Colour me intrigued because 1) didn’t know pre-printed MDF was a thing and 2) those bunkers look deliciously 2nd edition 40k!! Hopefully there’s more like that in the campaign.

Whether this works or not will 100% depend on how well they hide / integrate the burnt edges. They stand out much worse on the blue bunker than the brownish one.

That said if its all 2nd ed inspired stuff I'm in.

it's the quiet ones you have to look out for. Their the ones that change the world, the loud ones just take the credit for it.

Yeah, the concept is cool, as is the shown bunker design... but the exposed edges really spoil the effect.

I don’t know - if they’re going for nostalgia I think the burnt edges might actually work for the overall effect! If you want proper 3D there are some great options if you have a printer (check out Dr Spork and AlexisGS on Cults3D), but for paying homage to the cardboard ruins with the white edges this is perfect

The big gaming centre local to me has one of those CNC + printer machines and the sets they put out are really cool. At the moment they're only doing WTC compliant L shape ruins plus some shipping crate scatter pieces, which is a shame, but the ability to slap whatever facade you want onto whatever shaped building you desire is quite a nifty feature.

interesting timing seeing as GW appear to have a similar product/technology in the new kill team box:

A few of the Infinity partner companies have been doing preprinted MDF for a while using UV resin ink, some of which are pretty incredible. First one was a small independant company I can't recall offhand and now Bandua, Mircoarts Studio and Warsenal all do them both officially for Infinity and also general terrain for other wargaming. Pre-printed MDF bases too, if you like MDF bases. More options from TTCombat are always welcome

Interesting Kickstarter! Will keep an eye out for it when it comes out and see what they have to offer there. Hopefully it's not just the bunkers, but even those are cool, easy terrain is always a big plus for me!

And those Kill Team walls are very interesting coming from GW. If they start to dable into printed MDF terrain that could be very sweet. Or maybe they'll go that way for big ticket items like starter box so they can offer some ready-to-use terrain without taking slots from minis.

I agree mostly. Looks ok with brown, but it's quite jarring with the blue.

IMHO the burned ends only work when it fits the color scheme, is an area that would be in Shadow, or is a bit that could be expected to be made of old steel or similar colored contrasting element.

Well this could work if they did like a medieval house with wood beams making the burned wood parts less obvious etc... as anything else it still looks MDF terrain to me so I pass.

there are some, not sure who makes them but Warlord are shifting them for WW2 buildings. and for most.. these laser burn edges are not a massive issue, yes on a light background they show up but on bricks, stones, roof tiles actually its not a huge problem. yes you can see them but they do not jump out

Conflix had two painted resin versions of the famous White Dwarf card bunker.

It looks like I could finally replace my much loved card bunkers with these.

For a bunch of people that paint models and paint large pieces of plastic terrain... painting a small section of mdf terrain is not hard.

Currently most played: Silent Death, Mars Code Aurora, Battletech and currently trying Warcrow and Infinity.

Im not sure if it's easy to match the colour and detail of the printed parts on the burned wood... which has no detail, needs PVA glue to seal the wood and then painting the details? By that point it defies the point and to be honest still an ugly version.

Looking at this as harkening back to 2nd edition terrain, I guess the burned edges aren't overall more jarring than the original terrain looked with printed it's card sheets paired with plain grey plastic Necromunda bulkheads.

Because you're paying extra for little reduction in prep time and then you have to match the paint. It's basically just them blasting the sheet of MDF with a coat of paint, which takes next to no time with an airbrush or even a can of spray paint. The GW ones, while still having the edge issue, look FAR better.

The edges are the part that sucks for MDF and will unfortunately continue to suck. I like TT Combat, and have a ton of their kits (a good chunk unassembled due to the edge issue) so wish them well. But this offering is not particularly impressive IMO. MDF terrain makers are in a rough spot, with 3d printers on the rise as are global shipping costs for what is a pretty dense product. I think decals/printed designs like GW's might be more viable than this. I also like ttcombat's resin widgets they sell to make the otherwise flat MDF pop.

I skimmed the thread before actually clicking on the link and I’ve got to say I don’t see what all the fuss is about regarding the laser cut lines. I was expecting something really ugly and jarring based on all the hand wringing, but they’ve actually done it quite neatly imo - it looks like part of the design. Whether you like the overall aesthetic is down to you but I think some posters are blowing it a bit out of proportion. For me personally it will all come down to cost and variety. If the two examples in the image are all that’s available and/or they are ‘priced for convenience’ then I’m unlikely to get involved.

Yeah, the edges still kinda ruin it.

But this has decent amount of actual 3d detail, and would probably look decent when smoothed with putty and painted. But the printed detail doesn't work for me, so I am not willing to pay extra for it. Having a cheaper version with plain surface would be nice.

The bunkers are alright, but the ruin with the stairs is much more interesting.
GWs terrain is as simple as it gets, not necessarily bad for a start but that depends on the pricing ... so it's probably not worth it.
I personally find the already mentioned Bandua, Mircoarts and Warsenal much more interesting.
As for the edges, I personally don't find them to stand out that much, especially behind the usually darker background of a gaming table. Also if you want to paint them up a little I don't think it's necessary to match the other colors, just give a quick brush with a closely matched one and you won't notice it anymore on the table.

That ruin looks great and with that grey paint scheme you could quickly drybrush the edges grey and it would look great.

The old White Dwarf stair ruin is compelling. If they also have a set that's a reference to the 40K 2e box corner ruins, I can see backing this.

That ruin is so great for oldhammer. I'll be getting it, mounting it on a base and adding some rocks etc.
The pre paint is a side note at this point, i just want the 2nd ed inspired kits.

Here's a thought. These are pretty cool overall, especially the ruins which could easily be elevated with a bit of drybrush. However, in a world where these exist...

..if one had a printer or a print shop, wouldn't they rather have a print? Maybe it would come down to the price?

I mean, even in a world where 3D printers exist, I'd rather have hard plastic. I have both filament and resin printers, and I have very, very little interest in printing terrain or vehicles because it's just too much hassle.

I suspect that even with the advent of 3D printing, MDF will continue to fill the niche it always has - for those who don't want to pay for the more expensive options, those who want collapsible terrain options, and now those who don't have a printer or don't want to mess about with trying to print terrain. Prepainted MDF, in particular, is an attractive option for those who want decent looking terrain with minimal work. And these, as much as I'm not personally a fan of the exposed edges, would look decent enough on the table.

Agreed! Options are always good, I don’t think one cancels out the other (well, they might for *individuals). I’ve been collating 2nd edition era stls for a while now, with a vague notion that one day I’ll own a decent filament printer AND have the time and space to use one ie when the kids eventually move out… but in the meantime I can get that nostalgia hit with these. I’m really excited for the kickstarter to begin so I can see what all else they have planned.

I'm going to watch and see. I need to noodle the cost around, see if the stretch goals add more in. I'm a bit disappointed by the number of ruined walls and the lack of a "just more walls" add-on. Maybe that'll come later in the campaign.
