With more DA lore coming out which will hopefully give us the full low down on the watchers in the dark, let’s see if your best guess is right?

My prediction is that they are some sort of experiment created by the necrontyr to combat the warp wielding old ones or a an early attempt at creating a warp sensitive warrior species like the eldar (created by the old ones). They could even be eldar souls that have escaped the warp to avoid being eaten by slaneesh and exist is some sort of pure warp energy form.

Oh I really hope they don’t. They are weird unknowable little things. Let’s leave them be and retain a bit of mystery.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

But sensibly wearing robes in case of water.

On. Serious note.

Likely native denizens to Caliban. We know Caliban was a Chaos infused Deathworld, which The Lion was able to organise a comprehensive cleansing of.

My guess is The Watchers are native to that planet, somehow immune or at least strongly resistant to Chaos.

But you can’t just be immune to chaos…. There are those who have genetic abnormalities that men’s they have no presence in the warp dimensions. And there are this who have the mental and emotional strength to resist the control of entities from the warp. But isn’t saying immune to chaos like saying immune to gravity?

The corrupting influence of Chaos and Chaos effects are two different things.
For example, Grey Knights and Custodes are incorruptible but can still be harmed or affected by Chaos sorcery.

It’s the temptations and mutations side of it.

Squats/Votann are highly resistant to the corruption of Chaos.

Not to say they’re entirely immune, because who truly is.

But strongly resistant to the baleful influence is definitely something that exists in the background.

I've not read the novel but one of them describes them as sort of of extra-dimensional entity existing outside of time and space with the watchers not being their true form.

The only part I liked in the whole Thousand Sons books, was the idea of tutelaries. These Lil guys might just be Caliban forest psychic spirit daemons, but classy, since they're wearing robes.

It feels like one of those thing that was put in the lore to add some mystery were there wasn't any to be honest.

Okay, I have no sources so I'm probably just spreading misinformation here, but...

I thought they were established to just be some sort of xenos with a particular dislike of chaos? Is that not the case?

ATTENTION
. Psychic tests are unfluffy. Your longing for AV is understandable but misguided. Your chapter doesn't need a separate codex. Doctrines should go away. Being a "troop" means nothing. This has been a cranky service announcement. You may now resume your regularly scheduled arguing.

IIRC, they would be cave spirits, rather than forest spirits...

Could be warp entities. There is room in the fluff for non-evil warp entities to exist, given it is manifest emotion and not all emotions are covered by Chaos very well.

I chose an avatar I feel best represents the quality of my post history.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

Perhaps the great forests of caliban had sentience created their own warp entities, there is loads of new evidence showing that trees and other plants communicate with each other across large root networks.

Although all the forests were destroyed so you would think the watchers would go aswell.

It's pretty explicit that whatever they are, they're anti-Chaos and wanted Caliban to be destroyed. They were first encountered fighting the Great Beasts. Perhaps they're not native?

That said, Caliban is shown to have an evil Chaotic sentience of its own, possibly stemming from the Old Ones sticking the world-serpent thing in there. Maybe it's akin to Fenris's world-spirit (which we have confirmation of from Wrath of Magnus).

If I had to guess, they're creations of the Old Ones who got a good look at what the new managers of the Warp look like and decided they didn't like it.

The thing about 40k is that no one person can grasp the fullness of it.

Warp manifestations of the Emperor's will made into beings... We know that the extreme order of the Emperor can project into the Warp and just like daemons are chaotic emotions made tangible, the opposite is true too
