Netflix is partnering with 2K and Take-Two Interactive to produce a film adaptation of the renowned video game franchise BIOSHOCK. Would you kindly stay tuned?

Looks like it's still a way off...

It's going to be tough to properly cast Andrew Ryan.

"You listen to me. While I will admit to a certain cynicism, the fact is that I am a naysayer and hatchetman in the fight against violence. I pride myself in taking a punch and I'll gladly take another because I choose to live my life in the company of Gandhi and King. My concerns are global. I reject absolutely revenge, aggression, and retaliation. The foundation of such a method... is love. I love you Sheriff Truman." - Twin Peaks

Only way it'd work if it's about the leadup to the fall of Rapture. I can't imagine a decent story otherwise.

I think you do it Rashomon style, with Jack's work as mostly a framing device for flashbacks that piece together the full story.

Basically, if you strip 95% of the combat out of the game, the core of a solid movie is right there.

I agree, the initial population changing after the discovery of Adam would be the best approach. Basically a visual version of the audio notes.

Bioshock infinite shows that the story of Bioshock is really the story of Bioshock 2.

A girl in a tower. The guy who comes to save her. Just because the girls tower was heading down into the deepest part of rapture doesn't mean it's not a tower.

The show could literally be anything so long as it has the tower/girl/guy trope and magic mcguffin that gives powers.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

I’ve generally felt Netflix’s various video game series have been quite good, so I will look forward to this and hope their streak continues.

This is one game I have started to play a number of times, but stopped. My boys say there are great games and I should continue.

I wonder if I need to play, just to appreciate the movie? Probably not, as the movie should hold my interest and be good on its own merit, right?

Probably not. I’ve watched several of their others without playing the games and it’s been fine.

I love Bioshock and Infinite (not played 2) so this has piqued my interest but I'm not sure how it will work as a movie. The games are very story driven but take full advantage of the medium and stripping away the game parts doesn't leave a huge amount left. Though 'would you kindly' could be done well. I like infinite_array's idea of the fall of Rapture, there is a mediocre book based on it and it's an area ripe to be done justice.

The most important question though is...

Who will be bold enough and attempt to play Cohen's Masterpiece for the show?

The plot of Bioshock, the game, is pretty simple:

Spoiler:
Guy arrives in strange place, learns some new powers, overcomes some obstacles to kill the bad guy, finds out his helper is the real bad guy, undergoes a transformation to defeat the real bad guy. As a movie, it would be a pretty straight forward adventure/action movie.

The real story is told in flash back, using the games audio files, and the occasional ghost. I really, really hope they don't chicken out and try to tell the story in a linear fashion. Do the flashbacks, and show how the city fell over the course of the movie.
