It has, however, reminded me to try some more experiments which were discussed.

Glad it's finding new people.

Good choice of build, Stormwall.
Good to hear, jhe90.
Thanks again, Supreme Ultramarine.

Thanks Icelord.

I've had a go at the plank making with a small hobby plane... and got nowhere. Could probably make something to hold the sprue piece, but you would have to shave away thin slices still. This would mean you only get one plank (and a lot of shavings) from each piece of sprue.

Maybe a larger, sharper (?) and sturdier plane would do it. But you would still need to find a good way to hold the sprue.

I'm going to try a way with a new saw and sawing block I have got. Just need to make some bits to hold the sprue in place. I'll report back soon...ish.

Extremely well done, and I love the idea for the plants from sprue.

This is beautiful! How would you go about adding chipped-looking paint to the planks?

Thanks Brennonjw, the plants are a great way to use up some sprue.

Thanks KaptinBadrukk. Everyone should try this.

Thanks evilsunzacademy, that was the aim.

Thanks.
The paint on the sign above the door was just lightly brushed on, making sure to not get in to all the cracks, and built up in successive passes until it was just legible but still looked well worn.

Thinking about it properly; old paint on wood would likely be persistent within the grooves of the wood and not on the peaks. I would probably add the "painted" layer early on in the wood painting stages (just after the basecoat. The top of Fig. 39).
Make sure that the "paint" gets into the grooves of the wood and then rub over the top of the paint (before it dries) with a finger or damp brush, to take off the "paint" on the peaks. Try not to spread it about the wood though.

Then, I would sponge on the chips with the wood basecoat. As you might for chipped paint on a tank.

At this stage, you may want to highlight some of the chips with the "paint" highlight colour along the lower edge of the chips. But this may not be necessary.

Then, finish off the wood painting with the layers of dry-brushing and washes, going over the painted areas as well.

This should all give you the flaking paint that has also worn off the peaks of the wood (as it would naturally).

Notes of sawing sprue for planks

The best / most efficient way I can see to produce the planks would be to hold many lengths of sprue, side by side, between two pieces of wood (for example) so that they are all straight and lined up.

Then saw down their lengths (from one end to the other) using a razor saw. The more you hold together, the more planks you cut at one time.
I state a razor saw not because I've used one, but because I don't have one and I can't cut straight enough with a jeweller's saw (I can't saw in a straight line to save my life it seems )

The alternative I have come up with, using my jeweller's saw, is to saw part-way into each side of the individual pieces (along the length) of sprue and then, using those cuts as a guide, finish off the cutting with my scalpel.

This second method has some advantages and disadvantages:
You have to cut each sprue individually Whereas the razor saw can cut many at once.
Each piece is much quicker, easier and less painful than doing the method shown in my original tutorial.
With the saw line as a guide, the resulting planks are more consistently straight, with less rough edges than with the scalpel alone method.
The more you saw, the easier it is to finish off with the scalpel. But the longer it takes (the sawing is the slow part). So it's a trade off for ease Vs time.

I'll be sawing my planks from now (and buying a razor saw ).

Thanks.

Thank you both, Snoopdeville3 and StarDrop.

I can now confirm that a razor saw is the way forward and was what I used to produce the originals for my wooden hut kit. Much easier than using a scalpel.
