Only thing I see wrong is the i7 - its entirely not necessary for gaming, the latest i5 would have sufficed.

I thought the same thing... but then it occurred to me that that's only considering how things are *right now*, and we've got a bunch of new games coming in the next year what with the new console releases. If he doesn't get the i7 now it could bottleneck the rest of the system later on, which I suspect is also why it's first on the list to be overclocked.

You're right, the i7 is unnecessary. So are the Titans, to be honest. The GTX780 is half the price for roughly the same amount of power, but obviously with half the RAM. Of course you don’t need 6GB of DDR5 and you certainly don’t need 12GB, but all of those caveats end with the word ”yet”. You don’t need an i7 yet. 12GB of VRAM is not needed... yet.

However I’m the type of person who doesn’t like to compromise. When I got my original 1GHz PC (a long long time ago) I got the best nVidia had to offer (a GForce card with 32MB of RAM – OMG!). It lasted so long and ran everything so perfectly that it was worth every bit of money I spent on it. When I moved onto the 3.[something] GHz computer I got the second best card nVidia had to offer (the 128mb one rather than the 256mb version). I saved $500 bucks, and consequently my PC ran out of power far earlier, stuttering along with new release games circa 2007/2008 on medium to low settings.

I don’t want that situation to repeat itself, so yes, Titans are over the top, but they won’t be forever. A day will come when needing two cards to get 12GB of RAM will seem quaint, as people run their single 64GB cards for the same price as one of my Titans is today. Of course, I’d rather the gaming industry catch up with my machine later rather than sooner.

And yes, the cost of the Titans is roughly half the cost of the whole system, but overall I’m paying around $800 for the entire rig (including the new speakers that I didn’t include in the specs) because most of it is coming from an inheritance that I got at the start of May. I’ve been trying to save up for a new PC for a while, and got damn close towards the middle of last year, but various household costs (and my car!!!) put that on hold until recently. I’m glad I waited.

Yea it really would be nice to be able to say place £200 a month into storage for a new rig, but given my current circumstances it may not be possible, temporary job and all.

If it becomes permanent then I easily would wait until I can get the best of the best to ensure that its money well spent.

Might mess around on the web and see what kind of build I could come up with just for fun, I tend to do that now and again

Its a nice computer regardless though, wish I had it lol

Does it make the planes act like, y'know, planes and not weird hovercraft?

The place I got it from just put up a new case option. A Corsair 900D. I can have fifteen fans before you add any non-case fans. That's insane!!!

http://www.moddb.com/mods/titanium-wars-mod-ss

Theres also a DC version for it, it makes SS playable (more maps & 2 new ish factions) they both more or less play the same and I cant stand dow without that particular mod anymore

I once downloaded a DC mod on the urging of a friend of mine. "It adds Steel Legion and the Shadowsword! It's awesome!" Sure thing. Why not? Next time I fight Guard they've got two Super-Heavies before I've even filled half my unit cap. And this was in a campaign mission.

The AI already cheats in RTS games (knows where you are, can build and control everything simultaneously with no delay, etc.), so why would I want to make it better?

Lots of new units for every faction (havent tested it with DE yet) *drools* plasma cannons and the ai isnt that bad from my testing, the standard ai seems really inteligent not just outpacing you for tech & production like the standard ai. Ive seen it set up forward bases use the new units, use the deep striking ability to great effect, its a LOT harder to predict the AI's actions.

Truth be told I've only played Soul Storm for a few hours because it would cause my PC to lock up, so maybe this Mod will make things better. I look forward to trying it out... but it can be number 30-something in the queue of games I have to play.

Man... I have a copy of the original S.T.A.L.K.E.R. that I've never played because my PC was so bad it stuttered in the opening cutscene... might have to add that to the pile.

But Hitman; Blood Money comes first. That's the priority.

...sorry, I had to. The words "a day will come" always springs that to mind...

I tried Stalker but I have to admit I found myself getting bored of it quick. We seem to have similar gaming tastes so if you stick with it and find it gets more interesting, let me know.

Everyone I know said STALKER was mostly ok, but the pre/sequels were fantastic.

I like to play Red Orchestra 2 a lot, it's probably my favourite FPS in terms of realism, I'm big for WW2 shooters, so naturally I'd recommend that.

Also I'd recommend Fable: the lost chapters, it's old but if you've never played Fable before it's a great game to get into, on a modern computer at high/max settings the graphics look good for an old game.

If you want a good free to play game there's always Planetside 2, also the free version of League of legends is pretty enjoyable.
