I am desperately trying to find an old source that desribed Cadians as basically being the 40k realm's version of Scandinavians. They were desribed as tall, blonde, and having blue or purple eyes. I know modern lore has shifted and it was decreed that all Cadians have purple eyes, but I swear that back in 4th edition there was a statement about Cadians that said that blue eyes were also typical.

For the life of me I cannot find it, but I see wikias that mention it.

Was it in an okder codex or main book, or even just the rulebook for Winter Assualt? Someone please help.

Earliest Cadian background would be in the 2nd Ed Imperial Guard Codex.

I’ve got my copy in the other room, so will have a quick refresh and report back.

A cursory bit of googling suggests 15 Hours and Cadian Honour have relevant references.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Nothing in 2nd Ed Codex. About the only info beyond “it planet, close to Eye of Terror, stable route, lots of chaos attacks” would be a mountain range being suffixed with Alps.

There was one weird passage in Cadian Blood where a Commissar weirds out the Whiteshields because he isn't white but that has been very smartly never ever picked up again.

The earliest reference might be Eisenhorn book 2: Malleus. That has a bit where they are on Cadia and was published prior to the global Eye of Terror campaign and Codex: Eye of Terror.

Mad props!

Chapter 12, Page 196 (of my digital version) "She had the typical pale, tight flesh and violet eyes of a Cadian."

Great find! I could swear that there was a section mentioning blonde hair and blue eyes as well. If I recall, I had just been getting into the hobby and saw the description.

Dad had punished my bro and I by making us watch history channel, and I wasn't quite fond of the implications of the Cadian description. It steered me towards Steel Legion, but of course Cadians were the ones sold in stores at the time.

Hmm, it is very possible there was something in White Dwarf. Unfortunately the Warhammer vault has stopped uploading old White Dwarfs and only got to the end of 3rd edition, and my collection of 3rd edition White Dwarfs is small currently. So I cannot check I'm afraid.

To be honest, Codex: Eye of Terror has a quote from Malleus which tipped me off!

Krieg! What a hole...

Cadian Blood, as mentioned, though it isn't clear if it's meant to display the lack of experience from the White Shield or not, given the other Cadians don't seem to care much for the Commissar's skin color. Different Kasr have different accents, after all, so different places having more or less variation in skin tone is not unexpected, it certainly didn't feel weird to me, anyway.

Of all Cadians, a Whiteshield would be exactly who you would expect to be less familiar with off-worlders like a Commissar.

Never trust wikis on their own. Check, then double-check.

The thing about 40k is that no one person can grasp the fullness of it.
