The game table is the most important tool for play, but the least discussed. So what are people gaming on these days? Is it still two pushed together 30"x72" folding tables from the hardware store?

I'm in a small city condo so I use a fold out table or the island. All of my terrain is modular sections of MDF or plywood.

This is an 8x4 setup for 40k and a smaller 4x4 Frostgrave table I set up with 2x2 tiles.

Check out https://www.reddit.com/r/TerrainBuilding/ if youre interested in more of this type of work

I've always wanted a proper wooden gaming table but haven't had the need for it.

I have a few 2.5'x6' trestle tables that I push together.

These are the last three tables I did:

Are we just talking about the table we put our stuff on?

Our FLG has a bunch of 8X4 tables as well as some other smaller ones for games of various sizes along with custom terrain boards to go on them.

This is somewhat of an overview of the tables-

Spoiler:

This is an example with my one of my terrain mats on the table-

this is how they look with some store custom made terrain tables on them-

My table itself is two NSF wire half racks with two sets of shelves beneath, and the top is two closet doors laid out to make an 8x4 foot area. The shelving beneath it allows me to store a lot of the terrain I use in boxes beneath it, along with other hobby bits and bobs.

Since I have the pleasure of keeping my table up 24/7 this size allows me to have two games of 4x4 going on in progress, or a single big battle. I have the luxury of being able to walk away from a battle, and then coming back to it later.

It is not as fancy as some of the other folks tables that we will see in this thread, BUT I did source all of it at nearby big box retailers so it is accessible and relatively inexpensive.

I can also pack most of the terrain into a single "underbed" container and take it to the local gaming place to put on a game too.

Nothing fancy. 2x 2.5’x6’ folding tables with a 4x6 mat and not enough mixed terrain. Had to leave my old 4x8 behind after the divorce.

Recently playing on small tables at the FLGS for 25PL crusade games.

Kitchen table, which when extended( two panels pull apart to reveal a third in the middle ) comes to about 5.5ft * 2.5ft.

Nearby is a kitchen surface which is almost 4.5ft * 3ft.

Being resourceful we sometimes use the two kitchen stools underneath the kitchen surface to hold a foam board. Its a bit of room to offload components from the table or surface, freeing up gaming room etc.

The biggest challenge isn't so much the size of the game board, but the off-board components which can be a bloody nightmare. Blackstone Fortress and Adeptus Titanicus are the worst offenders, while other games aren't so bad as we only need a bit of room for a dice tray and thats it.

That said, I'd love a magnificent casino-size gaming table. Preferably the one that stands out and takes up the most room...

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.

My game table arrangements run the gamut. For a basic KoW game or similar, I'll just break out my main table and pop down some terrain: It's four 1x7 closet door panels (painted and textured for desert) resting on two 1x3's that I set atop the much used Ikea dining-room table that is in the basement and serves the family for games, crafts, hobbying and larger dinners with more than 2 adult guests.

I'm a big proponent of the folding door panels as they are cheap, relatively lightweight, very rigid and since they compact to a footprint of about 1 foot by one foot, they may be easier to store upright than a folding table or two.

For a convention I'll bring out the big layout and use whatever tables they have for my Mech Attack 28mm games which usually are somewhere in the neighborhood of 7x7 give or take a foot.

I use the same terrain and table covering (grey vinyl table cloth with some spray and drybrushing) for smaller sci-fi games at home (necromunda, post apoc, various sci-fi rules, etc) on my home tables.

For a more terrain-intensive fantasy game I've got various options for wilderness (desert and forest) and village.

As far as the additional surfaces, when folks come over for club night, I've also got a 3x5 Ikea desk table (which can be overlayed to get to 6x4) and various folding tables. Can cram 2 big and 2 skirmish tables at once, but 2-3 tables a night is much more manageable. Here's a shot with a Planet 28 game mostly out of shot on the left on a card table, The big table setup in the middle for KoW and the Ikea Desk/Table without overlay on the right for Car Wars.

