What is your favorite obscure marine chapter? This can't be a chapter made up by a player. It has to be a chapter that has been mentioned in a codex or book or White Dwarf or something. GW has to have created this chapter. But it has to be cool... and it has to be relatively obscure. Also, let us know why you think it is cool.

Edit: oh yeah, where is this chapter mentioned? (book/codex name)

Does the Alpha Legion count as being obscure?

I'm actually partial to the Exorcists. I'm not sure if they're obscure or not, but I rarely hear about them so I'm assuming as such. Other than that, I can't remember any lesser known Chapters off the top of my head.

I'm into a lot of obscure marine chapters. You probably haven't heard of them.

Mortifactors. Just because you're a genetically engineered post-human doesn't mean you have to give up your animistic belief that eating your dead foes will make you stronger, or that a deep meditative trance will cause the Emperor to send you visions.

And all of that while still having the least-cool geneseed.

Ultramarines.

Mentors are pretty cool, and I'm very tempted to turn my Imperial Fists into Lamenters (although they're probably just becoming the Yellow Body Grey Shoulders.) I think I'll have to skim through my FW copies to check out the Minotaurs fluff though, they sound like they might be interesting if they're suitably grimdark.

Carcharodons! They are the space sharks and their is a lot of good info about them in the Badab war books. Their leader has chain fist lightning claws and they all go into a blood frenzy when they fight. They are a pure crusading chapter that operates outside the imperium and when they came to help out at the Badab war, their imperial codes were extremely old.

i think there has only been a single piece of art, and no fiction, but they have spawned a huge fanbase...
plus, they look awesome as Aztec Space Marines...

i'm more inspired to paint Space Sharks though...
the new Maori style markings, and classic pale skin with black eyes and red face paint, just plain awesome...
now i just have to learn to sculpt little shark tooth necklaces...

Relictors, cool auxtere/no-nonsense color scheme, and the use chaos against chaos thing was pretty cool. If I were to start a more obscure chapter, they'd easily be in the top 5.

Either Minotaurs, largely because of Asterion Moloch (by the Nine he looks cool), or Lamenters.

There are a few ones that really appeal to me. The Exorcists are a truly unique chapter since, if the rumors are true (and lets face it, its 40k, they are always true) they have all their recruits undergo demonic possession and then exorcism in order to better prepare them to fight chaos. The Death Specters, in addition to having an amazing name, enjoy hanging out in the Ghoul Stars, which are arguably more dangerous than the Eye of Terror (note that what is effectively that capital city for the Flayed Ones is located in the Ghoul stars and is one of the tamer planets noted).

I am torn between the Mentor Legion and the Celestial Lions. Both seem like cool, honourable Chapters; with the Mentors I dig their teacher mentality, and the Lions have a very nice gold-and-blue colour scheme plus a tragic backstory.

Every Dakkanaught gets a 4+ Pinch of Salt save.
When you suffer a Falling Sky hit, roll a D6 - on a 4+ the hit is ignored as per the Pinch of Salt save. On a 1-3 panic insues - you automatically fail common sense tests for the next 2 weeks and get +7 to your negativity stat. -Praxiss

I liked the Celestial Lions, myself.

Their color scheme leaves a bit to be desired, but as far as obscure chapters go, their lore is cool.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.
