This is a project I have been sitting on for approaching a decade now, and I am glad to finally be embarking on it! The updates are likely to be infrequent as time and bitz supplies allow, but I have something of an image dump for the last few weeks progress. All images are in spoiler tags to avoid formatting issues.

It all started with this image in my 3.5 ed Imperial Guard codex, found in the wonderful regimental traits section at the back. There are other images available of Savlar, including recently, but this is the vibe I want to go for and what has stuck with me all these years. I have a force of Armageddon Steel Legion and I figured some Savlar scum bags would make great cannon fodder for the mechanised troops.
Spoiler:

My plan is to make a 30-strong platoon of the Savlar 26th Chem-dogs (officially the Savlar 26th Penal Legion). They earned the moniker "Guttershades" due to the stealthy manouevring of their light infantry in the underhives of Armageddon. The units are going to be barebones infantry, but I am still aiming to give them plenty of character ( I am of two minds about whether to use them as infantry squads or a conscript platoon- I've already built a sergeant but if I make three extra lasgunners I can use them as either). So far, I have built a mere tenth of that number...

A lof of the parts are going to be refurbished from old assembled models and bitz dredged up form my bitzbox, but the scruffy vibe works with the Savlar. I am chronically incapable of using greenstuff, so there are a few work arounds I have developed over the years.

First up is Sergeant Greg "Pixie" Smith. His nickname was acquired due to his short stature, but anyone saying it to his face is likely to end up needing some new teeth. He has managed to scavenge a bit of padded armour as a pauldron, and his chainsword was conscientiously brought back into service from where it had been abandoned on the corpse of a commissar. Any claims that the commissar had been shot in the back and was, in fact, still warm are entirely unsubstantiated and malicious hearsay.

Spoiler:

Next we have Trooper Bilious Clive, seen here throwing a grenade. He is unsually fervent for the 26th, and has some scripture attached to his salvaged Kantrael-pattern lasgun. His lasgun strap has been crafted from a staple I bent into shape, which frankly worked better than I thought it would. I usually find it quite hard to get the Cadian grenade arm to look natural in a pose, but I think the angle of the legs helped facilitate it here.

Spoiler:

Finally, here is Trooper Donny Craggen. He has been particularly successful in nabbing a few extra armour plates.

Spoiler:

I also took a group shot, and a picture to show how Pixie is genuinely shorter than the others, especially when accounting for the poses (I do like the height variation, adds a bit more of a natural feel).

Spoiler:

I have some WIP images too, but I'm gonna give them their own post.

Paint may or may not arrive at some point...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I am currently working on the next lasgun trooper. I want to use GSC autogun arms with the autogun swapped for a Voss-pattern lasgun I have here. Currently deciding on the pose. This trooper will have snagged Cadian-style flak torso armour that only has mild battle damage.

The torso and legs in question.

Spoiler:

The parts I am currently considering.

Spoiler:

I think I will use the arms that give the trooper a sort of ready position with the lasgun pointed down, like they are waiting at a corner ready to step out of cover.

This is a cool project. I loved the versatility of the regimental character section back in the 3.5 codex and it's awesome to see someone bring those drawings to life. Have you decided yet on a color scheme for the uniforms? Or will it be a mishmash to reflect their umm... tactically acquired gear?

Yeah, it is a brilliant book, and my copy is looking pretty threadbare! The advice for which doctrines to choose also gives a lot of information about the character of the regiments- I'm planning my force around the idea of stealthy scavengers in large part because the Savlar are described as deploying a lot of light infantry (which had rules for moving faster through difficult terrain, infiltrating, and using snipers).

I have been wondering about this. As a force, I want them to look appropriate next to my Steel Legion, which are painted in the classic mustard trenchcoats. As such, I want to keep the clothes of the Savlar as similar drab ochre tones (including the odd "liberated" Steel Legion trenchcoat painted the same as my legionaries) mixed with browns, and then to have something of a mishmash for the armour panels, which will mostly be adapted or looted from a variety of forces fighting alongside the regiment on Armageddon. Overall, I think the palette is going to trend to shades of greys and blacks for the armour, because I figure that most forces fighting on Armageddon will have fatigues and gear suited for fighting in urban combat and out on the ash wastes.

Not dived too deep into the colour scheme yet though.

Awesome stuff, some cool conversions there already. A full force lile this will be eye candy on the table.

Looking forward for more!

Thanks folks!

I have built another trooper and have a WIP.

This is Trooper Scraps. They have salvaged a battered Cadian-style flak torso and are using a Voss-pattern lasgun (married onto GSC arms with the autogun removed).

Spoiler:

This is my current WIP. I figured I needed some bayonets to be fixed and swapped out the autogun on the GSC neophyte arm for a Kantrael-pattern with bayonet. Still thinking about what arm will fit well with the model.

I've not had much progress on the Savlar since my last update due to working a block of nights. However, managed to find a bit of time now before my next night shifts. Here is a current WIP.

Spoiler:

Nothing else has happened for the model with the adapted GSC neophyte arm, I'm waiting on some Orlocks and I think I will find a better arm to use there. You can see the pile I need to tidy up of all the arms I've been looking through... plus other assorted debris that I am rubbish at tidying

The other two I've made progress on since this picture (one is basically complete).

Hopefully more pictures today. I'm aiming to have a ten-strong unit by the end of the month, before I get distracted by things like the new-in-box squad of Kasrkin I just discovered rooting around in a draw for bitz

Eh, I definitely haven't finished a 10-strong unit. The newly-released GW Outcasts are perfect for parts to mix into the kitbash, so I want to get the kit to help bulk out the force before I go any further.

I have completed the following last month. I did also get distracted by the Kasrkin and have cleaned them up ready for conversion/assembly.

Firstly we have this trooper with a lasgun. The legs are from a Corpsegrinder model.

Spoiler:

Then there is this trooper with an unsanctioned lasgun of unknown provenance (possibly gang-produced). He is left-handed.
Spoiler:

I have been rooting through old lore regarding the 3rd War for Armageddon, and I may expand this into a general thread for my Armageddon-based Imperial Guard forces. I have lots of conversion ideas for other forces on Armageddon, and 4 boxes of the last-chance-to-buy Steel Legion squad on order, so it would make sense to chart the progress here. I am also aiming to start my long-planned project to modify my old Cadians into respirator versions for Armageddon, so will probably put that here too.
