How do!

As we slowly, inexorably crawl toward the end of what for me has been an exhausting year, it’s time to start discussing what Geek Media we’re looking forward to in 2024. Could be movies, tv series, games. Anything geek media based.

Movies wise, I’m particularly hype for the new Ghostbusters film. I’m a fan of the overall franchise, to the point I now have a decent collection of the vintage Kenner toys. And I’ve enjoyed all the movies so far, and still like to rewatch The Real Ghostbusters of a Saturday Morning, because growing old is inevitable, but growing up is optional. And the trailers have definitely piqued my interest.

Also definitely seeing Furiosa.

Wait, those are both sequels. As are Deadpool 3, Joker 2, Beetlejuice 2 and Gladiator 2.

Hmm. Also looking forward to Dune part two, which isn’t a sequel really.

Mildly interested in Madame Web. Not a must-see just yet, but I’m open to it being decent.

Also definitely watching anything MCU and Star Wars.

But what about you?

My most anticipated movie is definitely Furiosa. Also really looking forward to Dune, Deadpool 3, and planet of the apes.

For TV I'm psyched to watch the rest of s2 of Invincible, The Boys (especially after how good Gen V was), and House of the Dragon. Not sure if we're getting more Strange New Worlds or Lower Decks in the new year what with the strikes and all, but I'll be watching those too if they drop.

I look forward to the new Godzilla sequel, Deadpool sequel, Fury Road sequel…probably some other sequel or two.

I’m also looking forward to seeing what new films come out, although they aren’t hyped enough for me to be aware of them yet. I suppose Dream Scenario and The Boy and the Heron will hit streaming next year, so those.

On TV, we’re still finishing DS9. Next year we might see Picard S3 and Lower Decks. And probably check out any MCU series or Andor second season.

I'd forgotten Deadpool and Godzilla were coming next year. Probably when I'll get around to seeing Minus One too. New Lower Decks will be great. Looking forward to Deadpool.

I'm hoping for the next book in the Ripple System series. Clunky as litrpgs are as a genre, that one I like and the quality of it has generally improved with each book. Hope the trend continues.

In no particular order:

Dune Part 2
Deadpool 3
Godzilla x Kong Rise of the New Kingdom of the Empire
Lower Decks
Strange New Worlds

Lots of smaller films I can't think of off the top of my head, like Love Lies Bleeding.

ORKS codex!! WAAAGGH!!!

Movies: Deadpool 3, Joker 2, 'Zilla X Kong, Sonic 3.
There seem to be a lot of those "Sequel to 10+ years old movie" coming out and Ghostbusters: Afterlife kinda burned me on that one. Whilst it stayed original and was WAY better than the "all female SNL cast" one, it didn't add anything new (Other than JK Simmons as Evo Shandor- JK is always a win. Always.). So- I've very hesitant about any sequels to older movies that stand on their own (IE Beetlejuice, Gladiator, Twister).

Given the current prices and whatnot of GW, I'm neutral on any new releases. It'd have to be VERY exciting for me to preorder and wait till it's not in stock, complain I preordered, then get it 6 months later. So, anything short of allowing Orks to run an official Krork model.

They’re making a sequel to Twister?

I hope they use the tagline “This time it’s personal”.

And then have the main characters followed across an ocean by a voodoo twister, whereupon it has an affair with Michael Caine.

Yeah it seems like every movie these days is either a sequel/prequel, a remake, or a franchise movie (e.g. MCU, Star Wars), or some combination of the above. Hollywood does appear to be at least temporarily out of ideas for new stuff. As for what I'm looking forward to in 2024, I have a few things:

Movies/TV:
Whatever MCU movie there is. So far despite a few stumbles recently the MCU is still pretty fun.
Any MCU/Star Wars TV shows on Disney+. I've enjoyed basically all of them, even the ones that were less good.
Dune Part 2. Been waiting long enough, it better damn well be amazing. The first one was so I'm optimistic.
Furiosa. Not really a prequel I would have asked for, but Furiosa was an interesting character in Fury Road so I'll probably go see this.
Godzilla. So far all of the recent American Godzilla movies have been pretty good, so I'm looking forward to this one.
Planet of the Apes. Probably the movie I'm looking forward to the most. We're finally going to see something more like the original, with smart apes and animalistic humans. Will 100% go to the theater for this.
Halo Season 2. No, wait, hear me out! It's probably a forlorn hope, but I'm hoping the showrunners might have listened to fans' gripes with the first season and we'll finally get a good live-action show, preferably with more Spartans kicking Covenant ass and less personal drama.

Wargaming:
New Dark Angels. If the rumors are true, we're getting one of those army set boxes with a bunch of new Deathwing in it (including the previewed Knights). As a long-time Dark Angels fan, I'm very excited. My wallet, much less so.
AoS 4th edition. We all know it's probably coming this summer. I haven't yet had a chance to play any AoS despite owning a pretty decent sized Stormcast Eternals army, but I always enjoy seeing the new stuff for it and I do want to start playing.

Video Games:
Space Marine 2. I'm currently playing through the first one for the first time, and I'm really enjoying it. I think I'll enjoy chopping Tyranids into bits even more, although most likely I won't have the hardware to actually run the game (I don't own a PS5/Xbox Series S/X, and my PC definitely doesn't have the grunt). I still want to see it, even if I'm just watching others play it.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

On sequelitis?

Our collective posts show it’s absolutely real. But, I guess a sequel/series continuation is easier to notice than “also we’ve this actual original movie coming up, not based on a book or a previous movie”.

Horror is a genre usually good for some kind of originality. And being such a cheap to make genre, I’m hopeful we’ll get a breakthrough movie or three to sate our lust for spooks and scares and that. But because many of such are made and funded independently, we don’t tend to hear much in mainstream nerd media until a bigger studio decides to drop a few million on promotion for something they picked up the rights to for a song.

Dune 2, Furiosa, Planet of the Apes, Season 2 of House of the Dragon, maaaaybe season 3 of Industry (its a bit tension-porn, but end of season 2 was a wild twist).

Any decent Horror movie.

Also morbidly curious of how Disney fares next year, good or bad. Any sort of course correction on their MCU and Star Wars franchises will be interesting to see. Same with whatever DC is coming out with next year, if anything. I think the Colin Farrell led Penguin show is still in development with a planned 2024 release date.

I fear the recent strikes will make 2024 a bit of a barren wasteland for new stuff, at least for the first half of 2024.

Just saw a trailer for “Abigail”, which looks pretty fun. Though its wildly different material, the titular creepy kid could make a splash like M3GAN did a year ago. I’d post the trailer, but it felt like it was one of those trailers that reveals too much.

Just seen that Netflix are doing Three Body Problem, so looking forward to seeing how they deal with that. From the trailer looks like their having a good stab at even some of the weird stuff!

Loved the movie(which I don't think involves any of its characters in this) and most of Guy Richie's stuff, so looking forward to it.
