I just pre-ordered the Custodes box and book.

What else do I need to play?

Dice, main rulebook, measuring tools, counters for statuses, and about 1900 more points of stuff.

Joking aside, you should be good if you're only running Custodes unless you want the scenarios in the Journals.

Core Rulebook, Status Counters... and a lot more models...

Its why I've never bothered with HH for now.. One day when I have enough LI models assembled, I might give it a go in epic scale, but in 28mil? Fuggetabuutit.

3000 points? Yeesh.

Is there a smaller version of HH, like a Combat Patrol or Spearhead?

There is Zone Mortalis, which doesnt allow large vehicles/monsters. IIRC its points value defaults are much more reasonable.

Also, guess you could play 1500pts if your opponent allows it and escalate from there little by little.. The saving grace of HH is, playerbase is a bit older and probably more open to a little finagling as long as the narrative aspect is respected enough..

3000 is only the standard for events so people get to use big toys.

Nobody is expecting someone to magic up 3k points just to play pick up games.

HH1 and HH2 are completely playable from 1k up. The Delegatus Consul literally got invented so people could take Rites of War for small games.

Can I play with these Custodes in the older editions?

Yes. In fact the new book that just dropped removed a bunch of older stuff, but it adds nothing, just refreshes. So your collection so far will be 100% backwards compatible.

And as others said, 3000 is the standard format, but people play all manner of points levels, both much more and much less than 3000.
