Neutral no longer? They're from Asmodee Spain.

I think they will still be neutral as well as have their own faction. Much like how the Stormcrows have both Neutral cards and Targaryen cards. The redo for the cutthroats looks ace as do the archers, I still have yet to see the spearmen. Here a pic I found out on facebook for the archers.

If they do make the current units Bolton only you will hear much gnashing of teeth over everyone loosing the Flayed men Cavalry...which would be wonderful in my opinion.

I'd sure like to know what is in the core box for troops as I already have one of all the Bolton box except Blackguard.

The News and Rumors section is all about surprises. I'd certainly hate it if we got 100 posts saying "I know something you don't know..." - malfred

According to Frontline gaming the contents contain 2 bolton captains, so 2 units of the new cutthroats and a bolton flayer so one unit of blackguard unsure of the 4th infantry unit, but with 56 models (56-5 heroes-3captains=48infantry models).

The article also lists the expected heroes from the heroes box of boltons.

Probably the new archers or spearmen? Would make sense to throw one of the new units in there to incentivise existing collectors.

I suppose it could also be Bastard's Girls if they're recycling but I don't think those come with a attachment.

So are CMON updating / re-releasing all of their faction starter boxes for this? I've been on the fence about picking up the Baratheon starter for a while now (I like all the minis in the ASOIAF range, but perhaps those the most). But if there is going to be a new starter box at some point I might hold off on picking up the existing one.

I'd be surprised if they felt the need for a new Baratheon or Nights' Watch starter box; the Boltons were part of the original Kickstarter along with the Lannisters and Starks (who have since had their updates). Nice to see the Cutthroats get updated sculpts (at least they're no longer dwarfed by everyone around them). The rest of the Bolton stuff holds up pretty well alongside the later additions (which wasn't the case with most of the Starks in particular).

Good stuff, I know these have been pending for a while.

Also good job creating an ASOIAF thread, think it's a big enough game that it probably deserves its own thread rather than just being lumped into the CMON one (next to He-Man)

I hope it's okay to plug Baronofdice.com in this thread. He makes great custom dice for all the Factions (Including those not represented yet) in ASOIAF. I purchased the Sun Spear dice as I really dislike the ones that came with the Martell box. I'd order the Greyjoy one if I wasn't upset about the last update they received in game, But I have seen the Bolton dice from Baronofdice.com in person and they are great. I'd love if the pips and symbol were in Dark Blue though.

Can't wait for that Bolton box. I really like the Bolton sculpts already and these seem to go from strength to strength. I hope they become their own army instead of a neutral sub faction.

@Siygess I don't think there is much risk of a redone Baratheon starter anytime soon. You should go for it. The game is great and the Baratheon sculpts are very nice. The Queensmen and Kingsmen in particular are real standouts for me.

Glad the game is getting its own thread. Lots of reasons to be excited for the game.

Since they're still in brown plastic I doubt they'll stop the current models being Neutral, even if new ones are exclusively to committed House Bolton.

I wonder if the Freys will end up under the Bolton banner.

My understanding is that the Freys are the larger more important house, so maybe we will even see a Frey specific army?

But I can also see them being neutral since Walder is. I wish Walder was more viable in game...I keep on trying to make him work, but he just screws up tempo too bad to make him worth it.

I feel like this game just keeps releasing cool stuff and I'm seriously considering getting into it, as I love the books, the minis are great, and the gameplay looks pretty fun too. We also have a pretty good sized group that play at my LGS.

I'm really trying to cut down my miniature games though (not enough time to be frank), and deciding on which game I get into during the second half of the year for my third and final game is pretty tough.

Same boat for me. Out of all the rank/flank games that rose up when WHFB was killed, this is the one that I keep hovering over, so close to pulling the trigger.

The game is pretty cheap to get into by wargaming norms, if that helps. Most armies are built around buying the starter set and fleshing it out with 2-3 boxes.

If you've a local scene ask them for a demo game perhaps? In my experience people are pretty eager to see the community grow and will take you up on it.

Yeah, I should probably do that at some point. One of the guys in the group plays Alpha Strike with us occasionally and is a pretty cool guy, think I’ll ask him if he has some time to walk me through the game once I get through my insane May.

I also appreciate that it’s a Rank and Flank game that doesn’t seem to take 5-6 hours to play a game and only needs a 4x4.

You guys should totally give the game a try. I was hooked after my first game. It has so many interesting choices while playing. It is the best game I've played in the 20 odd years I've been war gaming, hands down.

