I actually hope it really is canceled and dead, cuz if it comes out it'll be no-life-cuz-of-wow for me all over again. Next thing I know it'll be 3 years and 100 pounds later...

Now, can anyone refute my refutation of the statement that people will play the tabletop game less if the MMO is available, based on people voluntarily giving up the tabletop game for DoW? (or don't, I really don't care. )

I can never play as much as i want to so no it wouldn't impact on my playtime of real 40k.

And as for painting and modelling. I only feel the urge to do either of those sporadically throughout the year so it wouldn't effect those spurts of enthusiasm.

So there. Refuted.

I agree with the latter sentiment, though I think I'd clarify it by saying any successful MMO will steal mindshare and free time from any tabletop game. Both activities are targeting the same demographics and there are only so many hours in a day. I don't think a 40K MMO would specifically hurt the 40K tabletop by virtue of shared subject matter any more than a black library book steals playtime from players.

THQ suffers from not having a "guaranteed hit" game. No Halo, Gears of War, Modern Warfare, Madden, etc. They put out solid games, but nothing that has people waiting outside a Gamespot for a midnight release. Big shame because I always felt Relic was able to nail the feel of the 40k universe.

For the sake of my marriage, I hope it is cancelled.

Collecting Forge World 30k????? If you prefix any Thread Subject line on 30k or Pre-heresy or Horus Heresy with [30K] we can convince LEGO and the Admin team to create a 30K mini board if we can show there is enough interest!

I've never heard of anyone spending less time playing 40K because of Dawn of War/Space Marine, and conversely, I've never met anyone who picked up the tabletop game because of the video games.

A good buddy of mine did pick up the tabletop game because of DoW, but I'll also admit that he's the exception rather than the rule.

Actually, I know many people who got into it through the game. Including me. I had been considering it for a while, then when DoW1 was released, I bought that, and that clinched the deal.

Nor does Ubisoft, THQ have a lot of games that suck but many solid companies under their belt. Halo is also a bad example as thats published by Microsoft who are know for publishing some pretty crap games.

Anyway THQ have said the following

THQ has not cancelled its 2014 line-up, and has not made any decisions regarding the planned MMO. As part of the ongoing review of our business, we have made decisions to ensure that the company is strategically addressing the most attractive markets. As we have previously announced, we have dramatically reduced our commitment to the kids' boxed games sector which leads to a significantly more focused release schedule moving forward. Our slate for calendar 2012 and beyond is focused on high-quality core games and continues to build our digital platform and business. We are excited for our pipeline of original and high-quality content along with our relationships with some of the best talent in the industry.

Additionally, we are thrilled with the great performance of Saints Row: The Third, which on a like for like period in North America has tripled in sell-through from Saints Row 2. In addition, WWE ’12’s worldwide sell-through sales are up almost 40% year-over-year for the same sales period with fewer platforms. According to NPD, for the month of December and the 2011 year, THQ was the #5 publisher overall, #4 third party, with reported sell through growing over 18% in a market that was down almost 6%. And coming up next, we have two great titles for the first half of the year including UFC Undisputed 3 and Darksiders 2.

Had nothing to do with the 40k IP
In reality it is one of the few releases people would wait in line for.
Space Marine saved THQs third quarter 2011.
This is mostly due to them misjudging the udraw.
Sold great for Wii but Wii is a totally different system.
Xbox and PS3 is all about gaming,no one wants to draw on an xbox they want Halo.
Thq put out a big discount to the udraw in november and then the stock tanked.
Truth will probally be they made more money off St.Row and WWE than they were expecting, enough to cover the udraw gaff, then stock will go back to $2

Nor does Ubisoft

Incorrect. Ubisoft has the Tom Clancy franchise to really "balance the books" for them. They release a ton of crap games, but the Tom Clancy games and their more "family oriented" games are generally profitable enough to cover the duds.
THQ have a lot of games that suck but many solid companies under their belt. Halo is also a bad example as thats published by Microsoft who are know for publishing some pretty crap games.

Halo is the perfect example actually. It's one of the first of the "killer apps", which is what silent25 is referring to in his post, which made really put console gaming on the map and pushed it towards being more mainstream.

[Update] THQ's chief spokesperson has issued a statement denying the rumor that it has canceled its 2014 projects.

"THQ has not cancelled its 2014 line-up, and has not made any decisions regarding the planned MMO.
