Every once in a while I dump out my bits box and just randomly browse what there is. Every now and again two pieces line up that get me wondering, and that leads to conversions that are free, or nearly free. To supplement this I raid the local FLGS bits box, and look for cheap bits on ebay There are always bits that go cheap because no one wants them. Everyone wanted Valkyrie wings and they were expensive. Valkyrie hulls on the other hand could barely be given away.

So, have any of you ever pulled of the "free model" bonus? Currently I'm working on an Invader ATV conversion for my Thunderwarriors conversion army. Based heavily on the larger Servo Hauler, a Contemptor Multimelta, Stormcast torso, and Assault Biker Gunner bits.

Free, not so much. But I have taken existing cheap models to convert for units that either have no model or have really expensive models.

For example, for a while there IoB Warpfire Throwers were cheap as chips, and there was no Doomflayer. Stick a big round shield on the front, adorn with various blades and bits and bobs, and viola! A Doomflayer for next to nothing.

CHAOS! PANIC! DISORDER!
My job here is done.
