Hello Dakkanaughts!

I am about to start work on a small painting commission and will be trading work for printed Epic models. However I am at a loss as to what to get printed.

If someone could give me a basic Space Marine army list that would be great, preferably one compatible with 30K (using the NetEpic optional rules). I've never played before and want to try it out but I have no idea where to start. I have found some free STL files for most of what I think I need, going by the army book available on the NetEpic website but I don't know what I should tell the guy to print! As far as Legions go, I was thinking Raven Guard, since well... that's what my HH Legion is.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers!

What optional rules would those be?

NetEpic, ie. 2nd edition's (Space Marine) descendant, doesn't have those as far as I'm aware (except for Imperious Dominatus, which is a different game but made by the same people who steered the NetEpic project for decades). NetEA, ie. 4th edition (Epic: Armageddon), has the Aussies' 30k project known as EpicAU. Maybe I'm wrong and there are NetEpic specific 30k rules, glad to see stuff on that side as well if so. @Pacific might help you out better with 2nd ed stuff.

Anyway, the basic gist doesn't really change. For legion marines, you want lots of tacticals, terminators, spartans, rhinos and thunderhawks. Depending on your system of choice, dreadnoughts and field artillery are either great or non-existent.

To get started, something like 20 bases of tacticals, 10 terminators, 2+ spartans, 10+ rhinos, 1-2 thunderhawks, couple of command squads, 4+ predators and some dreads would do nicely. Jetbikes and speeders are also good if you want to play more like traditional 40k marines and less like a slogging infantry legion.

Thanks for the reply.

In NETEpic Gold there is a small blurb about playing pre-Heresy armies and it gives a short list of acceptable units, that was what I was basing my question on.

Having another look I've discovered the rules for Armageddon and that looks to be the way to go. I did not look into EpicAU because it at first glance sounds like regional tournament rules but if it's got HH stuff then I guess I better have a look!

I've found the list builder for EA so that has been a great help along with the rulebook. I've managed to make a 2000pt list of Raven Guard, using the EA RG list and I think that will get me started.

Great - yes EpicAU is the way to go if you are doing Heresy or Pre-Heresy, the special rules are a lot better developed for that game than NetEpic (If you want the game mechanics of the latter, I would go with Imperialis Dominatus for that, which is essentially a development of NetEpic, but in the Heresy-era setting and covers most of the 28mm Heresy-era unit designations, there is a *lot* of detail in there)

EpicAU is pretty much just the same as NetEA and EpicUK are, ie. a set of army lists with a shared rulebook in Epic: Armageddon. AU is a very Heresy-focused area and their Epic scene isn't really an exception, but they have some philosophical differences in the list building compared to the more refined and widely tested traditions of NetEA and EpicUK. Good fun for sure, still.

In EpicAU legion context, my typical 4k Death Guard mechanised list for example would be something along the lines of:

2x 8 tacticals in Spartans, w. supreme commander and Hyperios AA
2x 4 terminators in Thunderhawks, w. chaplains
2x 1 Fellblade super-heavy tanks
1x 6 Rapier quad-mortars
2x 5 Contemptors w. double assault cannons or twin-las
1x 4 Predators

Enough tacticals and dreads to hold ground, a heavy air assault detachment, light artillery to disrupt enemies before decisive assaults, quick response flanker with Predators (or Sicarans, if there's points to spare) and a couple of Fellblades to bring some big guns to play.

Well, next week I'll get my hands on the first batch of prints.

Looking forward to it quite a bit. Having found the EpicAU wiki, I think I'll be going with that ruleset. Besides, works with Armyforge, haha!

So just for funsies this is the order I put in, and the stuff I'm getting later this week.

Ordered.

1 Captain, Chaplain and Librarian
20 Terminators
40 Tactical Marines
20 Assault Marines
20 Devastator Marines
6 Rhinos with outside treads
8 Bikes
2 Attack Bikes
10 Landspeeders
3 Drop Pods
1 Thunderhawk

Coming soon...
2 Boxnaughts
15 Tacticals
1 BP & CCW guy
1 old Rhino
1 outside treads Rhino
1 LR Achilles

It's pretty much all gonna be in MK3 except the Assault Marines I believe, they were in Mk4. Not so sure about RG now. I do already have a HH Raven Guard army in 28mm so...

Maybe Fists? Wolves?

Ack. I need to look at some lore.

Here is a 2000 point list, World Eaters maybe?
