Hello all,

After a long long pause, I decided to get back to the plastic cra-painting and modelling hobby, this time with Battletech, because who doesnt like big stompy robots.

After getting the Beginner Box and the A Game of Armored Combat Box, I decided to start painting the Draconis Combine part (the other one will be Federated Suns), and so, all of you will have to put up with me, my ramblings and my miniature slaughtering.

I gave away all my painting and modelling equipment many years ago, and this time Im trying the Army Painter warpaints fanatic range, as I heard good things about it, and so far Im quite happy with it.

So, first mini in the torture chamber, the Vindicator:

-Primer: Uniform Grey Primer Spray (No pic here, it just pased from plastic grey to matte grey)

-Base color: Dragon Red (Warning - This pic is retouched, as I made a terrible picture and the mini looked magenta instead, dont take the color too literally)

Then, Strong Tone Wash (diluted, two layers), to cover all the recesses, and mechs have a lot of them:

I think I might have overdone it tbh, but oh well, its been years, I need to get back on track.

Next step, apply Dragon Red to all the panels to clean the color.

And thats all for now, I plan to post on Mondays and try to keep a regular step by step log, both to show the evolution of the process and as a reference for me of the paintings and techniques used.

Thanks for checking it out, all feedback welcome

Hey, the journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step and all that jazz.

Great start! You are correct that stompy bots rule. Looking forward to your progress.

DCMS for the win. Glory to the Dragon and all that stuff.

Exactly right, who doesn’t like giant stompy robots? And better yet proper original Inner Sphere classics.

And red ones too!
All the boxes ticked for me. Looking forward to more.

Thanks theCrowe and youwashock!

[TL-DR Section]

After the wash, repainted the red with Dragon Red, after some trials with greys decided to paint the "inner areas" and weapons in black, and this will be the colour pattern of my made up offshoot Vega Legion unit, still unnamed:

I dont know if its just my phone camera, but the red color is not exactly that one, and it reflects too much light, is just a lightbox with a led bar, I guess Ill need to check proper pic tutorials.

Thanks a lot, all C&C welcome

[Grognard rambling section WARNING: Word Levels Critical]
Spoiler:

(Rocking chair creaks menacingly)

So, after clearing up the red after the wash, I needed to decide on the color pattern; Yep, I painted all red for later repaint parts in other colors,I just wanted to see the mini full red before.
To have a rough idea, I loaded the mech model from Thingiverse in Paint 3D, and then remained undecided and painted over the mini anyways.

The overall plan was mainly red with either grey or black details, weapons and somewhat the inner parts of the mech, the grey little part showed more the "Vega" character, but at the end I settled with black.

Im not quite happy with the pics so far, I guess my phone's camera is just bad, it gets too many reflections and the red is not exactly like this. If anyone has any suggestion, is more than welcome.

I wanted to make my own offshoot Legion of Vega unit, with a background round up-wait sit back down I didnt finish rambling

Still unnamed Kurita Legion of Vega unit sketch:

Spoiler:

-They are soldiers from Vega, who have been monitored and reported as still quite loyal to Kurita and with a semblance of willingness to fight.
-After some covert tests on the field, they are assigned to an extremely difficult/suicide mission.|
-The operation is all staged, and the recruit/recruits will inevitably lose, and fall unconscious as their assigned mechs are rigged.
-They are taken for recovery to an undisclosed medbay in the system, where they get a body scan.
-When awake and after recovery, they get a debriefing, where they are offered a chance to regain honor and truly serve the dragon again. Shall they accept, the Dragon guarantees coverage for life for their families, and their names exonerated so their relatives can live in honor.
-What they have to do, is die. They will commit seppuku, be declared officially dead and all their records closed.
-In their own seppuku ceremony, they will be wearing their assigned ceremonial vest, that is designed thanks to the body scan to only leave the blade penetrate in a really precise area of the abdomen where organ injury is minimal. The blade is also designed to not allow to enter a certain distance. They will be knocked unconscious (again) instead of their heads being cut.
-The funeral will be performed, with themselves present as the deceased. Their death is officially processed, families informed and recording of the military funeral sent, names cleaned and lifetime support for their families given, as promised.
-The recruits get a sterilization procedure, as the dead cannot bring life.
-When all is said and done, and the recruit is ready to join the unit, they are faced with a final decision - In the port there are actually two dropships: one with the red dragon and black background of the new unit, the other a regular dropship that can take them to a working facility somewhere in the rasalhage republic. They get these two options told by one of the agents of Funakoshi, the current top head of the unit.If they leave to Rasalhage, no consequences will fall on their families. This is all true, they have the option to remain dead and just disappear, with their families losing nothing. Funakoshi wants to be sure that all who join do so by their own will. No recruit has chosen to leave for Rasalhage so far.

-The recruits get karpa koi tattoos on their backs, and their true deaths represent the passing to the gate of the koi, where they become true dragons.

-The colour pattern is red with black details, as they recovered some of their honor, but its still tainted; so they resemble a Sword of Light, but not fully. Their honor will be fully restored on their true death, in which a full military funeral is performed.

Yes, Ive read Lone Wolf and Cub, why do you ask? Im sure this idea is totally original and no one ever thought of a Legion of the Dead before, right?

Next step, lights on the red and if I have time, lights on the black.

All opinions welcome, thanks for watching/reading

That's a cool bit of fluff. It's always good to have some sort of context for what we are doing. Mech still looking good. You have pretty good definition already, so if you are thinking of going back in for more highlights, I think it will really pop.