Yes, just the table / structure itself, but feel free to show it all off if you want. I don't think anyone will mind seeing terrain.

I'm still using two 30"x72" folding tables, but am in an early preliminary stage of making my own.

At some point while working at Babies R Us, our crib displays became display only models. When I closed my store in 2018 during Wave 1 of closures, the liquidator tried to sell them. I stomped hard and told him no and my District Manager backed me up. At this point, we did not know the whole company was done so we had to do liquidation like the company was going to continue. When it was announced we were done as a whole, I was able to get 2 foot boards from 2 cribs that were on display. This crib was BEEFCAKE. The corners are 3x3 solid wood:

I cut out the slates, added some 2x6 for stability, added a heavy plywood shelf for cases/large storage and some 2x4s and light plywood plywood shelf for poster storage.

Years ago I bought a 4x6 top from a closing GW store. I have it covered with some corkboard(?) when I am building or not gaming.

I was also able to get a bunch of terrian parts from the same GW store.

This is actually my 2nd table I built like this. When my girlfriend (now wife) and I moved into an apartment in 2007(?), a previous renter left a twin size headboard in the basement storage area. The landlord said he would toss it in the coming week and I said I would take it. I essentially did the same thing.

Here's mine. It's stil WIP, but already functional.

It is foldable, the right side legs are removable and it converts to a painting station.

It's 6'x4'. When in "play mode", paint storage rests under the middle section. The light is built in, there is storage for four 2'x2' XPS board sections and two MDF surface boards that are not used when in "paint mode". There is also some storage space under the main desk section and functional rails to attach 4'x1' extension boards on short edges and small extension boards on the ends of the long edges. It still needs wheels attachment done and obviously needs a paintjob.

I have 3 of these IKEA tables:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/IKEA-LINNMON-ADILS-Table-120x60/dp/B00GPQHZN8/ref=asc_df_B00GPQHZN8/?tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=223139763264&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=5075632326522385441&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9045888&hvtargid=pla-422098647751&th=1

They are very easy to store and are almost (but not quite) 48x24 inches which means I can make a 4ft x 4ft or 6ft x 4ft table depending on which game I'm playing.

The legs go in a bag and the tables just stack away.

WIP, and on hold until I move to a new house, but I am working on a modular 40k board. Primarily with an urban theme, but planning to also extend it to be able to do some more rural pieces at some point too.
The tiles are 8x8" or multiples of that, with some integral terrain and some scatter.
The goal is to get the modularity of "mat + freestanding terrain", but with the look and feel of integrated terrain.

That looks fantastic. I'm not usually a big fan of 40k-themed terrain, but yours is so well done/painted/unified. Are those LEGO supports? What other kits are mixed in there?

Thank you, and good eye, those are indeed lego supports. The concrete walls at the bottom are also lego. The factory is mostly mantic, there is of course plenty of GW necromunda terrain, and also a fair bit of Archon rampart bits.

My current infinity board.

There is a bit more scatter on the table usually - I was setting up a couple of tables for a local tournament and I do the major building placements then do the scatter as a final stage.
To keep with its "Cyberpunk city" vibe, it all lights up, too. There's EL wire "neon" effects as well as the more commonplace LED stuff.

My Sci Fi City is more contemporary/masonry based, but if starting from scratch now I would probably have gone with something more like yours.

Game table just got a major upgrade.

Still using the 4 (door) panel 4x7 with dessert sand texture pictured earlier, but that's now my secondary.

My buddy was getting out of the hobby and I got his 4x6 (plus end sections) Gaddis Gaming table topper with custom plastic end covers. On one end the printing is damaged from my ill-conceived reattachment but it still looks pretty nice and sports the club's logo. It adds 5 inches on each side of my 38” wide table without any need for additional support. I also got his 4x6 mats including the Zuzzy shown here.

Was a club night tonight and with this and the 4x7 we were able to have two simultaneous, full size KoW Battles for the first time.
