Here is some really interesting data from the Great Wargaming Survey related to Game Preferences:

https://www.karwansaraypublishers.com/en-us/blogs/great-wargaming-survey-blog-wss-magazine/gws-2024-period-preferences?utm_source=pushowl&utm_medium=campaign&utm_campaign=2987671&pn_source=campaign&pn_source_id=2987671&subscriber_id=298103486

The key take-away is that the top 5 spots are pretty static year-over year.

1. WW2
2. Sci-Fi (Not GW)
3. Fantasy (Not GW)
4. 40K
5. Napoleonics

Of interest, the Age related results may also "de-bunk" some of the Greying the Hobby talk, with 21-30 being as common as some of the older demos. However, they tend to be more Sci-fi/Fantasy in focus rather than historical.

It is also interesting that age is a bigger driver of game preference, with almost 70% of all Colonial or Horse and Musket interest coming from 51 years or older. No surprise here, but location also plays a factor in preferences.

Anyway, some interesting data that I recommend you check out for yourself. What take-aways do you see?

I can only speculate that British and European gamers are responsible for the high placement of Napoleonic games. That era does nothing for me or most American gamers I know, other than a couple of gamer grandparents who still paint with enamels.

I’m glad to see GW isn’t dominating the top spot.

I think the main thing that survey confirms is that GW gamers don't fill it in...

Yeah, GW gamers don't typically engage in the wider wargaming hobby. I mean, if you are buying Wargame, Soldier and Strategy magazine you are invested in the larger hobby of wargaming than just GW games.

@Bob- I think you are right about Napoleonic being a older, European thing.

Interesting, when you look at the by region section, you also see a huge spike on American Civil War in the US! Quelle Surprise!
