So... yeah, the Edgerunners anime from Studio Trigger is already up on Netflix.

And it's unrepentantly and gloriously over the top:

https://youtu.be/JtqIas3bYhg

I'm up to ep 7, and so far I'm liking it quite a bit. It's crude, it's dark, it's pretty, and stylish (very much style over substance, really, but that's Cyberpunk for you), and it sells the setting and the characters' motivations quite well enough.

All in all, I'm having fun with it... but it is all in all a very depressing tale, and it's bound to end in tragedy.

I’m up thru episode 3, and half of the last episode because I didn’t realize the site im on defaulted to that one now.

Well, that sucks.

This show was almost on par with original cowboy bepop. Slightly worse writing but some FANTASTIC animation and characters.

I've played through the game on PC twice, once in patch 1.5 and once about a year ago. They took a ton of inspiration from the in game city, the vehicles, and everything. Great job. 10/10 show

About 2/3s of the way through watching it. Have not played the computer game, but have played the old RPG, so fairly up on the source material. It’s doing a decent job capturing the vibe, enjoying it so far.

Did not realize they'd gotten Trigger to do this. Guess I need to give it a try.

...and finished. That was great, very much true to the spirit of the original RPG and to the spirit of Trigger, for a story that's much darker than their usual fare.

Right up the alley for anyone that likes 40k or Necromunda

I'm rewatching it again while painting this week

I had zero expectations going into it. Jesus Christ. This show was good...especially episode 6. Surprisingly heartfelt series. It's not quite on the same level as Cowboy Bepop however. The animation is fine but there's a lot of cost saving frames in the series to a much greater degree than in Bepop or honestly most anime that I've watched. I can forgive stylization choices that miss the mark for me but the constant still frames throughout was a little annoying.

Does it have Johnny Silverhand in it - if so not interested - otherwise might try it

Nah, it's a completely different story with different characters, set sometime before the CP2077 game.

I mean, seeing as how Cowboy Bebop is basically one of the best anime series ever, that's high praise indeed. But yeah, I also thought that CB was one series Edgerunners could be compared to, as thematically it feels similar.

As to the animation, part of it is Studio Trigger's style, but I agree there are some places where it feels like they did it on the cheap. The visuals are incredibly pretty, though.

It feels odd to say this about anime, but I thought it could use more filler.

We want from young and green, first piece of ‘ware, all the way to edging on cyberpsycho between episodes.

Now, I don’t think they needed to have all that fleshed out. We still care about the characters and are vested in the outcome. They get the hooks in with what they have done. But I would have like to have seen a few more runs, little more worldbuilding, little more character development on-screen.

But I loved the series. Would recommend.

They rushed it and did a lot of montage scenes to fast forward the plot

I think they said it was a one and done anime after the ten episodes - they easily could have slowed it down and had a ton of content on the hero's journey upward

Guessing here, but it might have been down to the money.

Willing to take the risk for a 10 episode show, but not pony up the cash for 24. They could have filled up the content, but it would have been a lot more expensive. Would they see a decent return on it?

Happy with what we did get, would have liked more.

Eh, sudden time skip happens in a bunch of Trigger animes. I kind of like it for the stark contrast in character growth.

I think it's probably halfsies, as Trigger's idiosincrasies are interesting in that regard.

From what I'm seeing, reception has been really good, so it's possible they might make more of it...

Watched it all

Its not bad - it is very over the top in places - especially the last episode where the battles just become completely silly

Ending is not bad

Bubble Gum Crisis did it better :0

Played through the game twice and just got done watching the anime. I really liked it.

It was cool to see in-game aspects in the anime and know what it was or where they were.

When I saw who D was fighting at the end I knew how it was going to definitely end. But rest assured, no one got anything on Scott Brown Realtors.

My only real issue, and it's minor, is the variety of cyberware they show being equipped on one person.
In the game it's not that customizable and just what I want to hear is more griping.

Edit: Also familiar with the RPG and the lore.

It was aight.. for an Anime I suppose. Kinda sappy love story in the end, and that whole last episode kinda ruined it for me but I suppose it could have been worse

So just like the video game then

So, a major part of cyberpunk as a setting/genre for me is the philosophical questions it raises and explores regarding consciousness, definitions of life etc. Does this show explore that at all?

The Laws of Thermodynamics:
1) You cannot win. 2) You cannot break even. 3) You cannot stop playing the game.

A bit - its quite superficial

It did remind me of the original RPG. The only bum note for me was the level of police fatalities. While gangs could be importing in fresh meat I doubt the police academies are churning out enough people to keep up with that level of attrition. Plus why didn't they run? Police, military, paramilitary are quite happy to run away from difficult situations.

Naw, the primary plot is the philosophical questions of going too far with steroids and what it is to live a good life, or live for someone else, and risk taking as a criminal heroes journey.

Watch it? The entire thing is shorter than the fellowship of the ring. You can watch it in a painting session

It is def better than the computer game

The NPC death count is a bit obscene and the colletral damage huge - the amount of "civlians" that would have died in the last episode (typical Animae super mad excess) and making all the bad guys come to a bad end is too forced. Considering that the main characters mother died in a drive by - some reference to the fact that he has possibily started many others down the same path would have been nice.
