doing the same thing, over and over again.
Clearly the answer to this will be yet another forum, somewhere else.
Spoiler:
From Nov 30th, 2020:
Ouze wrote:So, talking past Dakka here, since politics adds little value to the forum and much resources: You have to be willing to moderate bad faith. I can't just concisely express all that bad faith entrails: much like obscenity, you know it when you see it.
The most clear and recent example would be from the covid thread, when someone was willing to post something incorrect, have multiple posters debunk it, and just keep repeating it over and over again. Since it was on dakka, and it was neither profanity nor rude; it was allowed to continue disrupting the thread until the thread was no longer workable. You see this sort of behavior time and time again here, whether it be female space marines or Anita Sarkeesian or any number of a bevy of topics that expose what is functionally a structural problem in the forum and it's weakness to a heckler's veto when that heckler doesn't cross some specific, clear lines.
If you're not willing to moderate bad faith arguments, you are doomed to fail in this hypothetical venture. The road to that failure begins with deciding every view/opinion has equal value to a discussion on a topic.
That's my 2 cents, anyway.

Ritides wrote:Ouze, while I appreciate your answer above, I think the in-practice application of an admin deciding what is / isn't a "good faith" argument would be pretty terrible for discussion.
I'm not recounting the above to pat myself on the back, but to point out that I think the flaws with this approach were really, really self evident from the start.
(I would like to say the heckler's veto does now seem to get shut down on Dakka substantially more since when i posted this, for what it's worth.

That has got to be an enormous undertaking, but I think the only way it's going to work. I genuinely wish you the best of luck, and do not envy the task.

That’s pretty much the pattern. One bad faith poster ties up whole threads, derails them, and makes productive discussion impossible.
There are posters who have differing viewpoints who don’t turn their threads into garbage fires. I was hoping we could teach the posters who do how not to do that, but often they leave one way or another before that.
Yes, the summary above by Scrabb is a good one! Scrabb is also one of the posters who was able to share a conservative viewpoint in a way that aided discussion. Unfortunately, I was unable to retain him and a few like him that were dearly needed for a robust debate :(
I hope now that Bob, newt and their team are running the show, folks like you might give it another chance! What the place really needs is more high quality posters contributing. I'll give it one more plug just in case
While I'm not actively posting much (my goal was always to read and be exposed to interesting debates, not to participate myself), the new team has my full support and I am wishing them all the success in the world in continuing the project

Tankies are people who idolize the Soviet Union and Stalin, who defend all their policies, including running over protesters with tanks (thus the name).
