Subject: Local Store GW Product Return Policy?

Well, this situation is sort of awkward. Some family members of mine spent a LOT of money to get me a gift this Christmas. I wanted Chaos Space Marines, but they got mixed up and got me the Space Marine 9th Codex and the combat patrol box with the Impulsor and the snipers. I know the store they got it from and I'm wondering if I will have any luck potentially trading them back to the store owner in 100% untouched condition to get the army stuff I require? I play at that store and I wanted Chaos to add to my daemons codex. I'm not sure the standard policy of this, it's not an official Games Workshop store. (Because I live out in Georgia), but I do attend events there.
If not, I am not sure if I should hold onto them and try Ebay or Amazon, (I've been screwed over in the past by these).
I could always go Alfa Legion...(But I want to play on a team we got going of heretics and xenos as there's a huge bloat of loyalist players, not to offend anyone but there are.)
The thought is what counts, but if I can trade what they got back to the store for what I want it would be good. They did get some lovely paints though!

Especially if its a store you play at, just ask them. It isn't really that awkward- if its unopened GW stuff and you want other stuff they have in stock, then a simple 'do you do gift exchanges?' is a straightforward thing.
I'll admit, it has been a long, long time since I went to a GW store, and a receipt always makes things easier (Some GW stores got wary of people buying from discounters then making returns for cash at full price, as paltry as that is to try to scam a few dollars- people so inclined can do better). But product for product (for the same dollar value), rather than cash, especially after the holidays, is in no way weird. 'My family bought the wrong thing' just isn't that unusual this time of year.

Yeah, I have left the gifts untouched since this morning. I don't think they have a receipt but my family have been very commonly seen in the store and I was at the gaming event earlier this year. I don't want cash back, just to get a new codex and boxset instead. If not I maybe out of luck and have to play with my group as 'closet loyalists' alpha legionnaires on the disorder team or something.

The only real answer any of us can give you is this:
*Talk to the store. Preferably whoever is actually in charge.

Been a while since I’ve done it, but GW always used to be really good for letting you return unopened product to exchange for something else of the same price (or paying the difference on something more expensive)

Perfectly fine. 27th December was traditionally known as "Hell Day" amongst GW staff due to the sheer volumes of returns and swaps they would deal with that day.

Officially?
Product sealed, receipt in hand? You can get a refund or a swap.
Unofficially?
If the product is sealed, then at this time of year Swaps are normally allowed. Not a refund, except maybe for Vouchers.
However this is based on 12 year old till monkey knowledge, in the U.K.

You're all ignoring the fact the OP is dealing with a FLGS, not a GW store.

If it's a local game shop, not a franchise, we'd not have any way of knowing their policies.
So, ask them politely.

Most lfgs aren't going to have a issue with you at least exchanging. They're not losing money doing it and they risk losing you as a customer by telling you no.

It's understandable that the situation is a bit awkward. Your best bet would be to check with the store owner about their return or exchange policy. Some stores may allow it, especially if the items are in untouched condition with the packaging intact. If that's not an option, you can explore online platforms, but be cautious as you've mentioned past issues. Alternatively, considering the thoughtful intent behind the gift, you might explore building a secondary Space Marine force or, as you mentioned, going for a different Chaos faction like Alpha Legion to diversify your army. It's a delicate balance between expressing your preferences and appreciating the gesture.
