My GW guy is a nice person but a store rule is that all players must have their own Rulebook, Codex, Dice and Templates plus all their models undercoated unless they have just been purchased. I always think they are trying to flog this to you unsuspectingly.
A personal story is when I came two get a TAGK w/ Psycannon (for conversion to Inquisitor Lord) and a different GW guy came and told me I needed the (then) new FW GK Redeemer for £60 so he can 'survive the run into battle'. WTF???!!!

Not my story, but on a different thread, someone wrote of when they were going to make a $300-400 USD purchase of 40k stuff, and as they went to the counter, the GW employee pestered him asking "do you play LoTR?" He explained that he had no interest, and as he was checking out, the clerk swiped the LoTR "Battalion/battleforfce" box, saying "you should try it out". After telling a nearby mother to cover her child's ears, harsh words starting with F were exchanged, along with walking out empty handed.

yeah I gathered that Ive worked as a salesmen my entire adult life and I assure you ive never seen anyone fired over a customers complaint it just annoys the hell out of me to see so many spineless little know it alls acting like they got a set
I've certainly seen people fired over customer complaints.
What I've never seen is a quota-based salesperson trying to flog a couple extra dollars worth of stuff on a fourteen year-old only to have the lights go dim, "Eye of the Tiger" start playing in the background, and the kid come up with an epic line that leaves said salesperson absolutely gobsmacked, humbled, weeping blood, and begging the child to forgive him for his folly, as half these posts suggest happened.
Nor, for the record, have I ever seen such a thing involving an adult. Generally speaking, people politely simper and go, "Nah, thanks."
That's a frakking awesome mental image! Also for the record, I am an adult, not a wee 'un. And trust me, when you've had half an hour of politely saying, "no thanks" to the pushiest salesman in the universe about the same things that he just really, really wants you to buy (for your own good of course, no-ones life is complete without 5 canis wolfborn figures, and the space wolf army to go with them...), come up with something to say to shut them up. Now, I've known this guy for about, oh, eight or nine years, so it wasn't a totally serious threat to never come back, but I did point out to him that the FLGS across town had started giving me a discount on all the GW I bought there, and that I'd be more than happy to receive discounts as well as not getting pushy staff pushing me, at which point he was snapped out of his canis-wolfborn-reverie and sold me my frickin' space hulks.
The irony of this story is that I did end up getting a space wolf army, when I wasn't being pressured into it. It's amazing how off-putting a pushy sales-rep can be.

Sadly, my local GW never did this, not even once. I played at the Block at Orange a couple years back, and some of the horror stories on here are terrible.
However, recently there's a new guy who's taken over the management, so I'm a tad loathe to return...

Horrific Howling Banshee

So, ive been reading alot of these stories, and im kinda ashamed to be a gamer. Both from sales and customer standpoint, See i have been selling GW and other Wargames and Hobby items for a few years now....and ive been around to mutiple stores in my area, and whatnot and i go to say i have never seen half as bad or even close to near as bad comments as i have on this thread. It makes me think either they are made up, or that some of you really ran into some really braindead people. however i do think a few of you are highly overreacting to salesfolks. Most of the time, they dont know you, know what you have, know what you know, or even have an inkling if you know more about the game then most other people who walk in the door cause they saw a cool "Army dude picture"
So if they are asking you questions try to remember unless you been a customer of theres for a very long time, they may not know what you are thinking
As a sales person a buddy of mine is walking into Playing IG now....he has played SM for years and now he wants to start a new IG army, i know the best ways for him to get what he wants the cheapest and easiest, including conversions, and he listens to a majority of what i say with a grain of salt, then bounces other ideas off of me "for instance He wishes to grab some IG Battalions....to bulk his forces up, but when i asked him his concept for this army, he isnt lookin into getting or useing Weapon squads or Sentinals.....so it would be better for him to just get his command squads and troopers serperatly...
So yeah, sometimes the Salesmen really is trying to just help ya all out =/
(however trying to sell 5 canis's to make Thunderwolves was done online and is a good idea, just cost effective? no frackin way....that was just a horrible way to try and offload some bad model choices on a old customer...)