I love that most factions have viable sub factions/flavors you can zero in on. Like I can make a decent Lannister combat face smasher list, even though the faction is more naturally a panic and control style faction. It keeps list building endlessly fresh and entertaining.

Agreed! Even for people like myself who never read any of the books. I was a bit upset by the last rules update not buffing Greyjoy, but every faction does have it’s strength and weaknesses, yet can still tailor fit to fight almost anyone else.

Yeah, the Greyjoys didn't get the buff they deserved in the latest update. They are still viable in games among friends, but will struggle in tournament settings against highly tuned lists.

I definitely thought that the new Outflank on the Reaver Captain would really help them but it doesn't appear to have as large an impact as I thought it would initially.

That's some pretty high praise. Everyone I've talked to who plays it seems to really enjoy it, and after looking at the price of an army it looks very affordable for an army game, especially considering it is a rank and flank game.

It's pretty nice to hear that you can build a faction to play in a different way too. One of my favorite things about Alpha Strike is that you can build your army within your favorite faction to suit a variety of different playstyles, rather than being pigeon-holed into having to play one specific play style because are playing said faction. Sounds like that is pretty viable with most of the ASOIAF armies, and I really appreciate that.

It is really neat, if not for random charge ranges (totally unnecessary there) it would easily be 8/10 for me.

Note, though, that it has this pretty boardgame'y feel, as Eric Lang is generally a board game designer. As a result many mechanisms are elegant but strongly abstracted.

Fair points around the boardgamey feel. In my mind it combines the best of elegant board game design with the cinematic flair of rank and flank wargames. I've found that 3d terrain placed over the 2d templates really helps the aesthetic appeal.

Important to note that the charge distance is your units move, plus a d6. So it is random in the sense that charge distances are a distribution centered around your move+3.5, but there is some predictability around how far your units can charge.

It is abstracted, but much less abstracted than say Kings of War. You have individual wound removal, separate ratings for combat, armor, and morale, etc. So you can have units that run the range from lightly armored guys who are really good at killing things, but tend to run once they start taking damage (Bolton Cutthroats), to high armor but not particularly killy units like Lannister Guard, heavy Cav who hit really hard on the charge, but don't really want to stay in prolonged battle, and all around good at everything elites like Night's Watch Sworn Brothers.

I really enjoyed the mechanics when I played this game but something about it just didn't really stick. There's nothing inherently wrong with any of it and there's a lot of interesting systems, but I just don't find myself very compelled.

I think it just comes down to only seeing the game as mechanics and never getting out of that head space where I feel like some kind of drama is playing out on the story. I'm not entirely sure why its so different to other games, but I just really never get to feeling invested in the win conditions the way I do with games I really love.

CMON hosted a bit of a surprise webinar today for ASOIAF:
Here is the link: www.youtube.com/live/AUJccmV0j_0?feature=share

Big takeaways:
CMON is investing a lot in the game with language translations for the app for 5x languages, more prize support for flgs running events, a tournament circuit, a dedicated national championship, and many more releases.

The upcoming Bolton army will be a new mini army consisting of the starter, a box of heroes, and 3 other boxes. Boltons release slated for Q4 this year. They previewed very cool new Bolton sculpts.

There will be several more mini armies coming.

There is an incoming balance update to boost low performing commanders and changing some units. They previewed a couple of these changes on stream.

As part of balance update, there is a big glow up of the pillage mechanic for Greyjoys! There are now built in generic boosts for every pillage token, and unit specific special boosts.

Seeing Giant "Spear Throwers" for Free Folk, Umber Ravagers (Knights) for Stark, a neutral Heroes pack (auto buy for me, Sandor + Arya! don't know the rest in the box*), Stony Shore Pillagers for Greyjoy and I think some Baratheon Halberdiers on Facebook.

Work blocked so can't post pics.

I'm enjoying painting the Targaryen starter set, and have my first game next week!

Finding news on this game is a bit weird, coming from GW world where its all posted in one spot.

*Shae, and 2 commanders for Stormcrow mercenaries and a Nights Watch recruiter apparently.

I havent bought any ASOIAF minis in over a year, so I have some catching up to do. I collect (or collected since its been a while) Lannisters, Baratheons, Nuetrals and Some Stark (Tully, Mormont and Karstark.) I also pick up some random stuff I like (Like mother of Dragons).

I will get the New Bolton set and the New neutral heroes... The Boltons inspiring me to get back in to it. Thanks for the info and pictures... as I dont really get any other ASOIAF news except here.
