Have I missed something in terms of Ork rules, or proxying generally? There seem to have been a few recent releases of Ork band models (ArtelW and Wargame Exclusive spring to mind), and I can't think of an obvious reason for them. Yes, the models are cool, and I know that I NEED some, but since there doesn't seem to be an obvious place to slot them into the armies, I am struggling to understand what prompted the releases....? Or what I could sensibly use them for...
Wargame Exclusive
And yes, I know that I could get MDF stages for them too. Which similarly baffles me.

Goffik Rok Band / Goff Rokkers have existed since RT: While they used to have rules, now they are just cool models to have.

Yes, I knew about the old rules. I was just surprised to see recent rules for them.

Maybe think of them like the rukkatruck squigbuggy and other assorted stuff Orks bring to the tailgate parties that other races call 'battles,' just enjoying the local atmosphere and cultural exchange.

It's because the companies producing them know it's easy to play off nostalgia.

Always wanted to do an Ork band diorama.
They would be playing at the 'Ard Rokk Cafe (naturally), and there'd be a truck smashed through a wall, as there should be.
Crow's Nest Gretchin ( top right) would make a great DJ.

It sounds like you're all of the same opinion as me then. And some awesome nostalgia is always in order!

So you can put an Ork with a flamer guitar on top of your Trukk.

Does there really need to be a reason to make fun, cool, ork models? Beyond "We bet this'll sell." that is?
40k use: I want to take that Stompa, rip its head off, & convert the top to a stage.
Other use:
I have this D&D adventure(?) I've written that takes place during an annual all night party that I run every couple of campaigns.
It's all done 3d & get's more elaborate each time I run it - painted minis, built the complete tavern, built the tavern grounds, the barn, 3d details & effects.... I've got upwards of 150 different "party goers" minis. And several bands (punk, skeletons, a few bards, Max Reebo & co. from SW, the original Goff Rockas, the current Noise Marine, KISS done in 28mm miniatures) that I rotate -"This years guest band is ____!" And I'm always on the lookout for more fun figs to include the next time. So more orks will fit great!
It started off as a riff on the old "And you all meet in the tavern" cliche campaign opening. It's evolved into its own thing within my campaign world with several players looking forward to the next time it runs.

No, no. Rule of cool always works, and I'm happy with that as a reason enough. I just wondered if anyone had actually used them for specific in-game things. I was actually toying with using them as a squad of burnaboyz, where the sound of the rokk deals the damage rather than (or in some cases, in addition to) the flames.

Noize Boyz, then? Rather than Burna Boyz?
It's a pretty good idea.

If I didn't have such a painful backlog I'd be sorely tempted to buy a set and paint them up as a desk ornament. They're about the coolest thing ever.

There is an 8th edition datasheet (narrative/open play only) in the May 2020 White Dwarf (the one with Ghazgkull from the Prophecy of the Wolf box on the cover) on page 27. I don't see any reason not to use that, if you want to give any of those models an outing.
I was gonna say they're still official until this morning, but then I remembered they're not matched-play rules so you don't need to bother with that ****
