I'd have to say either Red Templars (because I'm a Black Templars fan too), or the Space Sharks cause their actual name is awesome beyond belief. Those two definitely win it for me.

Isn't that a coincidence... I do turn green once in a while, but only my hands, and then only when I'm painting my Orks. I guess that doesn't count.
Anyway. I've said what I needed to say, so unless there are any more dumbarse comments incoming from that guy, I'm done. Automatically Appended Next Post: And to contribute to this thread:
I don't know if they count as being obscure (being in the BA codex and all), but I really like the Flesh Tearers paint scheme. (If they're the dark red ones with black helmets and shoulder pads.)

Oooh...looks like I touched a nerve...
Grandpa, I don't care if the cr*p laid the foundation for the good stuff. The prevailing factor is that the cr*p is still cr*p. I don't have to think that cave paintings are masterpieces, just because they laid the groundwork for Rembrand's Night Watch (one of my absolute favourite artworks of all time). The fact remains that Night Watch is a higher quality work than Stick Man Throwing Stick at Stick Animal. But De gustibus non est disputandum, I guess.
Litle boy, using an extreme example/comparison like that only helps to undermine your point and make yourself look bad. I freely admit the classic bit of art posted above (many people have seen it because it was at the very from of the 40k Comdendium after all) is not the highest quality I've seen. But your knee-jerk dismissal of most older 40k art was needlessly broad and to be honest ill considered. I'll counter your statement that most early art was crap with one name: Paul Bonner. You may have seen his work. He did the lion's share of the Space Ork art in the three Ork RT Ork books as well as most of the Squat stuff and early Imperial Guard material. I have not seen anything by him in a GW book for years, but it's at least as good as or better than much of the recent material.
WTF? I hate defending myself to morons, so I won't. Except to say that nothing I've said so far has even remotely resembled that reasoning, I've given you my reasons for why I think most of the old artwork is sh*t. You're the one with the kneejerk reaction to what I said. That, and you don't know sh*t about me.
Charming language.
In any event, I know everything I need to know about you based upon your frothing at the mouth tone in your posts, your faulty comparisons, and your needlessly broad statements. It's pretty clear my initial assessment of you was spot on.
Oh, and there's no doubt whatsoever that you suffer from nostalgia bias. Just so you know.
Heh, I freely admit my biases. Too bad you can;t do the same.
Anyway, this thread is not about the quality of old art vs recent examples, so I'll bow out now. I'll allow you the last word. Try not to spew too much froth on the keyboard when you type it. I'm nice that way.
Love and kisses.

Dammit I missed all the arguing.
Squats are pretty silly, old players can use them in thier IG armies. I understand short humans and like the regular trooper models, but the other dwarfy fantasy cr*p with silly armor (and bikers) was almost as bad as the Mantic dwarves.
I think Orks are truly the worst cr*p and sh*t. Really fungus monsters? So stupid. Eldar are silly too, but evil dominatrix space elves jump the shark.
Speaking of sharks, I would vote for Space Sharks, despite the atrocious name. Space Shark Field Police for me.

Yes I'm a space marine, so? I don't see any problem. I embraced my imperial soul long ago and am very happy with my immortal carrion lord (Who's a cute b/w corpse), we have many friends inside and outside of the Imperium and am pretty armoured and tough-looking.

Lord Rogukiel ,
I apologize, but I'm confused by your comment. You don't really think my comments were cool. I know they weren't, I attempted to mock the outrage, as I just don't understand how rude we can be about toy army men to each other. The attacks I've seen here make the 15mm Napoleonic only long tooth grognards look civil to each other.
I love the original bad RT art. It's so much better than the puke in the original DnD books. It's amatuerish, but it has alot of character. Bashing it is silly as bashing the Model T Ford.
Of course the Model T doesn't match up against today's new cars, but it was cool at the time and it's still cool if you could find one and refurb it. Same as old minis. Who would say classic cars like Mustangs, Porsches, and Caddies are cr*p and sh*t?
Space orcs are still plainly stupid. Dumb fungus muscle gorillas that speak in a random UK accent. They don't mate? I'd rather die than be a space orc or be a necron.
Humans are where it's at. Wether they be diminutive squat, mutated Ogyrns, augmented marines, or regular joes.
Space Sharks would wipe the floor with Dark Hunters.

Carcharodons is a much better name than space sharks.
Lord Rog, I just googled the Dark Hunters. They are pretty cool. It's ashame they don't get more attention, the color scheme, open back story, and grim attitude make me want o paint a few up. The lesser known chapters always make me want to paint up a large Deathwatch company.
Lord Rog, what would you like to paint in a ten man DW squad?
For mix of history/colors I'd probably pick Sharks/Carcharodons, Lamentors, Crimnson Fists, White Consuls, Iron Hands, Flesh Eaters, Mentors, Firehawks, a random Field Police, and either a Death Hunters or Sons of Medusa.
Automatically Appended Next Post: Tazz Azrael,
Your Nid color scheme is pretty much the bees knees. Captures alot of the classic imagery, but has a fresh touch of sweet new.

Haha right. My fault for not picking up on the sarcasm. And i actually play DA, but they're too mainstream for this thread.
Though my main army is Eldar, for which I see you have a profound love of...
Yeah, I really like the Dark Hunters, mostly because there is so little background, they have a sweet emblem and colour scheme. Also to me they're really a representation of 40k grim dark. Not excessive because of their lack fame, and no excessive stress on "mysterious" past which does get kind of old.
As for a 10 man Dw company, I'll have to get back to you because that requires some serious thinking.
Excuse any typos, I'm on my phone

Black Dragons. Why? Everybody likes the Space Marine equivalent of Tyranids.
Plus, they come from the geneseed of the Salamanders. So they are automatically the coolest of all Space Marine Sucessor Chapters.
Also, the Sons of Antaeus. They are a bit like Legion of the Damned: They are incredibly resilient, and appear to help Imperial forces in need. They were also a Cursed Founding chapter.

Red Hunters for me, for two reasons;
1. They fought in the Siege of Vraks
2. They worship the Emperor as a God and have very close ties to the Inquisition - so close that their badge of a skull has the Inquisitorial surmounting the skulls brow. It is suspected that they were founded after the Horus Heresy to hunt down Traitor Legions and thus work alongside, and under, the Inquisition.

I like the mantis warriors - I always thought it'd be cool to do a BA counts as army.
They have the preying mantidae - who's perception is reduced to only being able to discern threats to themselves, so they fight harder, but are ultimately diminshed - the death company would be a really good counts as.
That and they are on penance for the badab uprising.
Really like the Scythes of the Emperor too.
Probably not so obscure though...
