I apologize in advance if this is on the wrong forum (if you could lead me towards the correct one, I'd greatly appreciate it).

So I've been trying to get into the game for a while now, and this Christmas I might finally have enough for a starter set (especially if they go on sale). I'm unsure, with 10th Edition just coming out, if I should get the 9th Edition Starter Box (Necrons VS Space Marines) or the new 10th Edition Starter Set (Tyranids VS Space Marines). I'm planning on having the Necrons as my main army, and I know someone that would like Space Marines (but I am not averse to playing Tyranids). Would I be losing anything by taking the 9th Edition Starter Box over the 10th Edition Starter Set? (Anything other than the army and scenery changes?)

The 9th Edition starter set has the wrong Core Rules, and none of the datasheets are usable. But the models work just fine!

However! All the rules except for Nids and Marines are available, for free, right now, from GW.

Find them here.

I repeat: Go to THIS LINK and download all the rules you can!

They will stop being free as the Codecs come out, so now is your best chance to get tons of rules that should be good for most all of 10th for free.

Are the datasheets online too? Would I just be able to find all the updated data online, or would it be a lot of differences that I can't just make up by researching after getting the 9th Edition Starter Box?

All the datasheets. All the rules. Everything you need for every army-except Marines and Nids.

9th edition rules are not compatible with 10th.

Versteckt in den Schatten deines Geistes.

The datasheets for Necrons, yes, those are online. In fact, everything except Tyranids and Space Marines have their datasheets online (though those will slowly vanish as each new Codex comes out). I would suggest grabbing what's there right now so you have them.

And if you want Necrons, then I'd avoid the current 10th starter box as you'll just end up with the rules you want and a bunch of minis you don't.

I would start by looking for job lots on eBay or Facebook buy/sell/swap pages. There are tons of things out there, and the Imperium Magazine has flooded the market with lots of Necron stuff as well.

From there look into GW's bigger bundles, and try to find a store with a good discount.

If you want necrons, go for the older set if its still around. On the plus side having older rules isn't necessarily a bad thing as with 10th stuff being free if you download now, you could play both editions depending on mood, friend group, etc (though most people will want to play what is current).

Just a note, since you mentioned sales - games workshop stuff doesn't go on sale - the best you get is discount boxes. Individual retailers can cut certain percentages off the retail price, so if you shop around you can find stuff cheaper, but actual sales don't really happen. On top of the model sources already noted, you can look into miniswap, and dakka has the swap shop forum. I don't know how active it is these days but there is also bartertown. Just note, sometimes it is more work cleaning up 2nd hand models than it is worth, so always take a look at the pictures of them so you know exactly what you are getting into. You can usually tell at a glance the really bad ones.

Tyranid index is still available...

...by the looks of it such things only disappear from the downloads section, but still available through their articles.

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.