Absolute awsum lore you have there. Feels accurate to the setting, a lot more than other fanworks which sometimes come off as lame. You've done my favourite unit, Legion of Vega justice. Exalted.

Yes-Close To The Edge is the best song of all time and I'll virus bomb/PPC anyone who says otherwise

[TL-DR Section]

1st and 2nd light on the red, 3rd light still in progress

1st Light: 1:1 Dragon Red (WF) - Pure Red (WF)
2nd light: Pure Red (WF)

One day I will be able to make decent pictures, that day is still far on the horizon.

[Grognard rambling section]
Spoiler:

Rocking chair still rocking

So after finishing color blocking the red chassis, I was confronted with a decision: Do I go for cool lighting or warm lighting? Im used to do warm lighting on red (using oranges) but now that I have the cool red triad set, I felt that a cool red lighting would look nice.

So, I tried one type of light in one leg, and the other in the other, to see the difference. Although I liked the cool lighting, I liked more the warm option (it looks better in real lifew):

And I made an oopsie! For the warm light I used Lava Orange (WF), when I should have used Burning Ore (WF) , that is somewhat the equivalent of the old grognard days Blazing Orange (C) (Troll Slayer Orange (C) for the youngsters). Just got confused with the namings, I had my suspicions that it was too bright while I was applying it.Nothing that cannot be fixed.

So so far, both legs have been given the Burning Ore (WF) treatment. More to come!

Tried as well some methods to make better pictures, but quite not on it yet. Now Im using Adobe Lightroom in the phone instead of the regular camera, and is an improvement but I think I need to difuse a bit the light before making the pics.

Thanks for following, all feedback more than welcome, glory to the Coordinator.

Nice use of that double spoiler-sink keeping those critical Word levels from causing total shut down.

Nice bit of legion background too. No harm in leaning into the faction style.

I tried to make my own mercenary outfit background once and it got way out of hand without somehow really telling readers very much.

Looking good. The red is really going to be nice and rich. As far as the highlights go, the warm red is quite striking, but there's something good going on with the cool red, too. Difficult decision which one I like more. Not terribly helpful, I'm sure, but I think you will be good either way.

Thanks, theCrowe and youwashock!

theCrowe, thanks for the feedback, Im actually checking out the adventures of Smirking and I really like as well your drawing style in your sketchbook
youwashock, thanks, its always helpful to hear opinions, the warm one won as well as it gave more "Kurita" vibes, but cool lighting was good as well, maybe for different models.

[TL-DR Section]

3rd Light Burning Ore [WF]

Edge highlight Lava Orange [WF]

Diluted Red Tone Wash [WF] - 50% Wash 50% Wash Medium.
In the picture it cannot be seen, but there is a difference compared to the edge lighting. The wash unifies all the layers and makes them look more cohesive.

Normally after the wash I would redo the edge highlight, but I think with a model with so many panels it will be fine like this. So chassis is complete, although I will go back to it to paint some regimental stripes after painting the rest of the mini.

Thanks for following, all feedback welcome!

[Grognard rambling section]

Spoiler:

Not much to ramble, done the 3rd and then the edge lights on the model:

3rd Light Burning Ore [WF]

Edge highlight Lava Orange [WF]

And then, next step was to apply Diluted Red Tone Wash [WF] - (50% Wash 50% Wash Medium) to the whole chassis. This unifies the layers and tones down all the orange a bit.
Being honest, I used to do this with Baal Red (the wash, not the current contrast paint), and I was a bit concerned about what would happen using the WF wash, but hey, lets trust the process.
And I can say that Im very happy with the wash, and had nothing to be concerned about. Unfortunately the pictures are not really showing the effect:

As said in the TL DR section, I normally follow it up with a reapply of the edge highlight, but never painted a mini with so many panels and I have the intuition that it will be too much, as there will be too much orange again. This is just my impression though, maybe when I have more minis under my belt I can give it a try.

And about the pictures, I just ordered a couple cheap desk lamps to use a light source, and see if that helps, as obviously with the leds Ive got Im not getting anywhere. Oh look, at the end I did ramble!

Thanks for checking this out, all feedback welcome

Good stuff. I think you are good to leave it as it is. I applaud your taking the time to pick out all of those little armor plates. Very neat paintwork.

Thanks a lot youwashock and tzurk for the feedback! Yeah the new range of Battletech minis is really good, I love them as well.

Vindicator is ready for battle:

Black details: Matt Black [WF] - Deep Grey [WF] - Uniform Grey [WF]

Green canopy: Angel Green [WF] - Greenskin [WF]) - Wild Green [WF] and then the white point with Matt White [WF]

Antennae: Hairbrush bristles [WiFe]

Pics got a bit better, although lights are much more muted than in real life. I will probably paint some white regimental stripes, but I will wait until I have a Lance complete to do so:

And next on the table: the Commando from the AGOAC box. Did not have much time, so just base color, wash, and color blocking:

Thats all so far, all feedback welcome (except Davion shenanigans) and thanks for watching!

Wow, it's been a minute!

Well, life came by and decided I was having too much free time to paint, so I needed to deal with it instead; just managed to finish 2nd lighting in the Commando, and hopefully next week I can go at it again:

1st Light (its more of a midtone really): 1:1 Dragon Red (WF) - Pure Red (WF)
2nd light: Pure Red (WF)

Thanks for checking in!
