How do!

So a common gripe about Heresy is how difficult it can be to find a rule your looking for. Some are in the main book, others in a Liber.

Does anyone know of a page guide type PDF made by the community? Not a crib sheet of what the rules actually say. Just where to find them (possibly even including reference to FAQs)

Automatically Appended Next Post:
If not, I may have a crack at making one.

I think Unit by Unit might be a decent format?

Yes, but much more in depth.

For instance, last night I was trying to find the Co-Axial rule. It’s not in the Ingredients page for the big rule book, but it is in there.

I spent an inordinate amount of time this morning trying to find what “Bombard” does.

I checked the rule book. No dice. Not even listed in the ingredients up the back. Eventually found it in Liber Astartes, tucked away. And of course for reasons unknown, the Libers don’t have any kind of ingredients.

I’ll set up my PC this weekend and give it a bash. Think I’ll go for a PDF Format.

Once the initial draft is done, I’ll share on Dakka. I’m expecting it’ll need a revision or three, as I’ll almost certainly miss something.

Alphabetical does sound the best way to go. Format akin to…

Vehicle Types

Bombard (Liber Astartes, Pp*whatever it is)

But with similar references for Liber Hereticus.

Once we’re confident I can make the file available through a drop box or something, and throw it up on social media.

And so I’m not getting anyone (myself in particular) in trouble, I won’t be saying what the rule does - just which book and page you can find that in.

However, I don’t have any other Libers, and I don’t currently intend to buy more. So community assistance on their entries will be very much appreciated!

Will also go over the FAQ PDF’s. If relevant, an entry would be akin to

Vehicle sub-types

Bombard Liber Astartes Pp69*, also FAQ V1.1 (maybe hot link to that FAQ. Depends how fancy I feel).

*not the page number, but spotted an opporchancity to be childish and took it, because I’m a child.

Please don’t except anything too fancy in the final format. I’m not a tech person. I’d love to have a cover page for easy indexing. But if that’s even half a faff, forget it! 😂😂

On a side note, I find it really hilarious how after years of complaining by cola-bottle thick rose glasses proponents of how USRs were sooo much better than 8th edition streamline and important stuff being actually in unit entries, GW returned USRs and we see plainly black on white that people telling how utterly gak, user-unfriendly and useless USRs were turned out to be 999% right, and that's with just three books to search them in, never mind something the size of 40K book collection

Who the hell thought gak that is only in one or two unit entries (which is vast majority of so called ""universal"" SRs) should be made into hide-and-seek game among the 1000+ pages? Frakking type it up in unit entry, there, done, or copy the way MTG does it, at least if you're a sane game designer and not just someone inept stuck mentally in 80s era gamesets

But never mind user unfriendliness, they are gak from game balance perspective too. Virtually all HH problems stem from one-size-hammer-fits-all USR uselessness - please, anyone tell me with a straight face damage stat from 8th is worse than cludgy Brutal(x) and rest of the ""universal"" weapon SRs that tries to ape the damage stat elegant simplicity wasting a lot of ink while turning some weapons and units into absolute must takes because these crude levers allow all or nothing. Who knew Ferrus could kill all other primarchs with ease because a single word turns his hammer into the best weapon in the setting? The actual HH lore might disagree here

Bscribes does help with that, having a few of the relevant rules tagged. But there is also wargear, which is essentially a universal special rule by a different name.

The only gripe I have about USR is that yes, they are sorta semi spread across different books. And sometimes they aren't in the book you'd expect, which can be annoying if you're in the midst of a game. Once you learn them it's easy enough, but there will always be one you're not familiar with. I only just learned about destructor yesterday, the stronger version of destroyer.

Eh. I do kind of wish Heresy went with the modern 40k unit listings. But USR are fine with me - if I can easily find what it actually means.

Which is the driving force behind this task I seem to have adopted, and which will almost certainly be a heftier labour than I’m currently expecting.

But hey, brings me Internet Points so there is a reward

No, GW in their divine incompetence simply made them hard to reference because they're split into a bunch of book sections with no logic and not even consistently alphabetized. The fault is 0% on the concept here and 100% on execution.

I'll agree that a few rules didn't need to be "universal" and just cause page flipping for the sake of page flipping when they could have just been in the unit entry, and there are nested rules like a piece of wargear that you spend 3 minutes searching for in the book only to be informed that it grants a different USR that you must now spend 3 minutes searching for.

Well I’ve been a busy boy today.

Sadly. It was busy sleeping and generally pottering around and watching movies.

Hopefully I’ll be energetic enough tomorrow to make a start.

Reckon I’ll do a single page, and try to settle on a format. That done, I’ll present the draft for critique. After all, there’s bugger all point in me doing this if all I produce is an incomprehensible document.

Dakka's Dive-In is the only place you'll hear what's really going on in the underhive. Sure, the amasec is more watery than a T'au boarding party but they can grill a mean groxburger. Just watch for the occasional ratling put through a window and you'll be alright.

polite request, please can you make it "printer friendly", i.e. no coloured backgrounds

there are some wonderful reference sheets out there that either look like rainbows or have some very aesthetically pleasing decorative backgrounds...

which render them unusable on a laser printer with just black toner :(

Oh I’d keep it simple. Bold, italics and underlines only, in a non-comic sans font.

Actually, maybe in comic sans, just for a bit of benign mischief.

At work we use Arial, size 11. Given we have strict rules on accessibility and after 10 years I’m really used to that format, I’ll probably stick with it,

But as ever, I only have the Big Book, Loyalist and Traitor Libers, with no particular plan or interest to pick up others. So it’ll definitely need the input of others.

I think we just have it as a single, alphabetised document, giving page refs for each volume, rather than a separate section per volume?

I really do need to crack on with this!

to be honest something in excel would be interesting, one rule per line - but include a column with the book, the page reference, section etc - sort & filter as seen fit.

pretty easy to then drop it out into a template document in whatever format

You greatly overestimate my technical competence.

No. Really. I’m useless at Excel. Wasn’t part of my formal education, and in the workplace i palm such tasks off on the Actually Competent, so I’ve never picked it up on the fly.

makes sense

as one of the ones such tasks do get palmed off on to I'd raise a flag as to not being competent either...

Right then.

Home office now all set up, so I have a proper space to sit down and make a start. I’ll give it a bash this weekend, so expect a sample draft for your consideration some time on Saturday.

In terms of finding what needs finding though, I think I’ll start by going through the Wargear lists in Liber Imperialis, alphabetising the Special Rules, then hunting them down across the books?

Shouldn’t be that much work, particularly how I plan to do it.

Going through the various weapons and unit entries will let me compile all mentions of USR.

That done, and alphabetised for ease of user reference, it’s go a-hunting. Bombard was a sod to find, but once found, there were the other, similar rules. So find one, find a bunch and it’s off to the races.

Whether I figure out how to internally hyperlink to each section (Vehicle USR, Weapon USR, Unit USR etc) it should become a doddle to navigate.
