Hello and welcome!

This will serve as a space where I document an almost certainly lengthy process of building and painting my take on the previously redacted II & XI Legiones Astartes, or in this case, Legiones Obliterus. Thanks for stopping by!

Disclaimers: This sort of non-canon project is definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but its something I've had in mind for years now and finally feel ready to begin. My hope is that everyone can enjoy the hobby in their own way and that if you're here and reading this that you get some measure of entertainment or value out of it. For my part, I look forward to hearing your thoughts and letting my vision for these characters and armies evolve with the process. Additionally, while I don't intend to infringe on anyone's existing works, I have certainly been inspired by and appreciative of similar projects including but not limited to: The Lightning Bearers, The Dawn Legion, The Wardens of Light, The Halcyon Wardens, and so many others. As it's been a good while since I last saw any major projects aimed at getting custom legions actually on the table and out of lore pages, I hope you will allow me this little vanity project which should remain distinct from existing ideas even if they share common ancestry.

Project Scope: For the purposes of this thread, I plan to begin by fleshing out and getting test minis painted for the two legions lost to canon while filling some cultural holes the existing legions have left. The II Legion will therefore have an East-Asian influence drawing from Japanese, Korean, and Chinese history while remaining apart from the Mongol nature of the White Scars. The XI Legion is intended to follow another common trope with a Mesoamerican theme utilizing Aztec, Mayan, Inca, American First Nations, and other indigenous cultures as a base. I love the idea of slowly building out these two armies both physically and in concept, seeing how they fit within existing canon as well as a potential alternate heresy timeline in which the consequences of all twenty legions being present through the end of the Great Crusade can be explored.

Best to get right into it!

To get started, we have a tactical sergeant of the II Legion, displaying a bit more decorative features from the helmet to the alternate vexilla mounted on the backpack. Tomoe symbolism on the knee pad is accompanied by an oni mask symbol on the right shoulder pad to denote prior service among the Haken shock-troops of the legion before his current squad command. Note the period-accurate Mk. II armor and the not-so-accurate prototype Tigrus-pattern bolter.

Small beginnings, but I'm happy to get this going. Let me know your thoughts and if you have any homebrew legion or chapter projects of your own! It would be great to swap ideas and see how it all fits together.

Good luck with the project! The idea of taking those legions and doing your own thing is absolutely in line to what this hobby should be about, exploring creativity, so you are doing it right! Looking forward to see how you develop the aesthetics and the lore.

Interesting idea, I’ve always been curious to know what happened to the two legions. It will be good to see your take on what’s they could have been!

Thanks All for the kinds words and for your interest! I'm really happy with the process so far.

Here's the rest of the squad assembled, pretty bare-bones except for legion symbols and numbers on the armor. My thinking here is that since the IInd Primarch was discovered shortly after Horus and Russ early in the Great Crusade, these are probably Terran legionaries in their first few decades of adjusting to their gene-father's culture and identity. Hence, I'm calling these guys squad 'Kessoku' for now as a play on their probable participation in the latter stages of the Unification Wars. I'll get some paint on them in the next few days and see if the color scheme I have in mind comes together nicely as a squad or needs some revision.

Not a miniature today, but thought I'd share a quick edit that puts the II Legion in a broader perspective. An easy game of Eye-Spy which indicates relative proximity to Terra and, interestingly enough, the intergalactic void.
Since the IInd Primarch is confirmed to be discovered in 821.M30, I'm working under the assumption that the same expeditionary fleets that discovered Cthonia and Horus Lupercal continue on to reunite with the IInd.

Slow progress these past two weeks as work and life are always on hand to keep one busy, but hopefully meaning more hobby funds on the horizon

Assembly of a few characters for the II Legion is going well and I'm excited to share a bit of progress hopefully this weekend. In the meantime and since this is a hobby blog, I figured I would include photographic evidence of my latest other project that has been occupying my time as I chip away at the gray pile of shame:

Since it's stated that the Emperor was personally responsible for ordering the erasure of the II and XI Legions, we'll call this tangentially related to the main topic of this thread. I wouldn't be surprised if Prospero wasn't Valdor's first campaign of that nature, let's just say...
