Just curious as I haven't kept up with the various codex books for all armies like I used to back in 3rd/4th editions. Do any Loyalist chapters use the chaos armor flourishes like little arrow points, sharp angles, etc in their armor instead of the straight or nicely curving lines? Basically, I'm asking if there is some chapter out there in official lore that looks closer to pre-heresy Night Lords in armor style but that obviously remains loyalist. I've seen possibly Soul Drinkers and Black Dragons on occasion portrayed with them but I wasn't sure if any others were or if any were consistently using them.

The Mortifactors collect skulls and bones from their enemies to hand from their armour if that's what you're looking for.

That's definitely one thing I am looking for. I'm trying to find a way to use chaos bits but still be canon loyalist without going full homebrew fanfic. I wasn't aware they did that so thanks.

It depends on the bitz I suppose. There's always the "GrimDark" angle to explore with Marines and some Chaos parts work better than others. Baroque armour doesn't mean Chaos but a shoulder pad entirely made of skulls and spikes might be a little harder to pass off

I've been doing some research and this came up from an older edition that I wasn't aware of. Most of the chapters don't have any images to go off of though but if I have to resort to homebrew spikey loyalist fanfic then one of them might be a good starting point.

Looks like only one chapter, the Vorpal Swords (which sound like a D&D player's creation!) are fully loyalist once again... and their paint scheme is hideous!

You could go for the Relictors.
https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Relictors
They hoarded and used Chaos relics against the forces of Chaos and often worked alongside Radical Inquisitors to this end. They were supposedly excommunicated but then got featured with some Primaris art so it's possible they're still kicking about.

Very true and thanks! I had forgotten about them. They're reduced to just a single wulfen unit in the current iteration(s), right? Back in 3e, they were an entire sublist for the SW.

Thanks again. I haven't seen them in chaos armor but obviously just like the other chapters that go exiling into the Eye they usually pick pu a few things.

Depending on how much converting you want to do, there's a bit you can get away with.

Fluffwise and Artwise?

- Black Dragons - as shown have that archaic style trim.
- Relictors literally use daemon weapons and - relics so its feasible their armour may have warped a bit as a result.
- Mortifactors adorn themselves with skulls and bones, as well as chains as a sort of death cult.
- 13th Company Space Wolves literally replace parts of their armour with scavenged armour from the Eye of Terror.

It's perfectly feasible that Dark Angels use the same pointy trims in a manner similar to the Black Dragons (look at the points on the hilts of their power swords!) for aesthetics.

Hells, you could easily use the generic CSM 'trim' with chaos icons and rougher more organic bits like horns and teeth filed down and away to make a more baroque, ornate looking bit of power armour.

Now only a CSM player.

Admech, Knights and the Titan legions all use arrow points on their armour detail - look at the armour plates on the upper leg section in the dune crawler

So no reason it couldn't feature on marine armour

Yeah, that's my personal goal/premise. Not full on chaos with trophy racks, mutations, and iconography but rather just the more ornate aggressive aesthetics. With the constant trend to more warpification of CSM, it's getting more and more difficult to succeed in my particular goal. As for Dark Angels, I suspect them using more chaos aligned armor styles may trigger uncomfortable questions from the other sons of Lionel. Though it's a good point that the earlier HH stuff has tons of similar but loyalist details as well.

True. I hadn't thought about looking outside the faction. I'd be hard pressed to find cross compatibility in bits though.

Salamanders might be a good pull here. Their current exclusive characters all go at least halfway-in on the trim game, although there's a recurring "fire" motif that you might have to convert with plasticard for complete trim accuracy.

Holy crap... I think I may have found some fan art that encapsulates the style I was hoping for... this particular rendition of the Exsanguinators. It's not official from what I can tell but it gets the combo of styling I was referring to. It's a renegade but not fallen chapter though being one of the Blood Angel deviants. The various wikis list them as being referenced only in the novels (so no art there) and the 5e codex (which I should still have in storage as I played BA during that one) but nothing comes up for official art in a quick search. Looking through his general gallery, his 40k astartes art reminds me of the style in the old FFG Deathwatch books which is a good thing.

From what I've read they aren't Renegades, rather they just suffer heavily from the Black Rage like the Flesh Tearers.

I stand corrected! They are indeed loyalists. Even better for me.

Then you have Blood Ravens, known for 'acquiring' SM bits wherever they could. For example:
