How do!

So possibly because Forums are a relic of past age, and so are many of the Oldhammer Sad Old Git Society (SOGGIES SOGGIES SOGGIES, OI OI OI!), I’ve noticed that Oldhammer threads are doing pretty well at the moment, attracting Dewey Eyed, Knackered Back Old Boyz, and Fresh Faced, Wet Behind The Ears, Don’t Know They’re Born, What Do You Mean Jealous Of Their Youth Young’uns. And they’ve proven pretty convivial.

And it’s got me to thinking, given most if not all the old books will exist in PDF format somewhere on the big wide webs, that should a dedicated Oldhammer Exhibition Tournament be hosted, it may prove popular.

Now such a thing would take a lot of planning, so I’m sorry to say this isn’t me teasing a big reveal. I’ve tried to do teasing before, and let’s just say there’s a reason I’m single.

Ahem. Anyways.

Would you, Dear Dakkanaut, have any interest whatsoever in a currently entirely hypothetical Oldhammer Gaming Session somewhere? As you may have gathered from previous posts 2nd Ed would be my jam, but don’t let that limit your responses, as such events could be flexible.

Ah, splendid! It appears we have a true pioneer of the literary battlefield among us! One can only imagine the sheer audacity of employing tomes and volumes as your tactical arsenal. I daresay, while the rest of us mere mortals are busy wielding miniature soldiers and dice, you’ve chosen to engage in a most riveting duel of wits with the written word.

Pray tell, do you also consult the great works of Shakespeare for strategic insights, or perhaps rely on the wisdom of Dickens to navigate the treacherous waters of your imaginary campaigns? I can only assume that your next move involves a dramatic reading of “War and Peace” to rally your forces. Bravo! One can only hope that your opponents are equally equipped with their own libraries, lest they be utterly outmatched by your literary prowess.

Carry on, dear scholar of the battlefield! The world awaits your next chapter in this epic saga of bibliophilic warfare!

I have enough issues finding any games here, let alone older editions. But I would still show up to one.

The odds of it being close enough to attend are microscopic, but I’d show if it were.

I'd totally play any of the editions 2-5 again. I've still got my arsenal of books and blast templates. And if you want to go to 2nd, datafaxes, spell cards and sustained fire dice.

I'd be down for games of 2nd ed, 1st ed, as well as games of 1st edition Adeptus Titanicus and Space Marine. As long as modern models are allowed, that is..

Only problem is that I cannot see how to attend games IRL unless its done via Tabletop Simulator or similar. Finland is a long way from the UKs..

I wish VR/AR technology matured faster, so we could all play AR games in our living rooms.

If we're going to allude to books existing as PDFs, are certain virtual tabletops a possibility of these kinds of things as opposed to strictly being in-person?

EDIT: I do have some interest in playing games, but I have 3 young kids, and a bunch of other stuff going on, I really don't have much time to play in person much less travel and whatnot.

But I do wonder about taking something like the rules for building/constructing units from Rogue Trader and coming up with points costs for certain units/armies/etc. Or... like one thing I've been trying to do is catalogue "new" units that were introduced between 4th-8th edition and "retro-izing" them back into 2nd/4th edition kind of rules, but maybe still allowing 2nd edition style stat blocks where veterans are ACTUALLY better than regular troops, with better ws/bs/attacks or whatever to make them special.

I have a LOT of thoughts about it. If I actually had time I would have written my own custom edition and army lists/books by now.

You could get me for that prohammer ruleset that we have a thread for. Or for a 40K with HH2.0 rules. But actual, 3rd-7th Edition rules? Nah, I never was a fan even back in the day and still consider 8th+ despite its new flaws the superior framework.
Everything I know about 2nd comes from Dakka so I'm not qualified to say if I'd like it.

My own personal frame of reference is that I've played 3rd-5th edition, I have only read 2nd edition, still not really familiar with 6th-10th edition, and I haven't read any edition of HH rules so I dunno what those are, but I do have my own ideas about how to "make the game better" from my own perspective, like... better than the old days, different from what is happening now.
