I've always assumed either its mass transportation with no personal transport execpt for those higher up, such as huge trains or even buses.

Utility wise i've read mention of trucks and other cargo loader like machines.

I personally built a Dragon Wagon from a Battle Wagon with all manner of parts on it.
simple idea being it used to be used on the planet to salvage wrecks and other valuble things that the citizens could use, and the 'Wagon itself was built out of nessecity for that job.

As for Mechanicus transportation I would imagine anythign they fancy on building would do.

to answer your quesiton yes the sig is the Apocolypse Tank from Red Alert 3. i wanted a baneblade but couldn't find picture small enough. An Apoc Tank would make a very cool Super heavy though

edit: the Dragon Wagon has the front bull bars (or would it be Grox Bars?) with a plate that says "I Win" the Rear ramps on the trialer on the rear also say something. look at it from the back it says "You" on the left and "Lose" on the right.

As it happens, I've spent the last year collecting battered old diecasts from ebay, giving them a lick of olive drab, and buying various bits as loads. And my camera's broke, so you'll have to imagine:

First up, buy one and see if it "looks" right size wise: I've samples of 28mm, 1/56, 1/60, 1/43, 1/48, 1/35 and 1/32, each looks "right" if kept with similar models in the same scale, but not so good if mixed.

So, I've found old 1950's Lone Star tractor units, with various Lone Star/ Corgi/ Matchbox (king size) trailers work ok for my Guard loggies and engineers' transport.
Loads, you can make up from GW spares, or cheaper go on ebay and look for "code 3", all sorts of resin/plastic/metal goodies there.

Lone Star/ Crescent/ Britains also do some suitable diecast armoured cars, and you could look at some of Corgi/ Dinky sci-fi stuff like the Captain Scarlet SPV or UFO's SHADO truck/tank. Mostly, these are cheap, cheap, cheap, say £3 for a tractor unit and maybe £ 5 for a semi trailer; they're diecast, so heavy, and even if a bit battered there are plenty of third party spares shops on the net, God forbid, it may even give you a new hobby.

Camera now fixed, here goes[img]

The internet's your friend here, although you'll likely kill a week just looking.

Photos once my camera's fixed, but my loggie "convoy" of about 20 rigs will happily stretch 8 feet and that makes for a nice target- rich environment, or a great objective?

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Its all fairly simple to work out.

Definative Formula for Civilian vehicle of the Imperium.

Commercial vehicle + skulls = Imperial commercial vehicle.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

I belive the Hydra Car from Captain America with a few adjustments (aquila hood orniment, and a few other things) would make a perfect Imperial Officers car (or any high society Imperial Individual for that matter).

Would be an interesting thing to build.
Part War Machine, Part Super Luxury, Part 18 Cylinder Aircraft Engine power Sports Car. It would certinly fit under the catagory of soemthing an Imperial Guard General would want to show up in.

Dead Men Walking described autonomous vehicles that were assumed to be commonplace in hivecities.
Half-tracks are common vehicles (other modern-ish vehicles probably exist) on Pyrites, at the very least only in major cities like Cracia (Gaunt's Ghosts)

One minor proofread "Finally there are Ork vehicles which most players assume are looted from Imperial trucks. Dave Taylor, one of finest modelers around, converted Ork Trukks into spectacular Imperial troop trucks (a rare care of reverse looting). I really like how he made sure these could count as Chimeras in a game." - you mean "a rare case" I think?

And Cargo Eight! It is mentioned so frequently in Dan Abnett novels, I really think we need a definitive "image" of one of these.

really like what you did - i thik everyone digging into the fluff is sooner or later frustrated by the lack of information about everyday civil life in the imperium
as for my personal thoughts:
as noted here before, construction vehicles are usually rather utilitarian and rugged and don't need much tuning from our century to the grim dark future
so it's easy to convert them from toys - just add some bits like power cables, atmospheric filters, armour plates, aquilas... ...and of course skulls and rivets )
there are lots of more or less toy-like die cast vehicles availiable in 1:50 scale from various manufacturers and some of them work even without any modifications
While Matchbox Siku and Majorette are more on the toy side, Norscot, Joal and Conrad produce highly detailed models for big boys
especially the bigger mining vehicles work very well with 8mm figures - sadly most of them are even more expensive than GW...
i got a bunch of them rather cheap via ebay (less than 10 € each)

they still need some reworking and weathering, but we already used them in some games as moving terrain pieces
the trucks are about the size of a Land Raider - wich is rather small fluff-wise but works well in "game dynamics scale" (compare weapon range)

Now I could definitely see two of those dump trucks being combined into a 'cargo Eight"- Take the dump bucket off the back of one for the tractor, and build a trailer out of the other set of wheels.

For the cargo 6 may I suggest this from Old Crow

The Provider Transport has a boxy shape, a cargo and passenger version and narrow slit windows. It's 25mm so it might be a bit small but I think it's the best out of the box option we have.

That's ok, except I don't like the moon tires on the top one, that tread design seems pointless for any terrain. If I scratchbuild or convert a CARGO EIGHT, will you put it in your article?

Cool, a cargo 6 could be a single chassis like that, but a cargo eight I think needs a separate trailer and tractor IMHO.

Sketching some ideas here....

Single Chassis? Or a fifth wheel type trailer?

These are flatbeds, the cargo area can be whatever you want, canvas, armored, box, etc.
