Subject: Question for British Dakkanauts re GI Joe Cartoon

How do!
Didn’t seem a question I could really slot into an existing thread, hence this one.
But, the GI Joe cartoon. Being born in 1980, I was there for the greats. And I still have vivid memories, and even DVD copies of the classics of that era.
GI Joe? Outside of a random compilation VHS my cousin had, I don’t recall the show being aired in the UK. Now, that being said, we never did have Satellite TV in our house, so it could’ve been on one of those channels.
I of course remember the most excellent toys, and had a reasonable collection.
But the show? Tell me I’m not going mad, and that at least you don’t recall it being aired.

I loved all the cartoons growing up in the 70s and 80s, but that doesn't ring a bell with me so I've never heard of it. I loved the cartoon dungeons and dragons and I believe a TV series I think was called the Flashing Blade, I could easily be wrong.
But my weekend staple was Glen Michael's Cartoon Cavalcade. Wow that's going back.

The general consensus is that it didn't air, but was around on video (including rebranded as Action Force):
(And Doc - you asked the same question a few years ago!)

I think we had a similar situation here in Oz - I don't recall ever seeing the cartoon on TV, although it was available on VHS. The toys were available, and quite popular apparently (Although I never had any of them myself), but never got the same level of attention as the likes of Transformers or He-man, or even M.A.S.K... probably because those all had their cartoons to push the toys.

Don't know about the UK, but it did air in the Netherlands.
Though being the nerd I was and still am, I was more into Dino-Riders. And He-Man and Thundercats.

In the UK, the toys were repackaged as 'Action Force' and there was a comic strip, in featured in the boys weekly comic 'Battle'. This was not a reprint of Marvel Comics stuff, but drawn by the local IPC Magazines artists with quite simplistic stories, although the way they handled the switch from Baron Ironblood to Cobra Commander and a later story with renegade Red Shadow soldiers wanting revenge on their former leader hinted at the writers wanting more nuance. It ended when the US manufacturers wanted to push the GI Joe brand in the UK - so Action Force (sold by Palitoy in the UK) was killed, and GI Joe toys started appearing.
So the fact that GI Joe sort existed as a 'local franchise' may be why the cartoon was not aired in the UK.
