Hi all, this is question/request from someone who is a newcomer to epic and therefore doesn't have too much knowledge on all the different unit variants and their roles. I've got the box set, some rhinos, some Titanicus and Aeronautica stuff. But I don't have either of the new LI books yet, and now I'm feeling overwhelmed about all the tank variants released and to come.

My lone wargamer friend and I would like to get a proper combined arms battle going: titans, infantry, armor, air support, artillery. But I paint slowly, and life has its way of getting in the way, so I start trying to catch up with the new releases and honestly, I'm overwhelmed with all the baneblade/kratos/sicaran variants. I guess we're trying to get a nice variety of units on the table without falling into the trap of "oh, we don't have anti-titan for this side...oops."

Let me ask two variants of essentially the same question:
1. Is there a quick, one-stop resource/list of all the unit types, their variants, and their battlefield role (anti-tank, anti-infantry, anti-titan, etc.)?
2. Can someone recommend a swatch of units (current and forthcoming) that would cover a touches-all-bases combined arms force for SM and SA?

For me, classic units, like rhinos, land raiders, speeders, bikes, droppods are a given. But Termites? Sicaran Arcus? No idea if they're necessary/fun/whatever.

I grant you that a fair response is "get the books and read them." I'm begging your pardon in advance that GW's production moves faster than I paint/game, and I'm asking for your help to avoid things going out of stock before I get around to buying all the current and forthcoming books. After reading the base rulebook, it's clear to me my epic knowledge is sorely wanting. Many thanks in advance.

In terms of collecting, LI kits usually offer reasonable flexibility.

For instance, the Predator, Kratos and Sicaran kits come with enough turrets to build one of each variant. So game to game, you can change up your list. However that’s not universal

The infantry kits are a bit odd. They come with lots of different units, but outside your basic infantry, you don’t get that many. I’ve had a total of four Astartes Infantry, and that’s allowed me to max out the units that come in it.

You could do a lot worse than picking up the Battleforces. For someone starting out, you get a decent selection of more or less essential units, and at a reduced price.

Ah, that is useful to know. I see that now in your recent post in the "show it off" thread.

For assault/veletarii, ML, plasma, flamers, and terms, I'm hoping to bulk out the detachments by putting fewer models on the bases to get a few more out of each sprue. Meanwhile, I'm swimming in basic infantry.

Funny you mention the Battle Groups, because I just added them to my wishlist a day or two ago. They seem to be exactly what I need (apart from Land Raiders, etc.).

I’d say two Battleforces are going to land you a small but mostly functional army. Certainly if you’ve assets from Aeronautica and Titanicus to add in.

Also worth noting you’ve two options when fielding Leviathan Dreads. First as a unit in its own right, second as options to expand Contemptor Talons. Which is best? I honestly don’t know!

This is something I'm still grappling with: how much for a 6x4 table. Are you saying two Battle Groups for each Adeptus Astartes and Solar Auxilia? Or 1 of each?

Two per army. I would recommend more due to the savings, but the Kratos might get repetitive to the point of not being that usable.

You can then bulk out the other elements of the sets with the individual boxes, once you’ve got an idea of which tactics appeal to you and your chosen Legion.
