Haha that's alot of hours right there.
Whats inside the middle building ? storage and such ?
It's the castle's keep, what kind of castle doesn't have a keep?
My outer wall towers are for bulk storage of basic resources, wood, stone, dirt, and gunpowder (don't want that stored downstairs from my living room). The first floor of the keep will be where the entrance to my mine and farms will be. I'll also store refined ores, construction materials, and specialized materials inside the keep. I'll have my main crafting area down there too. I'll move all eight of my current furnaces inside as well as building another eight.
My second level will start the residential area, sleeping quarters, bathes, that sort of thing. I'll probably extend one or two of the towers up pretty high so that it looks a bit more like Cinderella's castle (for my little girl). I'll see if I can do anything with different color wools to make banners.
Yeah, it's a lot of man hours but hours at the computer playing games are pretty much the same so I don't feel like I've wasted any more time doing this than if I'd spent them playing WoW, CoD, or just watching TV. Actually I think this is a bit more productive than just watching TV personally. Course this also the reason I've done this on single player. Last thing I want to do is expend all this time and effort and then have some griefer come along and feth it all up.

Sounds like you're gonig to have fun building hte rest of it Tyyr, I look forward to seeing updates.
Still working on my underground lair, I'm now at the stage where all I need is a tree farm and a cactus farm (which is optional really) be completely self sufficient. I reckon I could do with a couple more guard towers too. The one I've got looks a little lonely since it's the only thing aside from my entrance above ground.
Still working on gathering the cobblestone and coal needed to make my concrete bunker and cannon system-- a hardened artillery post so to speak, WWII style.
For now, just enjoying a good philly cheese steak sub.

Have your tnt fall into water. With water, it won't damage blocks but will still do damage to nearby mobs (and you) and have the explosive force necessary to launch objects.

Search for Minecraft cannon on youtube or the minecraft forum. Plenty of good designs there that function like cannons. They don't exactly look like them though.

It's possible to make a lighter cannon which looks like a cannon, albeit a rather tall one. Your cannon needs a minimum 1x2x2 opening in order to work, that is, one wide, two high, two deep looking in from the opening. That would require two blocks of tnt, one as gunpowder to launch the second one, but you wouldn't get much distance.
Alternatively you could make it out of obsidian, but that would probably require invedit as it'd be too much work otherwise.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Also, is anyone else getting that they cannot connect to minecraft.net?

Oh. I thought that was just an aesthetic change, because it changed to the new downloader whenever I downloaded the latest patch.

Hrm. Now to see if I want to find a plains or desert biome, or if I just want to get rid of the mountains biome I'm currently in. I mean that would be a lot of work as thre's a TON of hills/mountains here and not much flat land, yet dunno if I'[ll actually find anythign (And besides, then I might ne er find my home base again).

Take a bunch of cobble stone and torches and build a line of columns after you.
Keep is about 75% done now. I just have to figure out what kind of roof I want to do. The options are a stair roof. Making the roof out of stairs has the benefit of letting in natural sunlight (stairs are transparent) and giving the roof a nicely textured look. Probably go with regular wood for that if I do it. Or I can do half stone slabs which will have a shallow pitch and a nice look but will make it hard to put in a skylight. Finally I can just go with a flat top, but that seems kind of boring. While I like the stairs and their natural light, given the span of the roof I think half stone slabs make the most sense, thoughts?
Cool build, btw what is the inside like.
Are the rooms that big too?
I saw a guy who build a gaint Hyrule Castle but it was really small inside and just built up alot.
Right now the inside is hollow. It's pretty big. I'm trying to get the outer walls and roof all done before I start to divide up the interior. You can see the doors at the front of the keep, that's a pair of regular wooden doors so you can see the scale of the thing.

Could also use the compass if it's near the spawn point. Or just the torches themselves, no need to really drag stone with you if you place them right.
Castle looks great Tyyr.

I probably ought to look into building something like that castle, I've got two large chests full of the stuff and I've only exhausted about 10% (if that) of my mine so there's a lot more cobble to come. Still thanks to my latest additions to my base I am now completely self sufficient.
Here's a few shots of the new stuff:
Cactus farm:
Tree farm:
Mob grinder output (still needs to be spider proofed):
And finally a couple of overall views and a cartograph image:
Everything looks ok so far (at least in my opinion ) however I'm really not happy with the entrance I can't help but think that a base as grand as this should have an entrance more appealing than a door in the side of a hill.
Not great is it? Oh well I guess I need to have a think about a new entrance hall. A spiral stair case would add a little class but aside from that I'm not sure what I want.
