As the title says.

The french version of Nachmund was plagued by a lot of typos and mistakes (many changes to secondaries were wrong for example).

As a result, Games Workshop released on their website, FOR FREE, the full PDF and all typos and mistakes were corrected.

I cannot stop thinking about how this is another proof that their current business model, with physical books, is a complete joke

EDIT : needless to say, the buyers are VERY happy about this situation (that's a sarcasm).

In the Grand Scheme of things, France is only a small part of their business, so, they'll just break contract with the translators and move on.

Everything is wrong about their printed policy, but i don't see this as a game-changer. And i'm French !

This is good news. They would better have their translation process ironed out next time. I did not have time to get into my nearby Warhammer store to buy the document, which I need as a tournament organizer. But frankly all the turmoil in the warhammer french forum, about mistakes left and right, in the french version made me think twice about it. Well, now my old trusty printer will warm up a bit soon.

This will certainly be interesting for fellow bilingual Canadians out there, and anyone here with reasonable grasp of French.
For English speakers users here, well at least the french munitorum field manual 2022 can be downloaded for free also, which will provide you units costs in a not so difficult to understand language.

Which isn't that useful as points aren't main thing on ca and can be got for free from gw source anyway...

I ended up getting side tracked on the webpage and opened the freebie detachments to find out the French names for Power Sword among other things that entertained me.

Who even knows if it was the translators' fault. For all we know, GW sent them the wrong stuff to translate. We know from prior experience GW is terrible at proofreading and that errors constantly make it into their products, no matter what language they are.

Yea there's definitely more that could have prevented this from being a thing at all.

For having worked in translation before. More often then not small contract jobs tend to be shitshows. And not because of us translators. I wouldn't be surprised if someone from GW's marketing department butted in an made things more difficult for everyone involved

Things look even more strange for the French translation on GW's stuff (from an outsider's perspective) since were kind of in a transition period where a lot of localization choices are changing, seemingly without reasons.

by the quality of the different translations, and the heavy use of trademarked english names for units and wargear, I am not sure GW not just doing a copy&paste from google translate without ever anyone who speaks the other languages reading the text before goes to the printer (for the german version, the mix of english and german makes them unreadable anyway that most players go with the original english book anyway)

Well that wouldnt even be that unusual. I just got tv series dvd that has probably worst english subtitles I have ever seen. I swear they used computer.

"And then, like a water melon my head would...." turned into "and then my head would become like a prepaid IC card".

Not kidding I know exactly WHY that mistake happened but who is another thing. Hard to imagine any human translator would be so inadept he/she would make that mistake though.

Well that's the thing, often when you see things like this it's that no translator has touched the thing
You wouldn't believe how often corporations will relent contracting actual translators and will try to pay the absolute minimum for the service ! Nowadays, in the worse cases they'll pass it through a machine translator and send it for distribution.

From the look of the french translated codexes and other stuff, I don't think they rely on machine translators. Or at least not solely. The quality of french translation is not that bad generally. I don't know about german, maybe the problem is of another level. But the mistakes in CA 2022 FR seemed so absurd, that it lets me think they provided an unfinished pre-version to the translators ; or the translators were given so little time to do the job, that they may have relied too much on copy/paste from 2021 / 2020 documents.

Once upon a time, there existed a french GW studio, that provided us very high quality translations, from codexes to White Dwarf. They gave us very inventive and evocative namings for all the weird stuff that goes into the GW original versions. Ork codexes, among others, were a ton of fun to read. But this is no more.

Yeah that's why I think this went through machine translator. I had asked my sister would she want to try this series with english subtitles. She wasn't so I started to do it in finnish(i'm finding it actually fun process) and after doing just the opening scene I realized bloody good idea to do the finnish anyway. The english version can hardly be even called english and it's messing up meanings even when it's understandable.

Yeah that's pretty sad. GW even used to have a seat in France IIRC. But everything was downsized some years ago.
