Been playing 40k Armageddon on the PC the last few weeks and it's given me a yen to do a Steel Legion army.. we play 2nd Ed, did the Steel Legion get a list in this edition? They're not in the '95 Guard codex

No, are utterly forgotten and now discontinued as of this year.

Steel Legion first appeared in 2000, in codex Armageddon, so are a 3rd ed list in origin. The only real distinguishing feature they had over other regiments was everything had to be in a transport, even if they could not normally take them (apart from Rough Riders).

I'd imagine much of their quirks can easily be done with the 2nd ed IG list.

Nope. However, the Regiment differences in 2nd Ed were just aesthetic.

Armageddon got a 3rd edition expansion to the IG codex, and proper regiment rules in the 4e codex as well.

It just so happens that this was on the free table @ my flgs yesterday...I grabbed it for my Salamanders. Tho after reading the steel legion stuff I might be inclined to go their route if I tire from my traitor guard.

Steel Legion get a REGIMENT trait - they don't use a different army list but anything you want canbe recreated with the current codex - any guard infantry except conscripts and stormtroopers can have a chimera, lascannon sentinel scout walkers are an option, and I'm pretty sure there's a stratagem allowing officers to officer without getting out of their APC.

Ah. Apologies. Honestly aside from special characters I didn't think there were any meaningful differences between regiments (except stormtroopers) until after the first 3rd edition codex.

Also the steel legion regiment trait actively denies their vehicles from benefitting from the AoC the rest of the Guard got in the dataslate so...

As a side note, the Steel Legion models were sculpted by the Perry twins, who also sculpted the 2nd Edition Imperial Guard regiments.

The Armageddon-themed reboot of the Epic rules had some information on the organization of the Steel Legions.

As others said they were not in 2nd edition, the way to do them for 2nd would be to buy every squad a chimera and pick a vet trait you think fits.

Hello. I did not know the steel legion was also a realisation by the Perry twins. I mean, they look significatively different than the 2nd edition guardsmen. The equipment is quite different, lasguns are better proportioned etc...

Can someone give me the reference of White Dwarfs issues (or rather dates) that were presenting this regiment ? I'm curious, so if I can grab the right old WD issues from ebay, it would be cool.

WD 247 and 248 US (might be off 1 for UK versions) Aug/Sep 2000. Corresponding with the release of the Armageddon book.

In 2nd edition they'd just be regular guardsmen, there were no specific rules for different types. For thematic purposes you'd want them all in transports.
