Would a space marine techmarine with a full servo harness, a sm bike, frag grenades and a close combat weapon (replace bolter) make a good assault unit?

It costs 132 points and has two wounds.
Can move 12" or 24" (boosted) and assaults 6".
Has a 2+ sv, which can be invulnerable when boosting.
Has 5 attacks (6 on the charge), all ingore armor saves and two are p-fists
Can fire both a twin-linked plasma pistol and a flamer on the same turn.

Oh and he's an independent character so he can join another bike unit too.

Throw in a teleport homer for 5 more points and your termies will land right in the action.

I checked the points and he comes out cheaper than using an hq character similarly equipped (artificer armor, p-fist, p-weapon, p-pistol) and has more attacks.

He could get a 2nd turn assault without a problem (24" boost + 12" move+ 6" assault). He would do well against sm squads not equipped with power weapons, like devastators, scouts, or las-plas squads.

Well it's questionable on the legality (not by the RAW) but IRL in game shops and tournaments, but yes even without the full harness and just Artificer Armor and a bolt pistol, he's a CC monster. And if you can use the full harness on a bike w/o any worries, then yes he's even better. He works best when you throw out a ton of fast dangerous targets all at once, like a few squads of Assault Marines, some Tornados, etc.

@ Voodoo boyz what is IRL?

As to the legality, what would be the problem? It counts as artificier armor. It is not like equipping a character w/ terminator armor and then putting him on a bike.

Yeah, he'd need some other fast movers to back him up.

As a side note he'd be an excellent modelling project.... he'd be a part of the bike some sort of machine-man hybrid. perfect for a techmarine.

Well, it depends on how much stock you put in that Pete Haines FAQ from 1-2(?) years ago. In it it was stated that taking a full servo harness and a bike was not allowed. However, that's not an official ruling.

Basically, if your opponent read that FAQ... be prepared for a hissy fit.

IRL = In Real Life.

In 3rd Ed it was illegal to have a full harness and be on a Bike.  It's not in the 4th ed codex, but it is in the Unofficial Pete Haines FAQ on the GW site.  As such I can see a tournament organizer or GW Red shirt ruling against you should your opponent throw a hissy fit about it.

I know personally I'd allow it, but most of my gaming buddies won't so I don't use the combo.  Shame that's the way it is since it's pretty explicit in the fact that he should be allowed to take that combo but that's the way it is.

Anyone have a link for that faq? I can't find it on either the US or UK websites. If it is unofficial...

I didn't know there was something like a servo-harness in the 3rd edition.
and I have problem imagining a full armord Techmarine sitting on a bike. I mean he's already totaly overloaded but still manages to look damn cool. and rulewise...he would undoubtetly rock

I would totally do it, just so I could make a techmarine riding a mech contraption.

Thoughts of converting a sentinel dizzy me.

It's (The Pete Haines demi-FAQ) in GW's official forum.

Here's a link

It's one of the sticky topics.

However forums aren't at official. Unless it's published as an official faq its not a rule.

And that alone is enough to warrant building the guy. I'd suggest making two versions, only if you have the resources of course. One with the fully integrated bike-hybrid, and one as the standard un-mounted one.

Conversions can be their own reward, there is no need to actually use him if the figure is cool enough. Bring both with you when you play and if your opponent objects simply swap out the footslogger.

Oh, and we want pics in the modelling forum when you're done!

I think there was a errata that he can't take a Servoarm when using a jetpack. and it would be in common sense

Same one I linked to about 3-4 posts above.

What about a Tech-marine with Sero-harness on bike for ravenwing? Because everyone must ride and the codex says he can buy additonal wargear from the armory. He comes out point-wise like a Chappy on bike.

Would he be a scoring unit?

If the techmarine does not have any servitors, then no he is not and will never be a scoring unit.
